comments since her disappearance. and tb scare, hundreds of newborn babyies exposed by a health worker in texas. parents are lining up to get their kids tested "today," monday, september 22nd, 2014. and good morning. welcome to "today" on a monday morning. i'm matt lauer, along with hoda kotb, al roker and tamron hall. savian is on maternity leave. natalie is off this morning. >> it's a busy day. >> we've had a good time this morning. i'm skimming trees, but -- >> lenny kravtiz was practicing in the studio. >> yes. >> it was so fun. he went through the song a couple of times. matt was going all fan girl. i was taking a picture. >> that's al roker's cousin. >> yeah. >> wow! >> he will be doing a song in our studio a little bit later. three afghan soldiers who went missing off a national guard base in massachusetts. jim miklaszewski has more on that. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, matt. two captains and a major were on a saturday night field trip to a shopping mall in cape cod when they simply disappeared. the three soldiers were in the u.s. to take part in an annual military training exercise at the national guard base there in cape cod. now, law enforcement officials, both federal, state and even military have launched a massive search in an effort to find them. now, what is still unanswered question here right now is whether this was a spur of the moment decision by these three soldiers to go on a sight-seeing tour of america or whether this was well planned in advanced and why. matt? >> mick, before you leave, i've heard officials saying they don't consider these three to be a threat to the public and i'm curious why they're so sure about that. >> well, any of these visiting soldiers that come to the u.s. for this kind of training are well vetted in advance for any possible ties to militant groups or the taliban there in afghanistan. without providing specifics, officials this morning appear to be very confident that these three pose no immediate threat to the u.s. >> jim miklaszewski at the pentagon this morning. mick, thank you very much. the man who made it over the fence at white house all the way to the front door of the executive mansion is in court today, an unprecedented security breach at the white house. now the secret service is reconsidering how it handles security around the white house. nbc's kristen welker is at the white house this morning. good morning, kristen. >> hoda, good morning. the suspect, 42-year-old omar gonzalez, will appear in a federal court here in d.c. later today. he will be charged with carrying a deadly weapon. extra patrols and surveillance around the white house as it investigates and this morning a law enforcement official says the agency is now considering new security checkpoints for tourists that would be set up blocks away from the white house. omar gonzalez served his country in iraq, but he will face a judge today. >> everybody out right now. go back! >> after law enforcement officials say he breached the most heavily guarded house in the country friday night. this cell phone individuvideo c the chaos. gonzalez jumped over the fence, sprinted to the first family's residence and entered through the unlocked door. he was quickly apprehended. officials say he had a knife in his pocket. >> it took him 15 to 20 seconds to reach the steps of the white house. >> the white house staff and press corps were evacuated. the first family had left for camp david moments earlier. in a statement the agency said the location of gonzalez's arrest is not acceptable. >> i have great respect for the secret service. this is absolutely inexcusable. >> law enforcement official says the investigation will include a look at why the canine units weren't dispatched, usually protocol. >> you certainly cannot allow an intruder to make it that far. if you have to kill the individual, then you kill the individual. >> reporter: fence jumpers aren't unusual, making it inside the executive mansion is unprecedented. it's another setback for an agency trying to rebound from a series of embarrassments, including the 2012 scandal involving prostitutes in columbia. now new questions about the leadership of this storied agency. >> that's what the secret service exists for, to protect the white house, the office of the presidency, by whatever means necessary. >> reporter: now while shots weren't fired, officials say gonzalez didn't appear to be armed. his former stepson tells us he possesses plenty of fire power but didn't want to use it. the white house says the president has full confidence in the agency. hoda, matt? >> kristen, thank you so much. police in pennsylvania say they're getting closer to finding the suspect in the ambush and killing of a pennsylvania state trooper. over the weekend they found several items, including a gun that they say suspect eric frein may have been planning to use later. nbc's ron allen has more on this. