Welcome to today on a monday morning. Matt has the morning off. The crowd is here because Kathie Lee Gifford joins me on the show. I was going to say you dont look familiar, but you do today. We begin with the earthquake in nepal. The death toll is rising. Its now more than 3,700 people including 3 americans. A u. S. Military plane may arrive today carrying muchneeded supplies and search and rescue teams. And take a look at this. This is chilling video of the moment that avalanche swept through base camp. People are running for cover as they are overcome by a wall of. In a moment we are going to talk to a man who was there. First lets get to Richard Engel whos in kathmandu for us this morning. Ri y reporter officials here tell us any death toll is really just an estimate. They are still coming to terms with the scale of this disaster and the aftershocks are continuing. The entire city of kathmandu seems to have moved outside. Families live on curs trying to keep their children fed, clean, and most of all away from buildings. The Historic Center of kathmandu is the citys most popular by far with ancient temples and palaces and it bore the brunt of this earthquake. Where a tower had been over 150 years old, now just a stump. A temple reduced to a pile. Volunteers today were digging with their hands. They dont expect to find survivors, just bodies. Police have already found around 150 of them in this area. This woman used to come to this exact spot. Why are you helping out today . Ive been here every day. We used to come here and hang out. We used to sit around here. Its my country. Its my people. Reporter this is also the height of tourist season. An american visitor captured this video of guests huddled in front of their hotel during the earthquake and aftershocks. There was a huge crowd and we had a couple of big aftershocks afterwards. Everybod get down get down. Reporter kathmandu is on edge. But whats happening to the east on the slopes of mt. Everest is far less c. There were more avalanches sunday. Trails and camps swept away. At least three american have died on the mountain. A few dozen survivors have been rescued. Its unknown how many people are trapped on everest. A military official told us here that teams are now heading out to remote parts of nepal which are difficult to access even under normal circumstances which now may be inaccessible. All right. Richard engel, thank you very much. As we mentioned, crews are slowly beginning to rescue climbers who have been trapped for two days by the avalanche on mt. At least 18 are dead there, dozens injured. For so many there was simply no time to run. The ground is shaking. Reporter this new video shows climbers trying to outrun a wall of snow. Fleeing into the tent as the avalanche heads straig. Among the dead three americans. Marisa eve girawong from new jersey who served as a doctor at a base camp posting on facebook just hours before passing. Day 28 on this arduous journey, snow is falling and my food cravings here are at an alltime high. Dan fredinburg was on a threeweek expedition to everest. Here is where all the things we have are. He was one of the greatest loves of my life. Tom taplin also from california also died on the mountain while filming a documentary. His wife said this was never supposed to be a dangerous expedition. An earthquake was unfathomable to me. Its just so shocking. Reporter saturdays earthquake comes just a year after an avalanche claimed the lives of 16 Nepalese Sherpas ending the 2014 climbing season. Since then a new route has been put in place by local authorities avoiding areas that have a high risk of avalanche. Dozens of injured climbers have returned here to kathmandu, an all too familiar scene of horror and terror on the worlds tallest mountain. Miguel almaguer thank you so much. First and foremost wed like to say how sorry we are to hear about your base camp doctor marisa eve girawong. How are you doing today. Today the climbers are okay. Weve come down from the camp where weve been two nights since the avalanche occurred. Today we descended and will evacuate base camp. Take us back if you dont mind when the earthquake hit. Where were you and describe what was happening. I was leading a team in the crew between camp one and camp two on mt. Everest. We were about twothirds of the way up when we heard an awful noise and heard avalanches coming down on either side of the valley. We thought we were going to get taken out. Thankfully we were only dusted by a snow cloud. Got on the radio checked with the base camp and learned of the awful destruction of the base camp. There are Food Supplies obviously, things you guys need. Tell us how important it is everyone get off the mountain as quickly as possible. The route from base camp to base camp was totally destroyed by the earthquake and the avalanches that came down. Tried to find a route back down but it was impossible. And there were the aftershocks creating more danger. The only option was to fly by helicopter. Fortun a break in the weather today. This had to be like the worst possible time for this type of a tragedy to happen. Because explain that this is actually the time where a lot of people try to climb that mountain. Absolutely. Yeah. The climbers were being set up from base camp. Staff a standing by. Unfortunately base camp was hit the hardest. We were for up in the mountain we lucked out. But a huge rock and ice snow cloud came down behind base camp. Garett madison, we wish you all the best. Thank you for sp. And everyone talks about in that region he are helping people in a way theyve never seen before. Its not turning into one of those things where sometimes theres rioting and looting and that kind of thing. You can see the lightning going on in the background. As we said 19 tornadoes already. More on the way. Heres what weve got going on. You look at that flooding. Right now weve got the subtropical jet. A