The terminal is also used by the president of the United States when he flies in to philly for visits. And when the popes plane lands here this morning he will be greeted by archbishop Charles Chaput and Michael Nutter and his wife and the world families board. Here is the schedule after landing. At 9 45 his motorcade will leave. You saw people lined up there. The pope, the governor and the mayor should arrive there after 10 00. Now mass should begin about 40 minutes after they arrive. After mass, the pope is heading to Independence Hall where he is giving a speech on religious freedom and immigration, scheduled to start after 4 00 this afternoon. Then at 6 45, the pope will arrive at the parkway where he will hop in the popemobile for a papal parade. Probably that jeep he has been riding around in. The art museum, city hall and back is where the route is going to be. The holy father wraps up with a physic festival of families, mark wahlberg, and singers Aretha Franklin and andrea bocelli. 9 00, the pope should be on the way to seminary where he is staying. Here is a live picture above the art museum. The stage is up, security is set for the festival of families concert that you mentioned, vai. Which is all of those singers, alternating with six families from all over the world, who will talk about their faith. This is a look at eighth and market streets in center city philadelphia. People walking along, there is no traffic rolling through. This area is going to be packed with pilgrims to see the pope later today. And the best way to get into the city is mass transit with the special papal passes you had to buy a while ago. If youre in the philadelphia suburbs taking septa you need one of those. You need to have them already. You cant just show up at the septa station expecting to pay for one. They have been purchased. This morning dana is live at the Fort Washington stations one of the stations bringing people in to see the pope today. Good morning. Reporter good morning, vai, tracy. This is one of the highest tickets if not the highest ticketed of the rail stations. What they have done, the planning here, they have corrals set up. These can hold about 800 passengers. This one here empty, look behind me, this one full. They may have their first full train leaving here at about 8 30 when the next train leaves. Were talking with people. They are excited to get into the city. We have a group here now. How close do you think youre going to get once you get into center city . We hope to get as close as we can. Were all excited to see the holy father and we have so much in common with him as native americans and with nature and so we hope to get as close as we can. Were all excited and this is our leader here. Where did you originate from to end up here to go into the city . Louisiana on thursday. My name is sister catery mitchell. We represent the native catholic organization, National Conference and we have a group here from all over the country. How long have you been planning to come here and try and see the pope . Really for the whole year to get a group together to come. And its been an exciting time. Just to see the beautiful faces and happy faces who are so eager to see the pope and be part of this gathering. It wont be long now, the pope scheduled to arrive in philadelphia in just a little while this morning. Again, the next train leaving is about 8 30 this morning. We can tell you that about 300 people have left so far on the six trains that have gone in. You look at this crowd here, the group now just starting to get across, they have to go under the platform, get on the platform, the next train will stop here, it wont leave until the train is full or until all of these passengers are on board. And then they will arrive in center city to join thousands of people hoping to get a glimpse of the pontiff. Hang on to you for a second and ask you some questions. Are you getting a sense like those folks from louisiana that people are coming from all over the country and using that train stop where you are . Reporter we talked to people from michigan, talked to people from mexico, people as you saw from louisiana that came here. This is one of the largee train stations. I tell people Fort Washington it has the highest number of tickets. And people who travel septa tell me yeah, this is a huge parking lot. Take a look. You can see how big the lot here is at this train station. It is accessible for people with strollers, with wheelchairs, theres parking all around here. The township along with septa, springfield township, they have been planning for months. You come to the outside of the train station, pennsylvania avenue, there are screens that direct people where to park, Police Officers helping people get across the street here. So, obviously people did their homework and planned to come here. We are hearing that some of the other train stations, someone described one of the train stations as dead. But some of the septa workers tell us right now is when they think things are going to pick up. How ever people found this spoto others they did their home work to figure out where to be. There are hotels so maybe when they went and looked at some of the websites they were able to figure out if they stayed they could walk here and weve seen a number of people walking in crossing the street with their bags. Deanna, thanks so much. Were talking about it, it takes coordination of all of the Law Enforcement around these