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning to you, matt. police say they believe eric frein planned this ambush and his escape for perhaps as long as a year. they believe he was in the woods over there, shot across the highway, killing one trooper, wounding another right in front of the barracks. now police believe they're closing in on the man who has caused so much fear and mayhem. they look ready for war, massive manhunt, tightening the perimeter around the suspect's home, finding a trail of weapons like this ak-47, possibly used in the ambush. >> this is his backyard. we are pushing him hard. he is no longer safe. >> reporter: as the drag net closes in and the two-day emergency lockdown for thousands of residents in immediate danger now lifted, many wonder how far away is safe enough. this man is leaving his home for now. do you believe he's still around? >> they believe he's still in the area. >> that's what they're saying? >> yes. >> reporter: his neighbor is staying put. >> i don't believe he will be shooting civilians. he has something in for law enforcement. that's why i'm not nervous. >> reporter: he may have been spotted several times, traveling up to 20 miles in rugged terrain on foot. they try to reassure communities where many businesses and schools have been shut down for days. is it safe enough to reopen schools? >> that's a decision individual school districts will have to make. we have every reason to believe that frein is focused on law enforcement and specifically the state police. >> reporter: some schools closed for a day or two will open with added security measures but it's still too dangerous for some 900 students in the pocono mountains to return to class. there's no strong indication when all of this is going to end. matt? >> ron allen in pennsylvania, thank you very much. an investigation is under way into a deadly tour bus crash in northern delaware. two people were killed, nearly 50 others hurt. anne thompson is outside the hospital in delaware this morning. good morning, anne. >> reporter: good morning, hoda. delaware state police and the national transportation safety board are investigating this deadly crash. xt involved only one vehicle, the bus. and every single person on board was injured. >> one man saying my wife, my wife, my wife. that keeps replaying in my mind. >> reporter: sunday afternoon drive turned deadly on this delaware highway when a tour bus carrying 50 people crashed and overturned. delaware state police say the bus was traveling southbound on route 1 when it hit a curve on an off-ramp, flipping on to its roof. the bus continued sliding down a slight embankment, rotating on to its left side where it finally came to a stop. >> one adult female was underneath the bus where she was trapped underneath that bus. >> that woman died at the scene. another woman was later pronounced dead at the hospital. the remaining 47 passengers on board and the driver suffered a range of injuries. >> injuries vary widely. these patients, some have head injuries, some have injuries to their torso, ribs, abdomen, fractures, extremities. so multiple levels of injury. >> reporter: 19-year-old college student and a friend were on the way home from the mall when they saw the overturned bus. they pulled their car over and jumped out to help. >> first aid equipment, pass out gauze, bandages, whatever we could at the time, try to comfort people. it made me think about how fragile life is at times. >> reporter: now, authorities say the passengers were part of a sight seeing group, sponsored by a company called e-world travel and tours in new york city. they were on their way back to new york after visiting washington, d.c. hoda and matt? >> sad story, anne. thank you very much. natalie has the day off. tamron hall is at the news desk. >> fire crews in northern california are working around the clock to try to stem a massive wildfire. this morning the king fire is still burning out of control, even with thousands of firefighters on the front lines. kristen welker -- kristen dahlgren is there. kristen, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, tamron. there was a little help from a little rain this weekend. certainly not enough in these drought conditions. the other problem was that it brought heavy cloud cover so they had to ground the air operations. they've been dropping record amounts of retardant on this fire. they weren't able to do that yesterday. meanti meantime, it made things slick for firefighters, some 5,000 firefighters from around the country now here, battling this. there are ten homes now that have been lost in this and a lot of people, thousands still evacuated, still waiting to see when they'll be able to come home and what will be there. we're far away from where the flames are at this point. up in lake tahoe, they canceled the ironman triathlon because they're concerned about the air quality. they expect this to burn for weeks, tamron. >> very frightening there be, thank you very much, kristen dahlgren. when the baltimore ravens knew about the ray rice incident inside that atlantic city elevator. this, as the nfl prepares to meet with advisers to help over haul its personal conduct policies. nbc's peter alexander has been following the story from the very beginning. peter, good morning. >> good morning, tamron. they'll meet specifically with players union representatives to talk about how to fix the league's personal conduct policy. we're keeping our eyes on the baltimore ravens, addressing that new report, saying team officials were made aware that rice had punched his then fiance hours after it happened. numerous errors, false assumptions and misunderstandings. rice sa goodell seemed to regret being talked out of a tougher penalty. tamron? >> what's going on in russia? >> what's going on with the rain? it's not where people need it in northern california. i'm telling you, it's crazy stuff. flash flood watches and flash flood warnings for western texas but really central and eastern texas, the rain. flood warnings around the city of pecos. we'll be watching that. remnants of odile hanging around. monsoonal moisture coming in. heavy downpours, flash flooding, especially in the high terrain. these areas have picked up 18 inches of rain in the last week. they're going to get another one to three inches throughout portions of new mexico today. so, flash flooding is going to be a problem. we'll have your local forecast coming up in the next 30 seconds. 