lot of gulf moisture coming in. Right now we have tornado watches in effect for eastern texas and its extending across a good portion of southern louisiana until afternoon. We also have tornado watches. Were watching all of this thro so we have the risk of strong storms stretching from houston up to shreveport, mobile, alabama, new orleans as well. Enhanced area 13 Million People at risk. The tornadoes from new orleans back to lake charles. Tomorrow the risk continues from new orleans into tallahassee. About 2 Million People. Plus we have flood watches in effect because were looking at anywhere from 3 to 4 inches of rain. As you can see, the rainfall is going to be very heavy stretching along southern louisiana on into the panhandle of florida. So flooding tornadoes, damaging winds, hail. All a big possibility today. Opening statements begins in the trial of james holmes, the man accused of opening fire in a colorado Movie Theater killing 12 people and wounding 70. Jacob rascon is in colorado this morning. Reporter good morning. Nearly three years later a jury will decide whether he was sane when he did it and if so whether or not he should be put to death. Hundreds of people were packed inside that Movie Theater in suburban aurora colorado when Authorities Say james holmes entered wearing Tactical Gear and started shooting. He killed 12 people and injured 70 before his rijammed. Police had to disarm his boobytrapped apartment. The defense admits holmes carried out the act but will try to argue he was insane at the time. The prosecution will try to convince the jury his elaborate planning of the attack prove. S he was sane. The trial expected to take several months. The horror of that day to be relived in pain staking detail. Jacob rascon in centennial colorado thank you. The defense begins its arguments today to save the life of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. 21yearold dzhokhar was indicted on 30 federal charges. The defense has maintained that tsarnaev was manipulated by his older brother tamerlan who was killed in a shootout with police. Tsarnaevs defense is expected to take up to two weeks. Some dramatic video this morning after l of flames engulfed a tanker truck near los angeles. The truck was hauling 8800 gallons of gas when it jackknifed and exploded. The driver managed to escape with minor bumps and bruises. But the accident shut down the freeway for hours in both directions. One of new yorks most wanted is finally off the streets this morning. A surveillance camera reported new york police capturing a coyote that has been roaming around the city. Police cornered the animal at an outdoor cafe after an hourlong pursuit. They tranquilized the female coyote and she was taken to the Animal Hospital for evaluation and will be released into the wild where she belongs. And a movie night that is out of this world. Its the new book called clinton cash that raises questions about Hillary Clinton, her familys foundation and its foreign donors might have influenced policy during clintons time as secretary of state. Peter schweitzer is the author and he joins us this morning. Good morning. Lets put it bluntly. Are you hoping this book and the issues you raise in it torpedo her candidacy . This is not really motivated to her candidacy. Ive done two previous books that looked at corruption and looked at people in both political parties. What we have with the clintons is a unique arrangement where you have a powerful you know, public figure whos involved with all these foreign entities. If a person believes every word in yo book wouldnt that be disqualifying with everything youre saying. You say people donate and get favorable treatment by the state department run by Hillary Clinton. Certainly the evidence i think is pretty shocking and could have that implication. But really the motivation is consistent with my previous work to look at the whole issue of corruption. Do you have any specific instance in which Hillary Clinton directly intervenes on behalf of donors to the Clinton Foundation . Its a great question. What we have is a pattern of behavior. I was not in any of these meetings. I cant look into Hillary Clintons mind. I certainly cant look at her emails. So the question becomes what is this pattern . And this pattern consistently shows that donors give large sums of money to the foundation where they pay bill clinton a lot for a speech. Theres a policy action thats taken to the benefit of that donor. In some of those instances hillary cl reversing course on previous policy position. Thats why my recommendation is somebody with subpoena power, with investigative capabilities should look at this behavior. You think this is something that could be criminally investigated. I think it should be. I dont go in with the assumption it was criminal but i think it warrants further investigation. If everything in your book were put before jurors lets say, in a court of law and we were told to assume it is true have you proven a quid pro quo . Well i dont think a quid pro quo needs to be the standard. If you look at senator macdonalds, menendez those were not kwid pro quos. Its do people believe the events were connected and there was some sort of pay to play arrangement . And thats a question i cant answer but i think investigators should look into. You started off mentioning youve done bipartisan investigations. But a lot of your critics say you are conservative and this is a right wing hit job. Are you really claiming to be neutral here . Im not claiming to be neutral. But if you look at my work i have gone aggressively after republicans. I did a book on Insider Trading by members of congress and went after several republicans. You also did a book called makers and takers whose sub title said conservatives even hug their children more than liberals. I say read the conclusion to the book where what im arguing is on the left and right