Days and weeks and months there have been no exchange of gunfire between the police and the protesters. The police will tell you, though, they have been very concerned about this for a long long time because often there has been stray gunfire in the air, but not directed at them. This is really an ambush is what it is. You cant see it coming you dont understand it is going to happen, youre basically defenseless from the fact it is happening to you at the time. And that is something that is very difficult to guard against when you have a group of officers standing in a large group and then you have gunfire, certainly gunfire directed at them. Reporter now the Police Officers are looking for a gunman gun, shell casing, any clues as to who carried this out. The protests were winding down. It happened after midnight. There was a group out here after the resignation of the chief of police tom jackson. It came at a very unusual time and it could be a game changer because of the severity of what happened. The two officers are both in the hospital, their wounds are very severe. One in one case the bullet went through the shoulder and exited the back. The other has a bullet lodged in the cheek. Very serious wounds both are expected to survive. More information coming from the police as they have it. Ron allen, nbc news ferguson. A rolling danger today philadelphia leaders are discussing trains that carry crude oil. A lot of it moves through the city and some people fear they are a disaster weighting to happen. Fears that grew last year after a train derailed over the Schuylkill River. Nbc 10s Monique Braxton is live at still hwa with more on what city council is doing today. Reporter hi chris. A couple of minutes, Council Members will talk about a resolution that addresses trains carrying crude oil to the city of philadelphia. And theyre about to meet now on the fourth floor here at city hall. Council person johnson says most of the tankers you see here are older models and hes urging congress and the u. S. Department of transportation to issue specifications for tank car design. Johnson also says the widely used model of tanker is prone to puncturing. Hes asking Philadelphia Office of Emergency Management, to share information with those living close to the tracks. Environmental groups in our area argue that more than 700,000 philadelphians live in an oil disaster evacuation zone. As you know as chris also just mentioned, there have been derailments here within the past 15 months. The most recent one late january of this year in south philly. In january of 2014 tanker cars were left teetering over the Schuylkill River. Now, of course there were no leaks in either case. But the question is just how safe are people should a derailment occur and leaking occur . Crews battled a fire at a restaurant in north philadelphia overnight. It started just after midnight inside china taste at brooad and erie streets. Firefighters put out that fire. It also damaged apartments above the restaurant but no one was hurt. One person did have minor injuries in a fire at a cafe in west philadelphia. That broke out around 2 00 this morning inside cafe renata. Apartments above the cafe were damaged no word on what caused that fire either. Now, your nbc 10 first alert weather. Well pennsylvanias attorney general Kathleen Kane is weighting to find out if the criminal case against her will go forward. Her legal team argued before the Supreme Court in center city yesterday. The justices will decide whether a lower court judge had the authority to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate whether kane leaked secret grand jury material to a newspaper. Documents show that grand jury recommended charging kane with perjury and other offenses. No word on when the Supreme Court will issue a ruling. Happening now, for the fourth time a bankruptcy judge is considering a deal to sell the closed revel casino in Atlantic City to a developer. The judge may clear the way for the sale of that property to glen straw for 82 million or may decide to give revel time to consider other bids. There is also the chance that the judge could just scrap the whole process altogether and appoint a trustee to liquidate revel, which costs 2. 4 billion to build. For the second time there is a hung jury in the trial of a philadelphia priest. Andrew mccormick is accused of assaulting an 11yearold altar boy in 1997 at a church in bridesburg. Mccormick denied the allegations. His first trial last year also ended in a hung jury. Proceedings for his third trial will begin in april. The archdiocese suspended him after different abuse allegations were made. New this morning, septa says it is making xe subways safer by cracking down on turnstile jumpers. According to our partners at news works, Septa Transit Police arrested ten times more fare evaders last year than two years ago. Officials say that is helping to cut down on fees. They noticed many of the fees got on to the trains in first place by not paying. So police started clamping down on people who jumped turnstiles. More maneuvering by the eagles today. The birds may be in the process of adding a big star to their roster. Espn reports Demarco Murray flew to philadelphia this morning with the intention of signing a contract. Murray led the nfl in rushing in 2014 for the dallas cowboys. That espn report says murray reached out to eagles coach chip kelly yesterday morning, expressing his desire to play in kellys offense with his former oklahoma roommate and quarterback sam bradford. Bradford was acquired tuesday night by trading nick foles. Bradford says hes trying to convince murray to come here. The helicopter went down during a Training