train stations because some of them dont have the parking that they have at Fort Washington so you have to walk a ways. You have to you saw in her shot about a dozen or so portapotties. They planned out everything. You are looking live at the ben franklin bridge, also closed to cars for the weekend, crews shut down traffic on the bridge last night. Its now a pedestrian bridge. About a 2mile walk. It crowns at the top as you see between camden and old city philadelphia. Cloudy and cool morning so pretty nice morning if you are walking across the ben franklin bridge. Brittney. Definitely on the cool side. Speaking of closures, the vine street expressway at schuylkill. You can see not a car out there except for the police car there blocking everything so closed for the weekend. There is a live look at the ben franklin bridge. Right now temperatures to participate in the festivities, 64 degrees, our wind speeds at 10 Miles Per Hour heading into the afternoon well see wind gusts closer to 20, 25 Miles Per Hour. The next thing on the agenda, the parade and the festival of families on the ben franklin parkway starts at 6 45. The festival, so 6 00, 72 degrees, cloudy and breezy. We have live cameras everywhere and this is one of the live cameras. This is of manhattans wall street heliport in new york city. The pope will arrive here, he will board that helicopter, helicopter takes him to jfk, boards a plane, that takes him here to philadelphia. Where hes expected around 9 30. Airport security in the u. S. Took a new urgency following the 9 11 attacks. Today in philadelphia expected to reach a new level for the pope. Monique braxton is live at Philadelphia International airport. Tell us what youre seeing. Reporter good morning. The sinner gee in the crowd is exhilarating. Everyone waiting the arrival of pope francis in over an hour. Take a look at whats going on at the airport. You see the papal steps with the logo of the world meeting of families. And just beneath it a majestic red carpet. Just awaiting his arrival, awaiting the rolling out of the red carpet. To the left of that is a plant. That is the plant the mount laurel plant of pennsylvania that will be presented to the pontiff. I can tell you that here there is unprecedented security. Were being told the highest level of security any detail in this country. You see that Police Officers are lining up along side the tarmac. Just to the left of that is the band from Bishop Shanahan in bucks county. They tell us they are going to play 14 songs, among them what we know as the rocky theme song as well as ode to joy which is said to be a favorite of pope francis. You also see a child there in a wheelchair. He is the son of the band director. They are hoping that pope francis will come up and touch him and provide a blessing of healing. Now, everyone here is so excited. There are a few hundred people here at the airport. They are allowing dignitaries to come in at this point. But in about an hour and 15 or 20 minutes, the pontiff is set to touch down here at Philadelphia International airport. And were going to be here to bring it to you live. At the airport, Monique Braxton, nbc 10 news. As monique was speaking a lot of the i dont know if thats his moth wer the boy in the wheelchair take water and lovingly clean the boys mouth. Look forward to seeing what happens when the pope takes in that sight. Now lets get you updated on the roads, a lot of closures to know about. Brittany is doing weather for us. You got a situation here on 76 in spring garden. We did have buses out there but they are moving trying to get to all of the papal festivities. One thing to show you is that there is not even a car on the road. So well continue to update you and show you all of these maps, streets and highways are normally busy into the weekend. Ill move out of the way, show you some of our papal street closures. We want to show you the western edge. So everything is closed from south street all the way out to university city, vile another update coming up. Tracy. Thanks for that. We are told that the pope has arrived at that helipad getting ready to board the helicopter. We have a live picture of it. Im told its coming. Theres the live picture. Were told you cant see him but were told the pope has arrived after staying at that town home in new york last night. Just arrived there, so again, here is whats going to happen. The pope will get on that helicopter, that helicopter will take him to jfk, then he will board that American Airlines plane that he has been riding in while hes been in the u. S. And then that will bring him to philadelphia. Bring him to Atlantic Aviation at philly international where we just had nbc 10s Monique Braxton with all of those people to greet him and the band. So looking forward to that. Again, we will continue to get these live pictures and well continue our coverage in a minute. About 8 15 saturday morning and were going to take you to manhattan. Here is a live picture of the wall street heliport in new york city where the pope had just arrived in his fiat. Its parked in the back of marine one that were looking at. This is marine one that the president of the United States typically uses but on loan for the pope for the weekend he is here. And some folks call it shepherd one, the doors are on the other side of the picture youre looking at so we dont know exactly when the pope will enter marine one. And then he will make his way to jfk. Then he will board an