theres a misuse of science research. It was a humorous title. Thats the reason it was put that way. Got to go. Two others are confirmed dead after a fierce storm with nearhurricaneforce winds tore into mobile bay on saturday swamping ten boats. With boaters still missing this morning, race participants who survived the storm know just how lucky they are to be alive. Im very fortunate. Very blessed. By the time we realized it was going to hit us it was on top of us. It was a matter of minutes. Reporter 40 boaters, some racers but mostly others just out sailing were rest keyed soon after the storm hit. He and his crew pulled three people from the water. All three clinging to a single life preserver. Even while the search goes on some are asking why there was no warning. They could have avoided this. Meteorologist from our affiliate says the storms blew up quickly. Winds were gusting at more than 70 miles per hour. The line of storms moved across mobile bay, racing ahead at almost 60 miles per hour. Boaters had no time to take cover. Everybody has technology in their pockets. All of the sailors out here were watching the weather, but we had no idea it was going to be that severe that fast. Otherwise i dont th. Reporter now, the coast guard says there will be an investigation of this incident but says right now everyone is just focused on search and rescue still hoping for survivors. Back to you guys. Was there an adjustment period for Family Members to kind of get used to this idea . I think there is still an adjustment and theres Family Therapy and were really close. You know i see reports that say, you know this one doesnt support him and this ones over here and my mom feels this way. Its all really so made up. We all really support him. Is it a hard adjustment . Yes. Is there things we have learned more recently and its an adjustment on how to deal with it. Its a daily process. Can you give me an example of what it takes to adjust. I mean even just the discussion. We have been talking to people from you know the glaad organization and just different organizations on what do we call him . Do we say him or her . How do you be respectful . Theres so many things you want to be supportive and respectful. Everything takes time. Bruce wants us to feel as comfortable as possible. And take everything in our own pace. And we love him for that and we respect him for that. You know until that transition is done weve learned that you do refer to him as him. But bruce has always been really really good at explaining everything to us even though its really new and these are new feelings not newer feelings for him, but for us to digest. Hes done a good job of walking us through it. Do you think he has any idea of the amount of attention hes going to get for some time . Paparazzi lenses grabbed a photo of him and hes splashed all over. Is he prepared for that . I think he is. He has waited almost 65 years to make this decision. Whether hes kept it to himself or not, hes lived with it. And i think when you are finally ready to be your true self then youre prepared for anything. Was there the family meeting . Was there one of those you almost imagine the family gathers in the living room. There were lots of family meetings. Bruce tells his story and theres embracing and hugging and tears and laughter. All of that . Every emotion you could possibly imagine. There is hundreds of family meetings. We still have them. Say what you want about us but we work out everything as a family and we have the best communication. And we are so in sync with each other. I love having so many siblings and such a supportive mom because each Family Member might be dealing with this in a different way. But we have each other to go through this experience with. And im really grateful for that. Its amazing. Bruce, i grew up watching him and admiring him as a decathlete you know an olympic champion. He was in the spotlight. But over the course of the show keeping up with the kardashians, he seemed to have wanted to remain more in the background. Now that spotlight is going to be turned right back on him again in a very intense way. And i think he is ready for the challenge and ready to help other peoples lives that might be going through the same things that hes going through. And thats something that hes really proud of. And something that he is really ready to take on. And im really proud o. What a fascinating thing. Its interesting to hear how they feel because they were on the front lines and knew what was going on. It was interesting when you said friday night all this time all the shows we did together on e and i had the story the whole time. Id like to hear from kris jenner. Shes been a little bit. Any time someone thats high profile, someone that gets attention talks about an forefront of the narrative in the country, then its a game changer. It gets people really talking about it. It opens their mind. And whats something they might have been really judgmental about before usually because of a lack of information now sit back and look at and go wow, im not so threatened about that after hearing about it in this way. Especially someone like bruce jenner we have known for decades play a piece of the interview and talk about it on the other side. This is who i am. Im not stuck in anybodys body. Its just who i am as a human being. My brain is much more female than it is male. Its hard for people to understand that. But thats what my soul is. I think it is hard for people even if they want to understand to figure out what is going on here. What do we know medically about what causes this . Well, physicians and particularly neurologists tell us that were born essentially all with the same brain and then however much testosterone is bombarded and absorbed by the brain then begins to determine what the gender identity is going to be. And i think here what hes saying is he has felt like he had much