14 years to the day, we got our first prius. ♪ sometimes the most daring ideas... ...are the ones you can count on the most. ♪ the prius. toyota, lets go places. good morning. i'm meteorologist bill henley. lots of sunshine today and plenty of wind, too, a gusty wind, this afternoon gusting to 25 miles an hour. that will keep temperatures in the upper 60s and low 70s today. autumn arrives tonight at 10:29. tomorrow morning it will certainly feel like fall weather with temperatures in the 40s to 50 degrees. sunny skies, 70s for tuesday and wednesday, then a chance of showers thursday. and here comes the heat, summerlike conditions for the first weekend of fall. have a great day. >> fall arrives 10:29 this evening, and just about a month earlier, tamron started working on changing over her closet. >> tamron has a big closet. i'll come and help. >> thank you. >> you need backup. >> a closet with an echo. >> exactly. a major health scare at an el paso hospital has parents on edge this morning. hundreds of infants who were born there will be tested for tuberculosis. kerry sanders is outside providence hospital in el paso. with more on that, kerry, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, matt. scary, indeed. parents will begin lining up, those parent whose had their children here at the hospital after receiving a letter from the health department, telling them to show up as soon as possible. turns out one of the employees on the maternity ward was infected with tb and may have exposed children, all those newborns, to the contagious disease. >> i need some answers. >> reporter: it is the worst possible nightmare for a hospital and parents. newborn babies exposed while still in the nursery to tuberculosis, a disease, if left unchecked, could be deadly. she is one of more than 700 mothers in texas and new mexico, who had their children here in the last year. >> tb is a serious but treatable disease. >> reporter: all of them got this alarming letter from the el paso department of health, warning their infant may have been infected with tb. a hospital employee who worked in the nursery was recently diagnosed with tuberculosis. they're not releasing her name but say she has been put on leave. >> babies are vulnerable. their immune systems are not as strong. they're at risk, without a doubt. >> reporter: in a statement, providence memorial say we take our obligations to our patients, employees and the community very seriously. we have taken actions that are designed to prevent a similar incident from occurring. >> even if he's not sick, it's just that fear that it gives me that he could be and that i couldn't prevent it is what kills me inside. >> reporter: after discovering the employee with tb, health officials inspected the hospital here and found that there were other areas where there were infectious disease control protocol problems. the hospital has been told they have to correct those problems and have until tomorrow to present a plan to show exactly what they're doing. matt? we'll talk to the two guys about how to build up google and the secret to its success and, if interested, how to get your foot in the front door. paula dean will stop by, her first time after her tearful visit that impacted her life and career. that's paula dean tomorrow right here on "today." we begin this half hour with the latest on the search for missing uva student hannah graham. on sunday her parents spoke out for the first time, asking anyone who may know anything to come forward. this as police speak to the person of interest in her disappearance. national correspondent craig melvin has more on that. good morning. >> matt, good morning to you. there is also this weekend that massive search, roughly 1,000 people showed up looking for any sign, any traits of hannah graham. as you mentioned, the first time we saw her parents, as they made that emotional plea. police maintain there is someone out there who knows something, perhaps someone else who saw something. >> this is every parent's worst nightmare. i'm certain that everybody in this room and those watching knows that what happened to hannah could happen to their child. >> reporter: speaking out for the first time publicly since she went missing, hannah graham's parents pleading for help. >> hannah is also our little girl. she's our only daughter. hannah is also the oldest granddaughter and she's actually my parents only granddaughter. she's enormously precious to us all. please, please, please, if you have anything, however insignificant you think it may be, call the police tip line with anything that just might help us to bring hannah home. >> the 18-year-old uva college student simply disappeared early last saturday morning. >> i believe jesse matthew was the last person she was seen