american 777 and make his way to Philadelphia International airport. Should be a quick trip. It wont be long. He is expected around 9 30 touching down in philadelphia. Excitement is growing. We can feel it here. Out to the ben franklin parkway where katy zachry is live to set the scene for us. Hi, katy. Reporter excitement is building out here as well. We are along the ben franklin parkway, later today the festival of families will begin. Its a festival open to the public and it celebrates faith, community, and family. Again, open to the public. Right outside the media riser area where im standing is a lot of activity. I snapped some pictures. Lets go to that video. Its really a bee hive of activity. There are buses going back and forth constantly, any bus, any official vehicle is being escorted by police at this time. People have been lined up along the fence here for some time, hoping to get a great spot for when the festival of families kicks off. And of course the papal motorcade will take place around 6 45 so they are getting an early spot hoping to see pope francis. As we said, the festival of families is a celebration of family, community and faith. Tens of thousands of people are expected to line the ben franklin parkway today. We can get our camera back out here live, behind me is the main stage. This has been set up at eakins oval, the area in front of the art museum has been transformed. This is the stage where the papal mass will take place tomorrow afternoon. Its also the stage where several performers will perform for the crowd later today. There is a secondary stage at logans square where youll find some of the secondary performers, some musical acts, some exhibits im told. There really is a lot to take in along the ben franklin parkway today. A lot of preparation still going on here and well have another update in about a half hour. Back to you guys. Katy, thanks. Those performances will start after the pope leaves the cathedral basilica. Were showing you the security at the parkway, lets show you the security in bale ken wood. What are you seeing . Reporter weve been up here seeing security all over the place. Lets give you a look down on the ground. This is right by the Police Vehicles out there now. You see the Pennsylvania State police also agencies local police from around our area, also the National Guard is out here as well. Pretty much the entire area around here is a ghost town. We see a bus moving into this area as well. In this general area is the seminary that the pope will be staying at for the weekend. So of course theres going to be a lot of security in this area and we see even more security vehicles, National Guard vehicles that are moving into this parking lot nouf. Sort of a holding area for when the pope arrives later on and comes up to this area after the mass today. So were going to be staying up here in sky force 10 looking at everything. Coming up, 676 is shut down, a whole range of things to see from the sky. Were the only Television Helicopter in the sky right now giving you these pictures, and we are seeing just all of the preparations that have unfolded, everything taking months to plan and now were seeing it here live for you right now. In sky force 10, matt delucia, nbc 10 news. Looks likes they may be on maneuvers. The pope is about to board shepherd one in new york. Folks in philadelphia they are gathering along the ben franklin parkway to catch a glimpse of the pontiff. Rosemary connors has a birdseye view of all of the action. She is live from the 18th floor of the Embassy Suites. Reporter tracy and vai, i started my day at my house in old city and walked like most people will do all the way up the parkway here to the Embassy Suites, i want to share with you what i recorded on my ipad of my experience getting up here to give people an idea of what security is like. As i mentioned i started in old city. Figured i could get in at fourth and market at that hour of the day a few hours ago it was not ready. I presume that has changed. Because i couldnt get in at fourth and market i eventually made my way up to around 12th and market where some secret Service Members were stationed. Balls i had a media credential they were able to wand me, check my bags and wave me through. I got to city hall, saw other secret service. Told them i was trying to get to the Embassy Suites on the parkway. They informed me i crossed into what they called a dirty zone, unswept area so they directed me to the nearest check point which was broad around cherry and race street. Once i got to the main check point no problem, was able to get through, tsa was there, secret service was there. Without incident, everyone was friendly. I moved right on through, no problem and then continued my walk along the parkway to the Embassy Suites. Something i learned in this experience is that for example, you are starting your day in old city. Maybe you want to get a close spot as close as you can get if you dont have tickets to Independence Hall for the popes speech later on this afternoon at 4 45. If youre going to start your day there, lets say you get dropped off in old city, maybe coming from new jersey, walk over the bridge, you start in old city and say by the end of the day you want to come up to the parkway for the festival of families this evening, you will most likely have to go through two check points. Keep that in mind. This is a unique situation, its going to be very similar to what you experience at the airports, they go through your bags, and walk through a mag nom meter. Anything you cant bring in similar restrictions here. But people are patient, everyone is excited as we are 18 floors above the parkway for the folks who are gathered right outside of the basilica. Were hearing them cheer, clapping, so this is a calm, haech crowd, eager to see pope francis. Reporting live from the Embassy Suites, im rosemary connors, nbc 10 news. Thanks. So lesson there. Head out early. Here again is a live picture of manhattans wall street heliport in new york city. The pope will board that helicopter, go to jfk, from jfk, a short flight to Atlantic Aviation at Philadelphia International airport. And that will be in a little more than an hour. This is not the first time a pope has visited philadelphia. 