more of a female identity than what he was expressed in terms of his external genitalia and so all of this time hes felt one way but then been identified differently. And can you imagine the confusion . Can you imagine the frustration of feeling that all of this time. And now to say, okay that masquerade is over how freeing must that be. Can you just imagine. Well he seemed to literally have a weight off of his shoulders in this interview. Let me ask you about another item in the news. Dr. Oz who similar to you is a doctor who came to fame through oprah and has his own show. Hes been facing scrutiny. I wonder what you thought of it. If you think its fair. What you think about what hes going there u . I dont think its fair. I think language can get excitable and sha sort of thing. But i dont think it is fair. I think he is a solid physician. I think he largely gives good advice. And i think that sometimes you can get into a feeding frenzy and just way overreact to things. Hes a good guy. I think he gives good advice and i think hes very solid as a physician. Meantime your show is off to its new season. Youve got an interesting case today that youre going to be talking about. A man who was convicted of Second Degree child abuse but the circumstances arent necessarily what people might think. You know i always say you have to take any of these allegations seriously until theyre proven otherwise. And i always believe the child. I always believe it because you dont want to leave a child uninvestigated when an allegation is there. But when you investigate them sometimes you find out that things have been overreacted to. I think people are going to look at this and be horrified at what has happened in america here. Sometimes you get a badge heavy social worker. Sometimes you get people that overreact. Weve got a man in prison here and i think it is shocking that this has happened in america. I think when people look at this theyre going to be worried. And i dont want people to get afraid of taking their children to the emergency room. Because that can happen. Say im afraid to go because i could leave without my baby. He said when i talked to her about it, kim was the one that said you got to rock it girl. You got to accept it. She also said what i thought was fascinating was bruce said that kanye actually helped kim come to that idea and understanding that you can have everything in the world but if youre not living as your true self then theres the happiness in that. I thought it was interesting how many moments he did smile and there was just this relief about him. He told that kim story. I think that happened before she ever met kanye when she was much younger. He also talked about kylie and kendall having their computer in the room set up because they thought that each other had been swiping clothes and he said the only full length mirror in their home was in their room and they got a screen grab of him. But the family never talked about it. So according to him, kris jenner was aware from when they married because he at the time was taking hormones and they also talked about his other wives as well. Who are supportive. Very supportive. But it was a secret to us. But in their home it was they were aware. They were just not talking about it. Pretty interesting. Really intriguing. I find interesting and hats off to him because he sees this as a bigger than just himself. And he sees this as perhaps being a door opening for other transgenders to step through. And for people to talk about it. And we are. And it was an education. He talked about gender identification versus who you might date. Diane asked if you got married again, who would you marry . Are you gay. Yeah. So theres a lot more to come because other people have talked about it. If you looked at social media, we were in washington, d. C. And had some preevents. I rushed out because i wanted to see it live and track social media. But he definitely wants to see the positive response and it was overwhelming. Whats interesting i think, is that he has become in a sense this litmus test for bullying online. And people the people who are making jokes have been instantly shut down. Kris humphries Kim Kardashians husband before kanye tweeted, glad i got out of that family. Be you or whatever. People instantly went in on him. He said no no ive always been supportive. But the initial tweet seemed or implied that he was kind of being snarky. It was such a courageous thing for him to do to be now the most public and most famous face in the Transgender Community. And i thought it was also just so sad in a way watching the interviews to think he lived 65 years harboring this secret. When he talked about he was going to get his adams apple shaved and the paparazzi apparently became aware. Somebody leaked it out. He thought to himself i could just end this. I could just take a gun and make things easy. That speaks volumes to how much the Transgender Community they need somebody like this to take away the stigma. And he handled it with class. It happened when its supposed to happen. Absolutely. This weekend we mentioned a couple times we were at the white house Correspondents Dinner saturday night. They call it the nerd prom even though the celebrities there outnumber i dont know any nerds that look as cool as some of the people we ran into. Chrissy teigen. Nothing nerdy about her. Tara lapin ski and johnny wier. Best part of the night riding in the bus van with them. Hes the best. We love him. So both president obama and host snls Cecily Strong came to play and to win. A grilled romaine salad. Youre going to season it with authority. Yes with authority. Season that all right. Were going to put Olive Oil Salt and pepper on there. Toss it on the grill. Its that easy . Its that easy. How long . Youre going to get grill marks. Its going to take three or four minute zblps both sides . Depending on the heat of your grill.
