He suffered from diabetes and had been in declining health. He was 89. Now to the deadly derailment in philadelphia. Were learning more about the investigation into what led up to the tragedy. Heres whats new from overnight. The last two rail cars removed from the crash site in Port Richmond are now on their way to the amtrak yard in bear delaware. Thats where the other five rail cars from the derailment are being analyzed right now. Nbc 10s matt delucia has covered this from the beginning. Hes live from Port Richmond. Matt, what can you tell us . We see more of an effort to get these tracks restored especially all those damaged rales that were caused as a result of all of this. Just behind me you can see theres still some activity. We have the Fire Department another truck. We saw an ambulance go back there a short time ago. Theres a lot of work going on back there. You see all the spotlights out there in the distance. The ntsb says that there were no mechanical issues with the track signals or the tracks themselves. The focus is on the trainee vent recorder, the black box, if you will. Investigators spent yesterday looking at the breaking system and front facing camera that was installed on that train. Investigators say there is good quality video leading up to the point of derailment when the train tilts to the right. Also interviews of some of the passengers have already gun. As for the engineer he has agreed to be interviewed in the next couple of days as well. Our big priority is to analyze data recorder. We want to schedule interviews with people on the train. We will eventually do a brake check. Reporter the engineer did submit a blood sample for toxicology. The time line has been released back to amtrak. A lot of work going on to get service restored. Commuters from washington and new york are feeling the impact of the amtrak being shut down. This is mayhem in new york city. The crowds at penn station, it shows the Ripple Effect this derailment is having up and down the northeast corridor. Philadelphia dealing with delays and cancellations. Crews were hauling in new sections of track working to restore service. The head of amtrak said service could be restored between philadelphia and new york as early as monday. Trains are still running on a modified schedule from philadelphia south of d. C. And amtrak is addressing the tragedy. Yesterday Joseph Boardman released a statement saying the railroad takes full responsibility with the derailment and they are cooperating fully with the investigation. Pennsylvania senator bob casey plans to visit those recovering at Temple University hospital a little bit later this morning. Youre looking at casey touring the crash site on wednesday just under a half dozen derailment victims remain at temple. Six are in Critical Condition with more surgeries planned. All are expected to recover. Family and friends will say goodbye to one of the victims of the derailment. Funeral services will be held in new york for 20yearold justin zenser. Dr. Derek griffith was a dean of Student Affairs at medgar everest college. He got his doctorate a month before he was killed in the crash. He was one of eight people who died in the derailment. Next the nbc 10 investigators have new information about why those fail saves werent in place. Theres over two hundred thousand students in philadelphia. Jim kenney and Tony Williams are fighting over Public Schools versus charters. I think theyre both wrong. Its making sure they all get a good education. Teachers should have their contracts respected. They also should be held accountable. And its wrong philadelphia gets less School Funding than other parts of pennsylvania. Ill work with harrisburg to change that. But if they refuse ill take them to federal court. As mayor ill do whats right for them. Now the latest on the deadly derailment. Crews are moving the last two rail cars from the crash in Port Richmond to an amtrak yard in delaware for analysis. Its unclear why the train sped up to more than 100 Miles Per Hour in the final minute before it derailed at a curve. Eight people died in the crash. Youve been hearing a lot about positive train control or ptc. Its the newest Railway Safety system designed to stop a speeding train. The technology wasnt being used on the section of track but nbc 10 has learned that it was in the process of getting approval. The nbc 10 investigators are working to get more clarification on that progress, however, theres another system called automatic train control or atc. Thats been around for decades and already installed on tracks in the country. It signals the engineer if the train is going too fast and eventually brings the train to a stop. The nbc 10 investigators found it isnt on the tracks where the train derailed but it is on the southbound track along the same stretch. Amtrak says the reason it was not installed on the northbound track is it didnt think trains would build up enough speed between 30th street station and the frankford curve. The ntsb tells nbc 10 that it intends to find out if there are other gaps along the amtrak rail line. Now in the wake of the derailment septa is taking steps to make sure its riders are safe. The agency says its highest priority is to get the newer system, ptc, installed on the rail network. Right now its spending 300 million to get the job done. The requirement is to install the system on all rales passed 2008. The deadline is this dnyear. It covers hundreds of miles across new jersey and delaware. The ntsb says the lack of a similar safety feature contributed to this accident in 2006 in abington montgomery county. Back then atc hojxn not been ichb stalled. It works with ptc and further enhances safety. Atc is now part of septas entire Regional Rail system. We reached out to new Jersey Transit to find out its status on either safety system. So far our phone calls and emails have not been answered. The National Spotlight will shine on camden next week thanks to a visit from president obama. On monday the president plans to talk to kids in the neighborhood and with the Camden County Police Department about the Community Coming together. Jackson township officer Eric Prosniewski is accused of interfering with the case. He gave detectives bad info in the murder of a man at a restaurant in april. Two men are under arrest.