1979, Pope John Paul ii came and visited. That was 36 years ago. And Terry Ruggles was a young cub reporter back then. I love when you talk like that. So obviously things that are changed since then. And securitys got to be one of them. I was watching moniques report. Its interesting, 36 years ago there were thousands of people at the airport, and bishops band was there. Today its shanahan. Chef is talking about hundreds than thousands. I think thats significant and talks about the security of things. So a different situation. The other thing i find ironic, new york city is only about 100 miles from here. So they are going to jfk to get in a plane and its mostly ceremonial. Those helicopters could make it here in real quick time. That plane is going to circle around and do a loop and land. Philadelphia is probably in the flight path for that kind of thing. It will be ceremonial. Well see it about 9 45. A comment to matts situation, the security. Hes talking about the state police. One quarter of all Pennsylvania State police are on duty today in philadelphia. 1,000 state policemen pulled in from around the keystone state to do their diligence today. I think thats significant. 44 mounted patrolmen. Thats an unheralded group. Frank rizzo and his wife at the airport 36 years ago and theres the parkway. Pope john paul ii. Were going to interrupt you, terry, because the pope has gotten into marine one, rotorings are on and he is about to take off. About to taxi. I guess they dont taxi, they are going to lift up. Like sky force 10. Head to jfk. Once the pope gets in the air matt will come down. This will be cleared air space. Absolutely. Good point. So it will take maybe a couple minutes you said more ceremonial. They are going to take off and head over to jfk and land there and take a few minutes. While he boards. He boards an american plane. Here is the irony here. He flew to this country on italia, but once he was in this country in washington, in new york, and philadelphia and going back to the vatican he will fly on an American Airlines 777. So, i dont know who makes those decisions but everybody is getting into the act. And there she goes. Liftoff. And the pope is on his way to jfk, should be minutes. We dont have a camera that is able to pick up the chopper on its flight path. But it should just take a few minutes for it to get to jfk. If this was the president there would be three of those because they fly three and you never know which one he is in. In watching him fly i havent noticed three helicopters in his travels in washington and new york. Here is the great thing. We have live cameras so as we see him take off well have a live picture at jfk, then we also have nbc 10s Monique Braxton, her live camera at Atlantic Aviation when he touches down a little more than an hour from now. Pretty nice. Lets take a live look now at the ben franklin bridge which is now foot traffic. You see a train. Our continuing coverage of the pope in philadelphia. Hes on his way. Well continue in a moment. Ng nbc 10s continuing coverage of the pope in philadelphia. Brought to you by these sponsors. In about an hour the pope touches down in philadelphia and then from the airport he heads to center city. Later this morning he will celebrate mass at the cathedral of saints peter and paul. Tim is live at the cathedral now. Reporter a lot of energy here now. The pope we say the pope must be tired. He is 78. I have a younger man with me who has to be tired. The director of communications for the archdiocese. First of all, is this going as planned so far . Is the plan in motion . Everything is going wonderfully. We spent the last several weeks doing final touches, finishing touches to welcome pope francis to the city. Nobodys got more energy than pope francis at any age. Were looking forward to having him on the ground with us, showing him the city, showing him our excitement and embracing him. One of the things that strikes me the cathedral. I dont know if people know, there are no windows on the first floor. In the 1840s there were riots. When they were building it. But what you see now is that its sort of an aging building of course. You had to clean it and it needed a little tech help. What did you do to get it ready . Sure. A little tech. He we had to get the cathedral broadcast ready for this event. The camera system that had to go in, new audio systems, so everything was broadcast ready for tv purposes. We had a system that was okay, 20 years old, now were top of the line. Ready to go. Beyond that, try to maintain the building as best we can. There was lots of cleaning, polishing, general care work for it. Nothing over the