We have three beautiful kids here, and because of my kids, i would rather speak positive the message out to all the men. If youre in abusive situation, dont be scared of the guys on the Basketball Court or the barber shops. They are not going to help you. Safe horizon helped me out, and im a prime example of the good things that can happen if you seek help. Its often thought of as a female issue, was it harder to seek help and comradery among the victims. Some people make fun of you, they see you living in a shelter, and they are like what is this guy doing . Whats going on . Its just good to be able to take that step forward and to show my son and my kids that daddy can take charge and lead the family in a good way. Good for you. Rachel, the statistics show one in four women and one in seven men experience Domestic Violence. Why is this issue so prevalent . How do you combat it . We dont talk about it as much as we should. Thats why we are trying to raise awareness. As you said one in four women and one in seven men. Those numbers are staggering. The more we talk about it, the more opportunity the survivors get the help they need and we can work to eliminate Domestic Violence in our society. You did eventually leave your wife and dealt with struggles on the way. Walk us through that and how you overcame them. I had to resign from my position in health care. I did it because, you know, my kids were being neglected at one point because i worked overnight. I didnt need that no more. I had to take the step forward to do that. It was financially hard. I lost my home and practically everything. You name it, i love it. I walked into safe horizon with nothing in my hands, except my kids. Here you are with your chefs jacket on and food on the table. How did this come to be . Youre in a shelter, finding yourself and i said im going to do what i love, and cooking is what i love to do. It always brought me comfort through my separation. The shelter let me do a lot of cooking. I have today my grill marinated herb chicken and the curry steak. How did being at safe horizon help you develop this skill or did you always have the skill . Were you able to learn more . My grandmother, i was always the kid sitting on the floor in the kitchen, and i said let me just go ahead and cook for the residents at the shelter on mothers day, and the chicken was like the best on the menu, and when they had it, they came back, and they were like this is amazing. Some people it affects different parts of their body, internally, skin, bones, intestines, kidneys it affects everybody very differently and i think that the most important thing that for people to know especially from this day and this organization is to educate, it is a unknown disease and thing that the more they deen the more they educate they do and the more they educate people, people can learn more how broad of a spectrum the disease is. I was diagnosed earlier than most because my mother was aware enough to take me right to a rheumatologist that is not usually the first step in diagnosis. So i was diagnosed when i was 20t is definitely when i was 20. It is definitely more with young women and it affects a lot of women across the world. And it is amazing that the Alliance Research has done so much to educate. Theyve done so much in trial studies in research. And 100 of everything they raise goes to research.
