New Jersey Governor Chris Christie met with President Trump in washington today amid renewed talk that he could be slated for a spot in the new administration. Today nbc 10 learned that a dozen officers at Vaughn Correctional Center have resigned reportedly in fear of their lives. The head of the Officers Union said officers cant wait for the preliminary report in june. He says 17 officers have quit or filed for retirement since the standoff. And recruiting new officers is a tough sell. A mother out there is going to tell their 25 or 26yearold kid to come do this job right now with the conditions and the salary. New Corrections Officers make 32,000 a year to do a job even the governor says is very dangerous. Now the union says theyve seen safety reviews after other incidents over the years, but they say none of the suggested changes has ever been implemented. A jury convicted Pedro Hernandez in the nearly 40yearold cold case. Hernandez worked at a Convenience Store in etan patzs neighborhood in new york at the time of his disappearance. Patz disappeared on his way to school back in 1979. His body was never found. Hernandez once confessed to the crime but his lawyers argued the admission was only the ramblings of a mentally ill man. Etan patzs father reacted to the verdict today. I needed to know what happened to my son. And this great Prosecution Team finally proved it. Another jury deadlocked in 2015 leading to this retrial. Pedro hernandez now faces life in prison. Patz disappearance helped shape parenting and Law Enforcement practices for years to come. Tonight a push to create a new type of amber alert system for hit and run investigations officially kicked off. Jalerts are now named in honor of jaona powell. She was hit and killed by a hit and run driver while walking home in school last november. Betty and lawrence and bryce were accused of stealing money from the fire company. Betty will spend 60 weekends at the county prisonp her boyfriend and daughter will serve 15 weekends. In Camden County there are plans to transform a waterfront pier from a parking lot into a park. Its part of an effort to convert a nineacre site where riverfront state prison once stood. The park will take up two acres and be built on the rca pier just south of the ben franklin bridge. Now to breaking news in california concerning that dam on the brink of failing. Some 200,000 people who were evacuated have just learned they are allowed to return home. Reporter its good news. But theyre back home for how long and, you know, how safe will it be over the weekend when the rain comes through . Thats the big question. Theyre still working furiously around the clock to drop gigantic boulders in the spillway here at Lake Oroville and the spillway of the dam that started to give way on sunday. The danger there downstream was imminent when all that water was eroding and digging the hole deeper underneath that spillway. Now they say theyve dropped the lake level 14 feet at least below the spillway and thats good news. The more it drains, the faster it goes because its shaped like a v. So the water starts to drop more quickly as time goes on. But then again the forecast for rain this weekend is very concerning. The rain should start tomorrow, last through tuesday. All the runoff comes here and there are also engineers looking at other dams nearby including lake shasta with a similar structure. That one is also dangerously close to capacity. President trump is asking about autism in our nations schools. The president says he will look into, quote, a tremendous amount of increase in autism rates. Today President Trump and his new education secretary betsy devos held a listening session with parents and teachers from public, private and charter schools. Mr. Trump stated that his aim is to create great and safe schools. We lost a lot of our best jobs to other countries. And were going to bring them back. He also congratulated secretary devos for winning what he called an unfair trial during her confirmation hearing. The democrats were highly critical of devos record as a promoter of charter and private schools. For many women, hair loss is one of the most recognizable side effects of chemotherapy. Im jacqueline london. So far more than a dozen employees have left their jobs at the Vaughn Correctional Center in smyrna. Tim furlong joins us with more on that list targeting those officers. Reporter the head of the corrections Officers Union tells me that theres sort of this floating list of officers that inmates in smyrna might want to target. Thats the kind of conditions the officers are working under. Some officers are simply getting out. Just about two weeks after inmates at the vaughn correctional facility overtook guards and killed one of them in a 20hour standoff, at least 17 officers have quit or put in for retirement. At a starting salary of 32,000 a year, it will be harder to track their replacements. For the pay and the risk and the fact that lieutenant steven