top. Pope francis is a simple man. We had to make it ready for this day, for this celebration, and to make it beautiful. Youve seen cuba, youve seen washington, youve seen new york. Is this the best for last . Is that how youre looking at it . I think thats how people in the crowd are. Im a native guy from the sear philly is the best for last. I think youve seen the pope in different ways in each of these places. You see function as head of state in cuba and new york. Philadelphia is where he touches the humanity. The most people have the best opportunity to see him, to be near him, so its going to be something special. I think hes going to have a message for all of us, catholic or not. Why us . A bunch have asked me that. I heard Pope Benedict was the one who signed off on philly. Not that we shouldnt say, maybe like life long inferiority complex some of us have. Why did we get this honor . The bottom line is we dont know. But i think were delighted. This is a moment for us as philadelphia to overcome that complex that were the number two. Were a big city that does big events, were a global city that does global events. Our mayor Michael Nutter says that all the time. This is our chance to do that and a chance to shine with one of the most revered and well respected leaders on the world stage. You are doing a great job. Thanks for everything and after this is over you want you to get a long nap. Looking forward to it. Reporter back to you. He and everyone at the archdiocese working hard for a long time. We showed you the pope taking off from the helipad in manhattan. Now they are waiting for him to arrive here at jfk. He will board that American Airlines plane, and will head to Atlantic Aviation at philly international. Thats going to happen in the next hour. Google mapped that flight from wall street to jfk. Its about 19mile drive, so should be minutes there. This is now were looking at the Atlantic Aviation where the pope is expected to land. And John Butterworth at gm, he told me thursday hes going to invoked privilege as the general manager, he is going to drive that cart out to meet the pope when he arrives. Good morning. Welcome to nbc 10. Im vai sikahema. Im tracy davidson. We have live team coverage. Today is philadelphias turn in the international spotlight. Were about an hour from the pope touching down in philadelphia. One hour, the plane is expected to touch down in philadelphia as we said. The carpet, red carpet is rolled out at the terminal where the papal plane is expected to land. The red carpet made in at the langhorne carpet company. Monique. Were going to head back to new york. These are the choppers where the pope is flying in on to jfk. Hes just about to arrive at jfk. You mentioned it was short, short helicopter ride. Yeah. When i google mapped it as i said, its a 33minute drive, but theres no google map for a chopper. So you know, were going to guess maybe had to have been five, 10 minutes, no more. For him to arrive. And these choppers, these are osprey, and these fly out of delaware so they didnt have too far to go to pick up pope francis. Again, just to reiterate the rundown of time. Atlantic aviation around 9 30, a short greeting ceremony, then will make his way in the motorcade to the cathedral basilica. People are packed into the cathedral and around it waiting to get a glimpse of the pontiff. Interesting, Terry Ruggles next to me who mentioned that the air space will be cleared. This is jfk and i dont see any flights, any planes. Usually if the you have been up there, theres planes every 30 seconds or so. The significance there these were built in delaware county, so the thing that is transporting pope francis was built 10 miles from you and i are sitting. Amazing. He is going to taxi in and they will let him out. You said there is a short stair moan there. A short ceremony at Atlantic Aviation. And then he will board that 777 American Airlines flight. Look likes theres a welcoming party there as he arrives. You pointed out at the tarmac in philadelphia, there was the stairs, and next to a plant. Thats the mountain laurel. Mountain laurel is pennsylvanias state plant. And if you go up in the poconos or if you get north of the lehigh tunnel, thats all you find up there as far as the foliage, the trees and those mountain laurels. Here is the welcoming party in new york. A number of cardinals on the ground and others. And there is the american 777, boeing 777 he will board in minutes. Welcoming him and seeing him off as he heads to philadelphia. Well continue to watch this, this live picture again, we have live cameras everywhere to have you covered on this papal visit. Right now lets get a check of thele forecast balls a lot of people lets go to Monique Braxton first live at Atlantic Aviation. Reporter good morning. There are hundreds of people here on the tarmac at the airport awaiting the arrival of pope francis. Let me show you whats happening now. The steps are in place, you can see the world meeting of family logo. Beneath that you see a carpet that has been rolled up. That is a majestic red carpet that was made by a company in langhorne. To the left of that is the mount laurel plant. That is the Pennsylvania State flower. A bouquet has been made from that plant. That will be presented to the pontiff by a retired Philadelphia Police officer. Were going to take you down to the left and show you that this is just just a speaspecimen were told that the security is unprecedented for