with before she vanished off the face of the earth. >> reporter: police are now naming 32-year-old jesse matthew a person of interest and say that's him in this surveillance video walking with graham just after 1:00 am. >> we want to talk to jesse matthew. >> reporter: witnesses saw the two together at a local bar, according to police, who believe the college student may have gotten into matthew's orange chrysler. he is wanted for reckless driving after he went into the police station saturday asking for a lawyer. police say he left without being questioned and took off at a high speed, losing authorities. this weekend, more than 1,000 people helped search for hannah, as her parents desperately hold on to hope. >> all we want to do now is to bring hannah home safely. >> plus will continue searching today. there is also now a $50,000 reward for any information that leads to the whereabouts of hannah graham. matt? >> craig melvin, thank you very much. charlottesville police chief, chief longo, thank you for joining us. >> good morning, matt. thanks for having me. >> jesse matthew comes into the police station and then asks for a lawyer and leaves without answering any questions. what was the reason he came in, in the first place? just to get a lawyer? >> you know, matt, honestly, it's very bizarre. it's certainly nothing i've experienced in 33 years in this business. he came into the station and he had two family members with with him. he asked for a lawyer. we obtained a lawyer for him. the lawyer came. the two of them spoke briefly and jesse left. to be clear, this high-speed exit that he took was somewhat after he left the station. he went to a location in our neighboring jurisdiction, he was surveilled at that time, not covertally, overtally. >> so he knew police were following him. he gets in the car, takes off at a high rate of speed. that was more than a day ago. have you had any tips, any leads in the last 24 hours that give you any idea where he may be? >> we did follow up on some leads yesterday, as to a location in a neighboring jurisdiction where he may have been. we've went to that location. he is not there. we're taking every effort that we know of to try to determine his location today. we'll continue to pursue him until such time as he is located. >> you've searched his apartment, his car. have you found any evidence, forensic evidence, anything on phone records that makes you more suspicious of him? (giggling): yoga! you have an operational dvd player? you also can't touch my digeridoo. digeridoo? or didgeridoo? now at 7:43 this morning on "rossen reports" new technology is literally giving thieves the key to your front door and you won't believe how vulnerable you are. national correspondent and the hardworking jeff rossen explains how this works and what you can do to protect yourself. >> when you lock your doors at night you feel pretty safe, right? >> yeah. >> it's pretty reassuring when you hear the dead bolt turn. a thief would have to break down your door or break something else to get into your house. at least that's what i thought. we came across new technology that would allow cooks to open your front door and it doesn't take much, just a cell phone and a few dollars. this is how it has worked for decades. want your keys copied? go to a hardware store in person. the only way a thief could get your keys is to physically steal them off a table or out of your bag. this new app called keys duplicated is a game changer. snap a clear photo of any house key with your cell phone and upload it to their website. their sophisticated software analyzes the grooves of the key down to the tiniest millimeter all from that photo you sent them. then this machine drills out the key's teeth, a perfect match to the key in the picture. the key is mailed right to you and it's cheap. only $6 a key, and no i.d. verification. does this disturb you? >> yes, it does. >> reporter: police departments across the country are worried thieves will take advantage, snapping stealth photos of your keys in public, then showing up at your doorstep with your key, unlocking your door with ease. and walking right in. >> the thing is, you wouldn't even know that you've been had. you still have your keys. you don't know someone's taken a photo of it. >> not until something happens to you. >> reporter: does it really work? my producer, charlie, that's him, is about to test it out. while i'm out of town for another story, he snaps a quick pick of my house key, lying on a table. then he uploads it to the site, gives his home address and, voila, just a few days later, duplicates of my keys arrive at his apartment. but instead of breaking in, charlie wisely waited for me to get back. >> all right. the moment of truth, does it work? >> let's open it and find out. >> reporter: just to show you and everyone at home, my front door, it is locked. let's triet key. >> try the key. >> reporter: wow! >> it was that easy. now we're inside your house. that could have been a total stranger who walked up with that key. >> or a thief. we went to the ceo of keys duplicated. the good news is that we tried your technology. it works like a charm. >> great to hear. >> the bad news is, it worked like a charm and police say it could work like a charm for bad guys, too. >> yeah. there's no doubt that this could be used by somebody to copy somebody else's key. i just don't think