Investigators havent said who was arrested. To another case, tonight police think it might be a case of murder. You can see the house where the fire happened remains cordoned off as a crime scene after a day filled with grief. Devastated loved ones converged on washington avenue in Egg Harbor City this morning, soon after learning a mother and her young son were dead inside this house after what police are calling a suspicious fire. Theyre suffering bad right now. Reporter sources tell nbc 10 the case is being handled as a Homicide Investigation and that the boy who died was just 7 years old. She was one of my best friends and her son was one of my daughters best friends. Shes very sad. The house was smoking and i seen them break in the windows. Reporter the fire broke out shortly after 8 00 a. M. Police say a third person from the house, the womans boyfriend, according to neighbors, was taken to the hospital. Sources say peared to have suffered stab wounds. His car was towed away from the scene late this afternoon. He was telling investigators that somebody broke into the house. Reporter however, police say neighbors should not be fearful of additional crimes. Soon into the investigation, sources told nbc 10 the blaze may have been deliberately set. To have this happen is very devastating. I just hope they catch the person that did this. And the judge scheduled the next hearing. As we expected, the family of the victim, carlesha freelandgaither, they were not here. It was a very brief court proceeding. But i did speak with carleshas grandmother within the hour and she tells many he that ultimately when all of this is over, she hopes to see the suspect put away for life. Wearing a dark green standard issued jump suit, 37yearold Delvin Barnes appeared before a judge for the first time to face federal kidnapping charns in the abduction of 22yearold carlesha freelandgaither on november 2nd. It was this Surveillance Video of the attack in germantown that sparked a threeday manhunt. How confident are you about the prosecutions case against mr. Barnes . Im just not going to comment at this time. Its an ongoing investigation. Reporter in addition to the video, federal prosecutors may rely on these images to build their case. Authorities say its barnes at an atm in maryland using the victims debit card. The feds arent the only ones who want him behind bars. Are you aware of the charges against him in virginia. Reporter after he was captured in maryland one week ago, barn was brought to virginia where a warrant was out for his arrest in a separate abduction case. Hes accused of sexually assaulting and attempting to murder a 16yearold girl. This week, officials in virginia allowed the feds to take custody of barnes in order for the prosecution of 9 federal crimes in carleshas case to be handled first. Federal, state and local officials took a hard look at the two cases and decided together where it made sense to proceed first. Of course number one on their list is where can we get this person more likely convicted. And a higher sentence of imprisonment. Reporter this is a former federal prosecutor at the courthouse in philadelphia. Defendant is prosecuted in the federal system tend to face a higher certainty of conviction and a higher likelihood of significant punishment. That means that the judge will decide then if the suspect in this case will be held without bail or if bail is gvted what the conditions of it are. John kramers wife told nbc 10 he made good on his promise when he allegedly dumped the red corvette into the river monday. The woman said kramer sent her and their teenage daughter threatening texts, just moments before he did it. Today kramer told our cameras why he ran away after allegedly ditching the car. I didnt realize i did anything wrong. I didnt know anybody was going to go in and get the car. I didnt want anybody to see me do it. Kramers estranged wife tells nbc 10 they are going through a divorce and that he was disgruntled at the protection from abuse order she had against him.