Mission over the gulf of mexico tuesday night. Wreckage and human remains washed up on shore yesterday. The seven marines and four National Guard members who were aboard that chopper are presumed dead. This morning, the secret service is investigating another allegation of misconduct. As nbcs tracie potts reports from washington this time theyre looking into whether two agents crashed into a barrier at the white house after a night of drinking. Reporter we have confirmed early this morning the two senior agents being investigated are George Ogilvie and mark connolly, second in charge of the president s security detail. The Washington Post first reported last week they used flashing lights and a government car to get on the white house grounds where officers were checking a suspicious package. Then hit a barrier after drinking at a retirement party. The paper says officers wanted to conduct a sobriety test and arrest them but a supervisor ordered they be sent home. It is egregious that the supervisor would let them go. We may never know if they were sober or not because the supervisor let them go. Reporter it is the kind of problem new director joe clancy was brought in to fix. In a joint statement, the Top Republican and democrat on the House Committee that oversees the secret Service Calls it embarrassing and potentially dangerous. They questioned whether the secret service has done enough to fix its problem. The secret service isnt saying much about this. In a statement they said theyre aware, they called for the investigation and wont be making any more statements before it is over. Tracie potts, nbc news washington. Breaking news now out of indiana. This is a live look at the scene of a tour bus crash on interstate 65. This is in clark county indiana, Southern Indiana there. This is a wide view of the crash scene. Hard to make out exactly where the tour bus is among the mess there. We dont have control of the camera on this helicopt so youll forgive us if the camera moves from time to time. As we zoom in here you can see more about the scene. This is interstate 65. It heads up through indianapolis on the way to chicago. We have seen a medical helicopter arrive there on scene. You can see that parked in the lane of traffic. Looks like it is lifting off now. No word yet though on the number of injuries where that bus was headed. We know this happened near the 22 mile marker on i65. If youre at all familiar with that interstate there, through indiana. And dispatchers have said that this was not a school bus. Well, a new study Shows Americans faith in government is at or near an all time low. That survey has been gauging attitudes on government institutions for the last 40 years. Its latest findings show only 23 of americans have a great deal of confidence in the Supreme Court. Only 11 have a great deal of confidence in the executive branch. 5 in congress. Confidence is high, though when it comes to the u. S. Military with 50 saying they do have great faith in the armed forces. Police in Washington State have arrested a 15yearold for that attempted kidnapping that was caught on video. Youve seen this video by now. Police say the teenager snatched the 22monthold boy out of a stroller at a park on sunday. The toddlers brother and sister chased the suspect, all while yelling for help. Several teenagers joined that chase. Police say the commotion caused the kidnapper to drop the boy and run off. The toddlers dad says those teens are heroes. Very proud of not only the teenagers that helped us but im also proud of the Law Enforcement and everybody pulling together to resolve this situation. Now, the suspect is not being identified because hes a minor. Police are not saying what they believe was his motive. Bostons Public Transit system is trying to make it up to riders. The system will offer free fares for a day. No date has been set, but it will likely be in april. Riders will also be offered a 15 discount on a monthly pass in may. And helicopters are in the process of transporting those people to hospitals in the area. No word yet on the extent of thisser injury ertheir injuries or what kaudz caused the crash. Toymaker mattel plans to come out with a new interactive barbie coming out this fall. But one Consumer Group says the high tech talking doll may not be a good idea. The new hello barbie will let kids talk to her and barbie will respond. Officials at the campaign for commercial free childhood have a petition. They say it will give mattel the ability to listen in on kids that play. The doll apparently uses a microphone to record kids voices and transmit them to cloud servers. A tour bus crash on interstate 65. This is in clark county, indiana, across the ohio river from louisville kentucky. 20 passengers were injured. You see them some of the debris from the bus crash on the side of the highway. There is the vehicle itself right there. This is a tour bus, 20 people were injured. We saw helicopters earlier taking victims to area hospitals as we dont know yet how severe there is a better shot of the bus on the ground there. You can see it is overturned with the passenger compartments exposed there, a lot of debris on the site of the interstate. This is interstate 65 southbound traveling toward louisville. New developments were following after two Police Officers were shot, just hours after the towns police chief announced hes resigning. And late just when you thought you had seen it all, there is this. New video that gives new meaning to taking the dog for a walk. Nbc 10 breaking news. Back to the scene of this breaking news in Southern Indiana. This is interstate 65 where a couple of hours ago a tour bus crashed as it was headed southbound on interstate 65 toward louisville kentucky. This, again, clark county indiana, just across the ohio river from louisville. You can see against the tree line on the right side of the screen th large wide object is the bus on its side. You see on the Bigger Picture that the tour bus, smaller picture is live video of what is going on right now. You see the Emergency Responders there on scene. We know at this point 20 people were injured. 