President Donald Trumps first days in office is the top issue on this mornings edition of nbcs meet the press. Joining us live for a preview is Moderator Chuck Todd. Good morning, katy. I venture to say you havent had much sleep in the last few days. Thats all right. Nothing wrong with that. Like the super bowl. A big weekend. Exactly. Lets start off by talking about President Trumps inauguration speech. Did it do what it needed to do or have too narrow a focus . It depends on what you believe is necessary to enact your agenda. I think the new Trump Administration and President Trump believes that the best way to double down on his supporters and make this a movement, say its a movement. What i thought was missing and traditionally has been there, even in divisive times, was not just a call for unity, but almost like an invitation to explain to those that didnt vote for him why he wants to help them, too. The tone was much different than george w. Bush in 2001 who came into office after a disputed election or Richard Nixon in 1969 coming off the 68 election, arguably 1968 among the most divisive years in the 20th century in american history. Both of those had more calls for unity than President Trumps inaugural address. When you want to enact agenda, you need Political Capital. One question they may end up asking themselves on day one is did they start out trying to get more Political Capital at the beginning when they had an opportunity to do so. Speaking of the first 100 days, lets talk about his first 100 days in office. What are we going to see him accomplish right off the bat . I think we know, everything revolves around fulfilling a handful of promises they know theyll be held accountable for. Number one, repealing and replacing obamacare. Thats going to dominate congress. Theyre going to claim theyll do more than Just Health Care in the first 100 days. I think it will be difficult to do anything other than health care. Set that aside, youll see a lot of executive orders. Theyre looking for ways to have an executive order, for instance, that says this one is going to allow us to Start Building the wall before Congress Weighs in. And signing an order saying this will allow beginning renegoti e renegotiating nafta before Congress Weighs in. A penalty procedure that would penalize companies that want to take american jobs and outsource them overseas. Thats what you should expect. The question is how much of that can you then transfer and get congressional support for so he can take that agenda and fully enact it. Thats going to be an open question. Good stuff. Chuck todd, thanks for joining us. Well see you shortly. President trumps counselor kelly aanne conway and minority leader Chuck Schumer will join chuck at 10 30 here on nbc. Fios is not cable.