it's very likely that it will happen. if it ever happens, it's going to be a jilted ex-lover or a disgruntled co-worker, people who have other ways of breaking in to your house. >> reporter: his company is still new and so far no reported cases. he says they require a valid e-mail address and credit card number, creating a paper trail. but, he admits, they don't verify it's your key or even your credit card. >> there's no i.d. verification. the address i give you could be a bogus p.o. box. there's no other i.d. verification, is there? >> for i.d. verification, there is not. that's true. >> reporter: does that concern you? it concerns police we spoke to. >> security is our top priority. we're constantly improving it. of course it's a concern. and i say we're on it. >> reporter: but police say until that loophole is closed, this company aimed at convenience may pose a danger. by the way, keys duplicated said they will not copy car keys or high-security keys and will not accept pictures that are blurry or taken too far away. the advice from police, treat your keys like you would your driver's license or credit card. do not leave them laying around. by the way, roker, i saw you taking photos of the screen. i changed the locks on my house. good try. >> thanks for making us all feel a little bit more vulnerable. appreciate it. it's no secret that politicians will go to great lengths to get your vote but head stands at a party? say it ain't so up next. a little girl threw a derek jeter foul ball back on the field after these i got this. >> you know, i thought i was going to be looking for someone that was going to be really unique sounding. all the people i love growing up don't necessarily sing great. >> like who? >> david bowie. he had the character voice. do you know what i'm saying? you're there in the blind, not seeing people and you're listening, sometimes those incredible singers that maybe are soulful but i wouldn't think i would go for, i just couldn't deny it. i was like, i have to press. because i can't do that. so i was like -- >> and so you spin the chair around. and you know what happens on the show now. sometimes after you spin the chair around, you then have to pitch that person to join team gwen. >> yeah. >> let's pretend i have just wowed you vocally. >> okay. >> you just spun the chair around. pitch me to join team gwen? >> okay. what's up? obviously you want to be with team gwen. i can do this. >> what can you do for me that the other coaches can't? >> that's the awkward part of the show like i'm so great. but i look back at all the things that i have done. it's like, wow, i have a lot of advice to give. i've been in a band since i was 17 years old, so many different varieties. i was in a garage band and a band that got on the radio and then i went around the world on tour and i did a solo career, recorded all these records. there is a lot of advice to give. >> did you have someone in your early days of your career to give you that advice? did you have a mentor? >> not at all. it was our procrastinations going to school. we were never trying to make it. do you know what i mean? it was this is super fun to do today, right now. and then we started getting more. and we were nine years together doing that in the garage before we ever had any success. you could tell we were doing it for fun, you know what i mean? i don't know how our quirky band got on the radio next to nirvana at the time. you know what i mean? >> there's this recurring theme in your life. i don't know how this happened. >> how did this happen to me? >> two days after i started i had my own little office and then someone moved in with me. he said his office was too crowded and i said, i'm the ceo. he said what's that? >> there was no vertical hierarchy in their view? >> there apparently was no door either. >> and there was no process to planning. i came in and i have lots of experience running product management in companies. my job was to create some process. i gave them one of the best plans i could come up with. and larry immediately said that's stupid. don't hand me the engineers, just go sit with them. >> didn't you threaten to quit early on? >> i think every two weeks. thankfully, eric talked me out of it. >> the company didn't run under any sort of traditional model. it was smart people attacking a new problem. it just moves forward and i said well it needs some structure. >> you've built an incredible company that's admired by a lot of people, admired especially by young people. college students constantly mention google as a place they want to go to work. let's now talk to those students out there still in college. let's talk to their parents and let's give them the key to unlock the door at google. who are you hiring right now? >> you want to be a smart creative. >> smart creative? define it for me. >> some kind of technical knowledge or passion, somebody who has some kind of business interest, but they have to be curious. they can't be boring. >> you call them learning animals and you evaluate them on something called googliness. >> everyone needs to have a rocket scientist. i said do we have a rocket scientist? yes, we hired a rocket scientist. what do they do? we don't know. >> what are some of the weird or unusual questions you ask them that lets you know they've got that googliness that you're looking for? >> i tend to ask them what surprised