It was 6 30 when a man knocked on the door. A woman inside walked up thinking it was a fellow coworker. The man waved a gun and the worker ran to the back of the store and thats when a single shot was fired. My initial reaction was, oh, no, not again. John mcdonald is with the Business Association and he spent the morning alerting other stores in the area and applauds the workers who at the time were getting the store ready for opening. The folks here are very theyve had incidents over the years, and i think theyre well schooled in how they handle it. Mcdonald says over the holidays there were crimes committed here but never with a gun. A store manager declined to comment and referred us to the corporate office. We spotted several surveillance cameras along the front of the building and now police are hoping to retrieve a clear image of the shooter. When folks are out of work struggling i guess pressure gets on to do some crazy things. Reporter the store did open once police left the scene earlier today and we are working right now to get that Surveillance Video and a full description of the man police are looking for. A Court Appearance this morning for the man accused of killing a Pennsylvania State trooper and injuring a second trooper outside of a State Police Barracks back in september. Eric frein was face charges of firstdegree murder and possibly the death sentence the Death Penalty. Doug shy melimell is live. This hearing was postponed twice already . Reporter exactly. There had been one of eric freins defense counsel that had left the team about a month ago and that was the last postponement until today but this has been a giant sense of relief for this entire community that the wheels of justice are now starting to turn albeit very slowly. Eric frein was actually brought into the pike county courthouse behind me just a little bit before 8 00 this morning under heavy state police guard. Hes been kept in the pike county correctional facility since being arrested on october 30th at the abandoned birchwood resort just outside the search pattern where most of the searchers had been looking for seven weeks. This morning he sat in court at the defense table. Opposite him was Corporal Bryon Dicksons widow. She glared at him the entire time. He never looked at her. They rolled what was probably the most i guess summarizing piece of video. It was the surveillance cameras from the Blooming Grove barracks the night of september 12th when shots rang out. You see Corporal Bryon Dickson who was ending his shift moving through the lobby. He is hit at about the same time trooper Alex Douglass is beginning his shift, he is also hit by another round. He drags himself into the lobby. A couple Armed State Police Troopers pull him back into the building. Eventually you see in the video they pull an suv around to block the front door and a threemember team gets out and pulls Bryon Dickson into the building. Of course, the coroner for pike county testified just a few minutes ago that they pronounced Bryon Dickson dead in the hallway just off the lobby. Theyre also talking to forensics folks about some of the rounds recovered off of the front of the state police building. They have more witnesses today. The prosecutor in pike county said they would like to get to them. Court Administration Says they have booked the courthouse the main courtroom, for today and tomorrow, but the Prosecutor Says he expects to get through all of the witnesses in the preliminary hearing today. Jury selection is under way for former sportscaster Don Tollefson. Hes accused of stealing from 200 people who bought various sports vacations. He said the money was for charity. He pleaded guilty in september but then withdrew the plea. We just learned the court is giving tollefson 30 minutes to decide whether to take another plea deal. The trial is also set to get under way this morning for a former leader of a Philadelphia Ironworkers Union who is accused of threatening and sabotaging nonunion work sites. 73yearold joseph dougherty, a former member of the iron workers local 40 is the only one who will go on trial. The other 11 members already pleaded guilty. Federal prosecutors say the group used violence and arson to intimidate builders into using their unions labor on construction projects. And today former philly mob boss joey merlino will head back to prison. He will report to a federal Detention Center in miami at 2 00 this afternoon. In october a judge ruled he violated the terms of his supervised release on a 2001 racketeering conviction when he met with known mobsters in florida. And today the real housewife is facing a new reality in a prison cell. Teresa giudice began serving her sentence for fraud at a Danbury Federal Correctional Institute in connecticut at around 3 00 this morning. The real housewives of new jersey star was sentenced to 15 months. Her husband, joe, also pleaded guilty to fraud and will head to prison after she is released. And police are looking for the person who carried out a Home Invasion in the kensington section of philadelphia. Police say a masked gunman forced his way into a house on kip street around 2 00 this morning. He stole cash and jewelry. Police say security cameras captured the entire thing and no one was hurt. And fire forced nearly a dozen people out of their north philadelphia home this morning. It broke out just after 11 00 at the home on north lee street. All nine people inside the homemade it out safely. Investigators are working to find out what caused the fire. And we could learn more about the death of West Chester University student shane montgomery. Family members tell us it appears to be an accident. An autopsy was finished yesterday. Tamerlan was killed during the manhunt over the next