any event in the history of this country. No one wants to see anything happen to this pontiff. To the left you see members of the Bishop Shanahan band that are filing in. They are also accompanied by relatives of theirs. Also there is a little boy there in a wheelchair. He is sick and his father is the band director. They have brought him here with hopes of receiving a special papal blessing. So we are getting in place now, awaiting the arrival of pope francis along with dozens of dignitaries that are here in line. And once he arrives those dignitaries will come forward to greet him and then the band will play about 14 songs. Two of them the rocky song as well as ode to joy, which we understand is a favorite of the pontiff. Live from the airport, Monique Braxton, nbc 10 news. He will be there in less than an hour. Here is a live look again at jfk. We dont know exactly which helicopter the pope is on. Several have two have landed. There is another one. But we know he will land here, get aboard the American Airlines plane, and then head to where monique is in Atlantic Aviation. As terry pointed out earlier its not unusual, in fact, typical for the president when he travels in marine one, to have two accompanying choppers with him and of course security reasons nobody knows which one he is in. And same situation here with pope francis. Now lets talk about the weather. A lot of people are trying to get out the door trying to make their way to the parkway. Brittney shipp is watching that. Watching traffic as well. I want to start with one Traffic Camera from the camden side at the ben franklin bridge. Its shut for cars. We zoomed in, we dont have control of it but they have two areas, one is for people that have bag, one for people that dont have bags to be checked so this is just only traffic into the rest of this entire weekend. As we take a closer look at current temperatures, were starting off this morning for philadelphia in the 60s. Your headlines are clouds are going to increase into the rest of today. Breezy conditions expected all day. Even into tomorrow and then im tracking cooler temperatures as we head into saturday and sunday. Currently throughout the area, depending on where you are leaving from to head to philadelphia where at 57 degrees, and pottstown, 56 in allentown, 62 in millville, 68 in wildwood, temperatures at the Atlantic City airport at 67 degrees. Cloudy conditions expected for us but dry. You can see that the area of low pressure is to the south of us and so is all of the moisture. It is helping to create clouds and also the northeasterly wind flow into our region as we go into today. We are not seeing rainfall. So, we will continue to see windy conditions. Wind gusts up to 20 Miles Per Hour and a high of 75. Tracy. Thanks. Now, this is all important to a lot of people in the suburbs trying to make their way in to center city. These papal passes. Septa. We got a couple of them here from one of our producers said make sure i get these back. I need to get home. Lets check in now with one of the busiest stations in the area Fort Washington where deanna is. You talked to some folks who came from louisiana. Tell us what you got now. Reporter well, you know guys, you missed the train. 428 people just boarded a train for philly. When it arrived they screamed, cheered. You look, this is the next group. Each one of those holding pens there, holds about 800 people. So it was about a half train full of people that just left for the city just within the last minute. You can see some people waving across to us. You cant get into that area unless you have the papal pass. And people are bringing a little bit more with them than the pass. Check out this fun group from orlando, florida. I just want anybody to know that im wearing the pontiffs hat today. If the pontiff, if his holiness the pope had a jers we a number on it, id be wearing that too. As close as i can get. Were glad to be here. Hoping to get closer than this . Yes. I just want to see him. I just want to see him. Well be very happy to see the popemobile drive by. The papal posse. Reporter a lot of people want to see the pope. Well send you back live where you may be able to see him making his way to philadelphia. Isnt that the pope that deanna was talking to . The pope as he arrives at jfk, preparing to board his american 777 flight to philadelphia. Take a matter of minutes before he exits that chopper. Marine one as its known. And he has a receiving party at jfk. Should not take too long to board that flight with others headed to philadelphia. Were less than an hour away. Youre watching nbc 10s continuing coverage of the pope in philadelphia brought to you by these sponsors. Were tracking the pope with a lot of live cameras as he makes his way to philadelphia. This is a live picture from jfk as were told that the pope has just landed in the chopper that he took from manhattan. He will board that American Airlines plane, quick, quick, quick plane ride to Philadelphia International. We have a live camera there too. He is still in marine one, has not exited the chopper has landed, rotators are still going. So any minute now he should be exiting marine one and make his way. Probably stop and make his way over to the children that are waving those vatican flags. And of course, he is well known for sort of going off script and here it is, opening now. They opened the hatch. Marine exits. We expect him to be coming out of that chopper any moment. Security