them. the reason that's my favorite question, it really allows you to understand how they think. if someone can tell you how something surprised them, then they're telling you how they thought before the surprise. >> how did your interview go? >> when you were hired, did they ask you these kinds of questions? >> they asked all sorts of crazy questions. they asked me explain something complicated. i was a simple guy and didn't have something complicated to explain. i decided to explain courtship. >> between couples? >> dangling the hook and i explained i sent my future wife a dozen roses before i had ever met her. >> once you hire these people -- >> that's clear planning. >> it worked. >> once you hired these people, you say to them, imagine the unimaginable. >> yeah. >> think outside the box g for the moon shots. these are the projects other companies aren't doing. driverless cars, contact lenses that can read blood sugar levels, even a product delivering broadband to millions of people around the planet using helium balloons. you want your office environment to have a little bit of science fiction in it? >> we want people to dream much higher. everybody ends up being a cog in a wheel. we want to find people who imagine a different world. by the way, not everything works. but when they work, these are global. >> is anything too crazy? is any idea too far fetched to at least listen to? >> no. >> no. >> and a lot of them really are crazy. >> are you -- go ahead. >> so the astro teller likes to say if you give them a project to build a car that gets 70 miles per gallon complete different than building a car that gets 500 miles per gallon. imagine what you're going to learn from the failures trying to build a car that gets 500 miles per gallon. >> i'm working for google, a smart creative and i come up with one of those moonshot ideas. why should i stick around and develop it with you guys? why shouldn't i leave the company immediately and go do it on my own and turn around and sell it to you for hundreds of millions of dollars? >> one of the tricks is that these systems need a lot of people, lot of platform and a lot of tools and google keeps these people because we need the platform that we built up over the last decade to finish. innovation is on the top of others. >> do you worry about that person out there who has the next idea that will topple google? >> come on. >> i don't even open cans. a beef stew in one pot. you can make this pretty much in no time at all. small pieces of beef. >> brown. >> brown in olive oil and one onion after they're browned and two tablespoons of flour, which thickens the gravy. cook that down a little bit. add your liquid, salt and pepper. >> broth. >> broth and water. and when you're finished with that. >> looks like this. >> move over here. this is what it looks like. add your potatoes, carrots, so dlektable. >> you put them in later so they don't get too mushy? >> right. and then add your egg noodles and this is your beef-a-roni. >> how long does it take to cook? >> 30 minutes. the noodles cook right in the gravy. right before serving add a little bit of vinegar. it brightens the taste. here it is. look how pretty. little bit of parsley. >> i'll try that as you move on to hoda. >> still at mac n cheese. >> you love it, right? >> if i could eat cheese. >> that's the onions and butter. half a cup of flour and cook the flour a little bit. add your milk. six cups. a little at a time. three-quarters of a cup. >> should i be dumping this in? >> we'll cook that flour a little bit more. and then add your -- this is what it looks like. macaroni is already cooking in the mixture. >> how long are you cooking that macaroni? >> just until it's tender and add three cups of sharp cheddar. this is a rich dish but -- one cup of gruyere and dijon. this is for the kids. they have to have something. >> to heck with the kids. >> you like this, don't you? and this is parmesan, bread crumbs and butter. this is the topping. when that's ready, melt it. cook it until everything looks like that. >> put this whole thing in the ov snen. >> yes. >> how long? >> just till it's browned. >> taste that. >> now here is a good one. >> pork chops, bacon and cabbage. i love you, martha. >> this is your favorite, right? >> all three of these afghan soldiers, two captains and a major, were in the u.s. for an annual training exercise that takes place at the national guard air base up there in cape cod. and it appears they were on some kind of saturday night field trip there at a shopping mall when they just disappeared from view. and they haven't been heard from since. now, according to u.s. officials, state, local, federal and even military law enforcement are seriously looking after to figure out where these three men may have disappeared to. and the big question is today, did they preplan this in advance before they ever got here, and why? or did it simply strike their fancy that they would make a spur of the moment decision to go on a sight-seeing tour of the u.s.? those are questions that remain. now, u.s. officials insist that none of these three afghan soldiers had any kind of weapons. those would have been taken away after any kind of exercise. and they don't believe -- and it's not clear exactly why, but they say because of a very stringent vetting process, before they ever get to the united states, to figure out if they have any ties