A train became stomachuck on the tracks when wires came down. Hundreds of passengers were trapped for more than an hour. The passengers well they arrived in center city and thats where doug shimell is standing by to tell us more. Doug . Reporter this is exactly why septa says they slowed down the speeds on the Regional Rail lines in this bitter cold weather because those overhead electric lines actually become brittle brittle. Apparently this train heading south to the city had just stopped at the train station at roslyn and had just left the station, not even up to full speed at about 40 or 45 miles an hour when passengers tell us they heard a big bang and the train sort of leisureurched and rolled to a stop. Septa knew at that point the what they called the little scissor jack on the top of the train that touches the electrical line had been pulled off the top of the train and in order to get the 500 passengers on to a backup train that they brought up there, they had to make certain those electric lines were deenergized, and that the train itself was properly grounded. Here is septa with more. Lost power to the train, you know the passengers safety was our priority because now they have no heat on the train. So we initiated several different prongs of attack to rescue the passengers once we were able to determine the vehicle was safe to let the passengers off. Reporter those passengers say they werent really concerned, more concerned perhaps with being maybe an hour and a half two hours late to work. They were able to put them on another train, came into suburban station, and here at jefferson station, septa says they got to determine what caused that damage was it a train ahead of this one that maybe damaged the lines, and then this train ran into that damage or was it in fact this train . All passengers septa says have gotten to their destinations. Live in center city doug shimell, nbc 10 news. Thank you, doug. You are certainly a role model for a lot of young women out there. Talk to us about how you decided to become a Police Officer. Well i always was geared into Law Enforcement since i was younger. And then a tragedy happened in my family when i was around 17. I had an uncle who was murdered in north camden while he was operating his corner store, a bodega, in 2003. And i really think that at that moment i knew i wanted to be part of a change in my city. So then i had the opportunity via Camden County that they were hiring and i got the opportunity to fulfill that dream and be a change. You definitely are making a change. We have done a lot of positive stories lately about the change that is coming out of camden. We appreciate you coming to talk to us today. And congratulations on your meeting with the president. Take care. Thank you. All right. Well, that is just a great picture. Americans, they love their labrador retrievers. I dont think that was a labrador retriever. That was officer matisses dog. It is the breeds second year in a row at the head of the ranking. Bulldogs hit a new high at number four. Were going to have a dry afternoon rush throughout the area. And we have got a frigid february beginning, middle and now the end of the month is go to be frigid too. Wind doesnt help either. It is increasing and making it feel even colder because temperature isnt going up. Plus we have cloudy skies. 18mileanhour winds. Were 5 degrees colder than we were at this time yesterday. It is in the low 20s up to the north and west. 17 in the poconos. And barely 30 in wilmington. That is the warm spot right now. It is cooler down to the south because the snow has been falling for several hours. The wind direction coming right out of the north. The center of the storm is well off shore. But we have winds up to 22 miles an hour. That is the sustained wind at Atlantic City. 18 in philadelphia as you can see here those winds are much stronger than they were a few hours ago. But, the snow is moving out, really fast. And look at that. Delaware, just about out of it. New jersey just about out of it. Reports of 4 1 2 inches in cape may, officially 4 1 2 in extreme southern delaware as well. About what we expected. And a little bit of light snow continues. Lehigh valley and the poconos, but that is definitely on the little side visibility is improving in many areas and an indication that the snow has weakened. And nothing going on in the middle part of the area. And visibility is really improved in Atlantic City. It is just about over. Certainly the accumulating snow is over with. And were not going to have any really this evening. But tomorrow, there is a weak disturbance coming through and we could see a few snow flurries or snow showers with the socalled heating of the day as we go into the 20s. But the upper portions of the atmosphere are extremely cold. And thats why we may see the showers. The snow ending as you can see, very cold temperature not going up a whole lot from where it is. Southern areas will get up closer to 30 degrees later on today. Then it is cold bitter cold tomorrow for this time of the year. And the snow showers and another bitter cold day saturday especially in the morning, and then the pattern changes a bit, not as bitter cold but we have some snow and rain sunday night. Then another system coming in tuesday and wednesday. Well be right back.