detail coming out first. He has a very, very busy schedule. Tim furlong talking with the archdiocese how tired they must be. Its a grueling schedule for the pontiff here in the United States. Looks like archbishop timothy dolan. There he is, you can hear the crowd cheering as they see the pontiff making his way out slowly. You are right, usually when he sees children he goes up to them. What i noticed most when he goes up to the children, when he cups one of their faces in his hand, its just the sweetest thing. And look at him smiling. I know, nbcs jim was interviewing some people who used to work with him when he was an archbishop. He didnt smile much. One of them called him on it. Since he had been pope. Why do you smile now . Why is that. He said look, who thought i was ever going to be the pope. But he smiles a lot when he sees crowds, especially of young people. Not so much in the ceremonial things. The nuns approaching him now. And looks like they are carrying baskets, could be flowers i think that they are holding in their hands. They handed him a bouquet of looks like white roses it appears. So many people want to give him gifts. That little girl earlier this week who wrote a letter to him sayi ing please help my parents stay in the United States. And you have to wonder, look likes he is exchanging a few words, his native tongue is spanish so perhaps they are communicating in spanish. They may or may not be. I dont see his interpreter who is typically at his side, monsignor mark miles. This is a perfect time to introduce who is going to be with us for quite some time today. Father kevin gallagher. And who i might mention met the pope, did a hand shake with the pope earlier this summer. So welcome. Tell us what your thoughts as you see the pontiff greeting the nuns. Thank you, so good to be here and thank you to nbc 10 for the coverage youre giving to this historic time. Its just were an hour away from our holy father the pope arriving in philadelphia as he leaves jfk as you mentioned tracy, i had the opportunity with my own father to greet our holy father in rome. Tracy, you were actually with me, we were in the square together. Wait. Left that out. Lets be clear. I was not beside you and your father when you were shake the popes hand. I tried. Its such a historic time. Its great that you are now covering another papal visit to philadelphia. We were talking about numbers of years that have gone by but well leave that off script today. Thank you very much, father. This is all old hat for terry, his second one. He has been to the vatican and been to rome. Father gallagher, i wanted to ask you, the pope speaks spanish, latin, german and french and english is listed as italian. How fluent is he in english or is it a strug snl. It is a struggle. But i have to say all of the talks hes given so far you can tell he is well prepared and if you really looked at the words and trying to study language, there were very tricky words in some of those talks that he was able to it was slow, poised very well. But he does read it well. But he does struggle with english and admits that openly. He studied english in dublin, ireland, so some question would he have an irish brogue to his speaking but he admits very openly, which thats something they look at, the cardinals consider when they are electing a holy father, how fluent in languages they are. Languages are we know are key. Having said that, father, i have to admit, i think hes gotten even better just in the couple of times i heard him speak english. He has. When i greeted him in rome, he spoke a bit of italian and i say i will not go hungry with the italian i know. But he simply said pray for me, and it is clear as could be. Its exciting, too, to be back here at nbc where i was when the holy father was elected. And tracy, was such an exciting time. You were there in st. Peters square and it was actually people asked where were you when the pope was elected. I was here at nbc 10 and i believe, i might hold history he stumbled but making his way up. Carrying his own bag. As he has. The question if i may. When when elected pope and became benedict was not this person, the second choice in that balloting . Well, its a secret but there was a cardinal, i think was it we see the humanity of the pope going up the steps, not to interrupt you. But just he staggered. Still a smile on his face. His own bag. But yes, they said the happiest, one of the this could be in the realm of rumors or what have you, that when he flew back to buenos aires after the election of Pope Benedict it was the happiest time that he was not elected. Then he returns to rome and we know it was not a long conclave. And he emerged as pope francis. Again, i began to say it was here and i think i was the one to announce that it was Jorge Bergoglio to become our holy father here at nbc 10. I thought it was interesting making observation he was making his way up the steps that he stumbled a couple times. He is 78 years old. Nobody rushed to his aid. I dont know if thats from him, i want to do this on my own. Looks like he was using the bag to balance himself. He gathered and made it back up there. You know, hes 78 yet people half his age, dragging them along. Thinking about the grueling schedule. He is 78 and he is keeping a schedule most of us would have a hard time doing over these last few days. People at the vatican say its because he stays strict with his sleep, with his nap, with his prayer, with