whatsoever to militant organizations or from afghanistan the taliban. these three were cleared to come to the u.s., not considered a threat. and, quite frankly, are not considered an imminent threat to americans even during this search. willie? >> wow, fascinating story. keep us posted on this. we'll see where this goes. mick, thanks so much. an update on a story we've been talking about for several days. our hearts go out to hannah graham's family. now authorities say this missing uva student, that there's a person of interest in this case. she's been missing since last saturday and hannah's parents spoke out for the first time since their daughter's -- their only child's disappearance. here is what they said. >> this is every parent's worst nightmare. i'm certain that everybody in this room and those watching knows that what happened to hannah could happen to their child. hannah is also our little girl. she's our only daughter. she's james' little sister. hannah is also the oldest granddaughter and she's actually my parents' only granddaughter and she's enormously precious to us all. please, please, please, if you have anything, however insignificant you think it may be, call the police tip line with anything that just might help us to bring hannah home. >> wow! >> i mean, you hear that and you just say how can a person, if you know anything, not come forward at this point? we've heard that same plea from the police chief there. certainly, we've talked a lot about this surveillance video. it shows hannah leaving her apartment around 9:30 pm last friday night. then we see her running in front of a gas station. at 1:00 am, there's surveillance video from the downtown area, pedestrian mall area. you see her and someone following behind her. >> they know who that is. >> they know who that person is, 32-year-old jesse matthew, who was seen with her. he is a nursing student or nursing aid of some sort. and apparently, according to police, jesse matthew went into the police station on saturday. he asked for a lawyer. they got him a lawyer. and then at some point, he just left the police station without being questioned. and it's a very strange story at this point. at some point later that day, he was chased by police. >> he went to albemarle, a neighboring county. he knew he was being followed. >> yes. >> takes off at a high rate of speed, loses them. >> and now hasn't been seen since. >> hasn't been seen since. >> this morning, matt spoke with the chief of police for the area and here is what he to say about this. >> i believe jesse matthew was the last person she was seen with before she vanished off the face of the earth! >> so, you know, listen, at this point, there is no suspect. be very careful with these persons of interest is what they say at this point. but, you know, i guess police say get an attorney, come back and answer the questions. let us know what you saw. maybe can you help authorities find hannah or add some of the missing pieces to this puzzle. but to suddenly disappear and not answer these questions -- >> suddenly. >> he's not a suspect. >> no. >> it is fair to ask why he took off at a high rate of speed. >> why did he come to the police station, to begin with, asking for an attorney, and then take off. >> listen, he may say i jetted off because i think they think i'm guilty. whatever the case is. you admitted you saw her. go in with your attorney, which is your legal right, and answer these questions. on a lighter note. you go to the ballpark, bring your glove, hope to catch a foul ball. can you imagine catching a ball in the final games of derek jeter, the great? >> i normally start with just drums, guitar and bass. and then i build on it from there. that's my skeleton. and whatever the song calls for, i just start putting on top. but, you know, i love playing instruments and that's -- i was inspired as a kid by stevie wonder, who played all the instruments on his record, by prince, people like that, who were multiinstrumentalists. i get a lot of joy playing instruments. people say, what, are you a control freak? did you know right away? >> we had an inkling, when we shot the pilot, started going through, testing process and showing it to people and so on and there was a great response. so going into the season premiere last year, we had a sense that we had something that people might respond well to. but i think the -- we surpassed expectations. >> well, what were you talking earlier about not knowing the life span of a series. when you get a script, you have to -- you make a decision to be part of something, you -- it is like seven years you have to commit to. >> you're taking a flyer on something you're reading that is 40 minutes. >> yeah. >> that's the fun of it too. i've been very lucky. i in the last ten years or so i've been able to jump back and forth between film and television and stage and just finished doing "the avengers" this summer and they're so dink. i think one of the -- one of the things i love most about a television show, and especially this show where the possibilities for surprise is so high, i mean limitless, that i sort of -- i mean, i really treat the show almost like a viewer. and i have great an t anticipat for what next week is. >> a role of a lifetime there. >> really fun. >> great to see you. congratulations. give our love to everybody on the cast. they have all been with us. great cast.