20 passengers on that bus. We dont know the extent of their injuries. If we get any updates, well bring those to you as soon as they come in. Were also learning new details this morning about the shooting of two Police Officers in ferguson missouri overnight. Amateur video there captured moment three shots were fired. Protests were taking place in ferguson after the resignation of the citys police chief. The officers who were shot are thought to be in serious but stable condition. One was hit in the shoulder. The other was hit in theno< face. Both are expected to survive. But police in ferguson are certainly on edge once again. This is really an ambush is what it is. I mean you cant see it coming. You dont understand it is going to happen. Youre basically defenseless. Now, a journalist on social media is reporting that there is s. W. A. T. Activity in ferguson now related to this police t meantime, the area in front of the Ferguson Police headquarters has been sealed off while the search for clues continues. No arrest at this time. Whoever fired the shots is still on the loose. An nbc news producer was covering that when the shots were fired and two officers were hit. Jennifer roller said protesters had started to calm down when multiple gunshots rang out. We heard three on the audio recording earlier. She spoke to Savannah Guthrie on today about what happened. Loud noises pop, pop, pop. It sounded likeni firecrackers thats what we thought at first. When everybody hit the floor and the police said get down get down, and guns were drawn, we all hit the floor, it was a frightening moment. She said that once those shots were fired, a lot of the protesters ran. Police are now questioning some of the protesters that were still hanging around after the shooting. The racist chant caught on videotape there is part of a, quote, horrible cancer but they say it does not extend past that chapter. Nbcs Gabe Gutierrez reports. Reporter all week it called this video appalling. This morning, Sigma Alpha Epsilon says the problem seems to be limited to one chapter. Sigma alpha epsilon has come under attack. A lot of chapters and members are vilified. Thats unfair. We hear the critics. We hear the conversations taking place. We know we can make this better and prevent this from happening. Reporter calling it a horrible cancer the fraternity says racist behavior entered its university of Oklahoma Chapter three to four years ago. Thats about the time ou junior keith logan started college. He was among the dozens of people who attended a previously scheduled town hall meeting wednesday night to discuss racism on campus. It is very sickening at the same time. It is not surprising. Reporter parker rice one of the members in the video who apologized, is keeping quiet after saying his family has been threatened. Outside his empty dallas home, a small group of protesters gathered. Were planning on filing a complaint with the department of justice so that way they can look into every chapter across the nation of asae. Reporter but the fraternity says so far it has been unable to verify any rumors of members using the chant beyond ou. E. J. Beasley is a proud africanamerican member of sae at the university of cincinnati. I would not be part of a fraternity that is racist. Reporter the University Says more expulsions are possible. Now some experts are questioning whether thats even legal. Students at public universities have free speech rights. Now, if they had threatened a specific person that would be different. But nearly uttering even offensive racist speech is protected by first amendment. That was Gabe Gutierrez reporting. Overnight, the ou president announced the creation of a Vice President of diversity position at the university. Well lets look at this a police chase ended with a car crashing into a fire truck. Los Angeles Police were chasing two suspects when their car slammed into the back of that fire truck. The truck was sent careening into a yard. The car caught fire and the Fire Fighters got out of their truck and started battling the flames. One person was killed another injured. At least two firefighters had minor injuries. A 2yearold was rescued after falling down a hole in a backyard. It happened near colorado springs. The child somehow fell about 15 feet into a sump pump hole and almost drowned. Neighbors called for help and when firefighters got there, they lowered ropes and harnesses into the hole. Tied the rope off to my ankles, drop manyped me down head first into the hole. The boy is safe now and several houses in the neighborhood have the same types of holes in the ground. Small children could be in danger to certainly keep them away from the sump pump holes. Little League Baseball has announced plans to dissolve the district that was home to the Jackie Robinson west team. Nine days from now. Yes. How are you going to celebrate . A big party. I hope i get an invitation. Anytime. Anytime. You hear that . Frita, you took up painting at the tender age of 76. Right. Why . 77. 