three days. About 1,200 people will be considered as potential jurors. Opening statements are expected to begin on january 26th and the trial could last three to four months. Tsarnaev faces the Death Penalty if he is convicted. And happening today, a judge could set the trial date for a south jersey native accused of a deadly shooting rampage at Los Angeles International airport. Paul ciancia is scheduled for a hearing in california. Hes from Pennsville Salem county. He pled not guilty to killing a tsa agent and injuring three people in a shooting at l. A. X. In november of 2013. On friday prosecutors announced they will seek the Death Penalty. That could mean delays and push the trial into next year. Prosecutors say ciancia intentionally targeted federal employees and terrorized passengers and airport workers. Jury selection will begin today in the trial for the murder of etan patz. Pedro hernandez is charged with murdering the new york city boy back in 1979. Patz was the first missing child to appear on a milk carton. Police say hernandez confessed to killing the boy after luring him to the store, but lawyers for hernandez say he is mentally ill and falsely confessed to the crime. Investigators say they found the body of a newborn baby who was kidnapped this weekend after a shooting at home in long beach. Police say 3 week old Eliza Delacruz was 230u7ndfound in a dumpster in the san diego area. Still unclear how she died. Investigators talked about how discovery of the babys body was made. A resident was in a dumpster looking for recyclables. Happened to find a bag that did contain the body of a deceased baby. That individual then reported that to a business who then called 911 for assistance. The baby was abducted on saturday after a man shot her parents and uncle at a home in long beach. They are expected to survive. Police say they do not believe the kidnapping was random though they havent identified the man responsible. He is still on the loose. Firefighters in North Carolina battling an overnight fire at the home of Carolina Panthers head coach ron rivera. Flames broke out just after 4 00 this morning at the south charlotte property. Rivera as well as his family and house guests were all able to get out safely. Im okay. Youre okay. The family is okay . Everybody is fine. Thank you, guys. Investigators are trying to figure out how this fire started. The Carolina Panthers advance to the divisional round of the nfc playoffs after a win over the Arizona Cardinals saturday afternoon. Sonar detected five large objects in the water over the weekend. Officials say the weather is better today and the waters are calmer so that should help the mission. The plane crashed more than a week ago with 162 people on board. Search teams have found 37 bodies so far. Most of the victims are believed to be still in the plane. It is 14 degrees colder than it was at this time yesterday, and its going down during the day today despite whatever sunshine we see. The windchills generally in the 20s to the low 30s, and well be seeing some negative numbers here before the week is out. It happened around 6 30 a. M. A man knocked on the door of the store. A woman walked up thinking it was a fellow coworker. Business owners say the area is usually safe with a lot of police presence. Frein shot him from a hidden position in the woods with a hunting rifle. Trooper Alex Douglass was badly injured. He recently returned home from a Rehab Facility to spend the holidays with his family and he is expected to testify if this case goes to trial. Federal prosecutors have indicated that they will seek the Death Penalty if there is a conviction, but that verdict is still a long time away. Theyll hear briefly from the judge in the case then fill out this basic questionnaire. From there the court and attorneys will eliminate those clearly ineligible to serve. We try to produce a jury that can fairly and impartially render a verdict and give a punishment that considers all options, including the Death Penalty and life without parole. A jersey shore neurologist accused of inappropriately touching patients was a noshow at his scheduled Court Appearance this morning. Only nbc 10 was there when Egg Harbor TownshipPolice Arrested him at his medical office last month. He is charged with criminal Sexual Conduct connected to allegations made by three female patients but several more women came forward after jafferys arrest claiming they too, are victims. He has denied the allegations. The case will be sent to the Atlantic CountyProsecutors Office for review and consideration by a grand jury. And just into nbc 10 former philadelphia sportscaster Don Tollefson has decided he does want to proceed with a jury trial after all. Tollefson showed up for jury selection this morning in doylestown. A judge gave him the chance to take another plea deal but he decided to proceed with the trial instead. Tollefson is accused of stealing 317,000 from 200 people who bought various sports vacation. He said the money was for charity. He had pleaded guilty in september but then withdrew that plea. And Philadelphia Police are trying to track down three men accused of holding a woman captive for hours and sexual assaulting her. Authorities tell us the men took the 20yearold victim to a row home on kennedy street in wissinoming where they assaulted her and released her sometime yesterday. The victim knew at least one of her attackers. And new details about the limo driver who was shot and killed this past weekend in west philadelphia. Family members tell nbc 10 Miguel Rodriguez ramirez started driving limos a few weeks ago to support his wife and infant daughter. Police tell us that three men were inside his limo when the driver was shot saturday night on the 5400 block of