his meditation. Thats what they credit it. What he credits with being able to do all this. He is the first pope from the americas, what kind of breakthrough is this for ahead in the future. It sets a precedent but sure. Any thoughts . I think one of the things even i was in the city yesterday at the world meeting of families. It was just so exciting. There was just this energy of hes our pope. Even the four of us sitting here shared different practices of faith, still one god, but hes ours. I think all of us would say hes our pope. And hes ours in many ways because yes, hes from the americas, yes, but i think that the connection, but i think to answer your question, terry, it has taken the leadership of the church outside of italy, we know that benedict to german, st. John paul ii from poland, this is changing. Now they went he even said the cardinals have gone to the other side of the world. In 1978 when john paul ii stood on the balcony he said they have chosen a cardinal from far away. Just north in poland. We went to the other end of the world, the cardinal or the pope said, to elect a new leader. On another level if you think about the past three popes, john paul ii, communism and poland. Ratzinger, benedict, he was from nazi, germany, grew up in austria. You have this gentleman here who grew up in the problems of the huntas in south america. All three coming from troubled land who were suppressed. Yes. Totally part of their makeup. Their dna, to know suffering, to know persecution, and still to bear witness to the faith. Let me interrupt here, father, for a moment. To describe whats going on for our viewers just tuning in. Were looking at the american triple boeing 7 that pope francis has just boarded. Those stairwells, one in the back is still attached. The other where the pope ascended is now pulling back. The media core that travels with the pope boarded on the back part of the plane. And now looks like they are about ready to close both doors. You see the American Flag on the right side of the cockpit and the vatican flag on the left. The code of arms of the vatican on the right side of the doors of the airplane and they are about ready now to take off for Philadelphia International. And t÷ also, the folks in the world meeting of families who have been planning for the better part of a year, you see the pilot there in the cockpit, still has the windows open, the flags, they get pulled in before they close the doors. As they prepare to taxi down the runway at jfk headed to Atlantic Aviation in philadelphia. Vai, you mentioned that the press core was loading into the back of the plane and you know the holy father through father lombardi who is the head of the press office, will most likely take him back again a very short flight. I suspect that he will go back, its interesting to note, not sure of all of the technicalities of who else, im sure someone from nbc but David Oreilly is on the plane, has been traveling from rome, David Oreilly from the philadelphia inquirer, and he actually had a Wonderful Exchange with the pope. He gave him a zuketto, the white skull cap, and they exchanged that on the plane. You know, when you say to the arrival at Atlantic Aviation our mayor Michael Nutter has hes not just a bystander. He has been very much involved in the world meeting of family which is gathering our pope in philadelphia. Gathered 17,000 people this week. So the mayor has been very, very involved. As a matter of fact, when we were in rome tracy and i and several others, the mayor was there, 100 days out from the world meeting of families, had the opportunity to greet holy father. One of the things i think is interesting is Michael Nutter, and hes one of three mayors, Bill Greenwood went to st. Joe, jesuit institution, same thing. And while were talking about st. Joes they are heading to philly for francis this week where they are having students from other jesuit high schools in from across the country, they are staying at the prep and they are walking from the prep to see the speech on the mall and then for the parkway mass tomorrow. In fact, they are probably starting to walk already. St. Joes prepare gave us Cardinal Foley and bishop galante. Actually terry, i think they brag of over ten bishops that have come out of the prep. Im feeling overwhelmed as a priest. Im a jesuit wannabe i always say. But and certainly father swop, the new president of st. Joss prep a remarkable job in Public Relations for the holy fathers visit. He is a philadelphiian. I believe the number is ten. Im going to work on all of the names. Were looking at a closeup shot. I cant quite tell if that is the popes window. Its a closeup shot. Get an idea of this plane that is about to leave jfk and head for philadelphia in just a few moments now. Pilots are making their final checks before they taxi down the runway. Our continued coverage of the pope departing for the airport, heading to philadelphia continues. Here is a live look again. Weve been watching American Airlines plane that the pope has just boarded it you see those engines having turned on. Yes now theyre rolling. We been tracking the events, the pontiff boarding that helicopter and now boarding American Airlines plane and on his way to philadelphia. Weve been talking about this for years now. Today is the day. He arrives at Philadelphia International in about half an hour yes. Not too far from now at Philadelphia International people are gathered there standing there