77. Why did you start painting then . Most people are putting down their i retired from work. And i had had a little painting that i had done when i was when my daughter was 5 years old. And this one paint inging, another lady saw, and she was an artist and she said you have talent. She said you should start painting. You do have talent. Were seeing some of your work on screen here. And youre not only a talented artist. Youre walking a history lesson. You were born in germany in 1915 during world war i. Your family fled eastern germany, went to germany, things got rough there. You fled nazi germany in 1939 holocaust survivor. You came to the u. S. With 4 in your pocket right . You knew no one. Very little english. Didnt speak english. How did you survive . How did you start over . I was homeless for nine days. Slept on the floor. And then i found a job, a nursing job. I was a nurse in germany. A nurse in germany. You found a nursing job here. Yes. And from then on i worked almost for three years until i decided to become a registered nurse here in america and went to Bellevue Hospital and trained there. And cared for many patients over the years. And you earned a certificate, after you decided to take up painting and at the age of 77, you earned a certificate from the Pennsylvania Academy of the fine arts at age 83. What will you say is your style of painting . We have seen some of your works. Impressionistic, yes. A lot of landscapes. Yes. And portrait paintings. I also took classes in a system which was introduced by leonardo da vinci. And you get a very good likeness classic painting of selfportrait, of portraits. You left us with beautiful work. Leave us with some wisdom here too. Youre about to turn 100. You dont wear glasses. You drive every day. You said you sell me you drive on the schuylkill at night. I said to her when i sat down, i said you actually drive. She said of course i do. How else am i going to get to where i need to go. You seem so young. What is your secret . I just i dont know. I just try to never get angry. I have an easy disposition. You and i will get along well then. Everybody gets along with me. I have an easy disposition, right. I dont i dont dont let things fluster you, thats for sure. Right. You stay active. Thats the key. There is an opening reception sunday afternoon from 3 00 to 5 00. Frita will be speaking there. And then im going to her big birthday bash on march 21st. Well now that were out of the deep freeze, a lot of the snow continues to melt but we have got a windy day today and cooler winds. We got up to 61 yesterday. Not even close to that. We got a lucky 13 for tomorrow. Beautiful weather then. And weekend rain not quite so beautiful. Citizens bank park actually going to be used before too long. Were getting into springtime. Close to the beginning of baseball season. 47 degrees, the wind 21 miles an hour gusting to 30. And the temperatures are in the 40s, 40 degrees in allentown now. 45 in glassboro. 47 in millville. 49 in stone harbor. Of course, a lot of those places are going to get into the 50s today. And thats the average temperature. You can see the wind coming from the northwest, these are the average winds, the sustained winds, 21 miles an hour in philadelphia. 26 in the poconos. 23 in millville. So yeah it is a windy first half of the day. The second half will be less windy. But it is still going to be bone dry. Beautiful blue skies out there. A lot of rain continues to build up from the gulf of mexico. And some of that headed this way. Not during the daytime hours tomorrow. Tomorrow night, especially late tomorrow night, the rain comes in becomes heavy at times, right now not heavy enough to produce significant flooding. And there is 1 00 saturday afternoon, and a lot of the models dry it out a little bit saturday afternoon. At least taper it off into showers as you can see here. But definitely wetter than sunday. So quite a difference between those two days. Today, we see bright sunshine windy, though gust of 30. Wind diminishing this afternoon. Not much wind. Tonight, and not much wind tomorrow either. The rain comes in at night, especially later at night. And into saturday and the morning should be the wettest part of the day. Sunday windy day, just a chance of a shower dry on monday. The nbc 10 investigators ask federal officials what is being done about them. Today, the frustration and the finger pointing. This afternoon on nbc 10 news at 4 00. And we continue to follow breaking news out of indiana. A tour bus crashed on interstate 65 there, clark county indiana. Just about 20 miles north of louisville kentucky, across the owe ohio river. The bus is on its side off the interstate. A number of people were injured in the cash. We were hearing about 20 people injured earlier. At least six medical helicopters responded to the scene. Stay with the nbc 10 news app for updates on this breaking story out of indiana. To another update the Police Officers shot overnight in ferguson missouri have been released from the hospital. Officials confirm that those officers were sent home sometime before 9 00 a. M. Central time. The officers were wounded when gunfire erupted during a protest. That demonstration was taking place following the resignation of fergusons police chief. One officer was hit in the shoulder, the other was hit in the face but, again, they both have been released from the hospital now. The person who shot them is still on the loose. Police have not made any arrests at this time. There is unrest in ferguson since officer Darren Wilson shot to death unarmed teen Michael Brown in august of 2014. A grand jury later decided not to indict willisson in browns death. Taking the dog for a walk. It is no ordinary sight in china. Look at this. A 1yearold poodle trained to walk on its hind legs and someone has thought to put this dog in some fine clothing there. People actually mistake the dog for a child often.