delancy street. Investigators say the gunman also stole money and his cell phone. He was just trying to make a living. He had been in the job like two weeks, trying to provide food for his wife and kid. The victims girlfriend was in the front passenger seat at the time of the crime. She wasnt hurt and is cooperating with investigators. In just over two weeks pennsylvania will have a new governor and were learning about the plans for tom wolfs inauguration. Like other recent governors, wolf will take his oath and deliver his speech in an outdoor ceremony at the capitol but he will be the first governor since tom ridge to hold his celebration at the Hershey Lodge and convention center. The party will include live music and Pennsylvania Food wine, and beer. Wolfs inaugural committee is raising money from private sources to foot the bill. Inauguration day is set for january 20th. Reporter head space is an app designed to help you meditate. If your goal is to learn a new language, theres an app for that too. You will get a vibration reminding you you need to achieve your goal and if you dont do it you will get zapped. Well a random act of kindness to tell but in florida after a veterans flag was stolen from his home. Take a look at this. Well see if we can pull up that video for you. Well retired captain billy creech served in the navy for 25 years. He says hes proud to fly the stars and stripes outside his home. But after his flag was stolen he was in disbelief. His daughter took her frustrations to facebook. When i got home i posted i cant believe somebody would steal my dads flag out of the front yard. Somebody who would steal a flag from a veteran who is retired, done his time 25plus years is just it upset me. I had to do something. Specialist stan got his unit to fly a flag for mr. Creech and sent a picture to his daughter and when he arrived back in the states he personally delivered that same flag to his home. The consumer electron inks show kicks off tomorrow in las vegas and one of this years biggest draws are selfdriving cars. Mercedes has been tested a selfdriving concept car, and bmw showed off the remote Valet Parking assistant. The car navigates on its own to find an open space in a parking garage. Dont have to drive around anymore. You dont have to look for a parking space. This car is doing it for you. Very nice. Laser scanners search for an open space using a digital map and if something or someone gets in the way, the car simply stops and figures out a way around. Some people actually enjoy driving and the challenge of parking sometimes as well. But its amazing what they come up with. We have an arctic blast that is coming in today. But thats only one part of the blast. In between part one and part two, weve got some snow thats coming in. Part two is going to be way colder than part one. So, yeah its cold today and its going to be cold tonight but way colder later in the week. Beautiful looking sky out there now, but its only 37 degrees despite the sunshine. 18mileanhour wind. The windchill right now 27 and that will seem balmy by later in the week. So you can see where 5 to 15 degrees colder than we were at this time yesterday, and that trend is just going to keep changing because we were in the 50s yesterday afternoon. Were going to be dropping close closer to 30 this afternoon. And you can see the windchills the smaller numbers, 20 in pottstown, 22 allentown, 26 in mt. Holly, 28 in atlantic city. Theres that west to northwest wind still gusting over 30 miles an hour. We had gusts close to 50 miles an hour last night even a couple reports of damage as a result of that and that was just with the first front that came through. Now, theres even colder air back to the west. How much colder . Way colder. Its 10 in detroit, 1 below zero in chicago. Not windchill, temperature. And this air is coming right at us. So this is clearly going to be the coldest weather so far this season thats going to be coming in this week. A couple of flurries on the radar, not really reaching the ground. This is the area thats coming tomorrow. A weak alberta clipper. They move real fast. Got a long way to go to get here by tomorrow morning, doesnt it . And the temperature as we go through the night tonight, down into the 20s. The wind of course making it feel like its in the teens. By 6 00 a. M. Yeah its in the 20s. Its cold enough for any snow to stick, but the question is is there going to be enough snow around to fall in order to stick . Certainly by 9 00 a. M. Were just starting to get into some of this. This is some of the latest computer guidance and its not that threatening compared to some of the stuff that was coming in over the last couple of days. Now, other models show a little bit more but were also showing the temperature not going up tomorrow, so whatever falls is going to stick on some untreated surfaces during the day. But if you got a treated surface, youre going to be in okay shape because its not going to be a real heavy snow. Now, as you can see, we showed you one of those computer models a little while ago. This is a different one. Again, just come in. By 9 00 a. M. No significant accumulation. By the end of this one to probably two inches. So the other model had up to one, this has up to two. We really dont have any mod ems going for big snows, nothing above 3 inches. The temperatures fall to 27 to 30 by later today and again the windchill is much lower than that. The sevenday forecast the light snow tomorrow could affect the end portion of the morning rush, especially in Chester County berks county, and then its gone by tomorrow afternoons rush. The bitter blast, the second blast, starts coming in wednesday and well feel it the most thursday morning. The low temperature, 9 in philadelphia.
