If your house caught on fire, is your Smoke Detector working . Do you have a Carbon Monoxide detector inside your home . Does your family have an escape plan in case of a fire . These are important questions. This weekend, a special event will help make sure you can answer those important questions. Gigi lubin is from the Company First alert, holding the safety first event in northeast philadelphia. She is here with lieutenant ron phillip from the Union Fire Company in salem. Thank you both for being here. Gigi, tell what you say people will learn this saturday. The campaign brings fire and Carbon Monoxide safety to communities around the country. There will be fire trucks. Theyll have a brandnew ladder truck from the Union Fire Company. Theres even a campaign were kids can build wooden fire trucks. Kids will learn and families will learn about the importance of smoke alarms. They dont last forever. They need to be replaced every ten years. Theres also a new line of smoke and Carbon Monoxide alarms where the batteries last for ten years. I saw that in the email i received. And you dont have to replace them, right . Correct. Theyre sealed within the unit. Even if you could get to them, you couldnt use it in another product, which is very great. And it gives you an end of life warning for the alarm that signals when its time to take it down and put up a new one. It really is simple. Because one of the tragedies, in fires, you go in, firefighters do the investigation, they found out there was a fire alarm but the batteries were dead or there were never batteries in the fire alarm. Whats the biggest mistake people make when this comes to safety . They dont test their batteries. You should test them once a month. Ive any been on a call where there was a fatality in a home with a working Smoke Detector. Thats amazing. Gigi, i also want to ask you about Carbon Monoxide detectors. That worries people because you cant smell it, you cant detect it, the nose cant detect it. Correct. 450 people die each year from accidental Carbon Monoxide poisoning. You cant taste it, you cant smell it. A Carbon Monoxide alarm gives you Early Warning to tell you, hey, this isnt the flu, its Carbon Monoxide and you need to get up and get out. And that alarm that i showed you, the cool thing about this is it has a digital readout that tells you the highest level of Carbon Monoxide that was read, which is great information for first responders. You know, you can find all this information too at the forasaferplace. Com website. Its an at lowes of northeast philadelphia this weekend. Theyre all gone now, so me and my wife have to practice that. Thank you for coming today. Make sure you check those smoke alarms. Good counsel.
