It started as an overnight traffic stop and ended with a suspect running into and killing another driver and then herself dying in the flames. For the first time in 12 years, the American Cancer Society is changing its Breast Cancer screening recommendations. It could just add to the confusion about when women should get mammograms. Cbs 2s dr. Max gomez sets the record straight. Reporter Sherry Forrest had her first mammogram at age 35 after she felt a lump in her breast. It was a false alarm. I have gone every year since. Reporter the American Cancer Society is now recommending women at average risk have yearly mammograms starting at age 45, not 40. Study author dr. Kevin offinger says the benefits outweigh the harm starting at 45. Between 40 and 44, Breast Cancer is less common. So the risk for a false positive, we thought that needs to be an informed decision between the woman and her healthcare provider. Reporter starting at 55, recommends screenings every two years. Thats closer to the u. S. Preventative Task Force Guidelines which recommends mammograms every two years starting at age 50. Some doctors say the guidelines are confusing and only take into account Breast Cancer deaths, not quality of life for survivors. The chief of breast screening at Lenox Hill Hospital recommends all women start yearly mammograms at age 40. Women who develop Breast Cancer in their 40s, early 40s, develop a very aggressive Breast Cancer and it spreads rapidly. Reporter sherry has had a few false positives in her early mammograms. Its scary when youre waiting to find out results. Reporter but she says she would rather have the anxiety than cancer. For the first time, the new guidelines support informed decisionmaking saying some women ages 40 to 45 should have the option to screen early and those over 55 to screen yearly in consultation with their doctors. So its not a hard and fast [ pause ] [ signal breakup ] just to clarify, i know a lot of women are probably at home saying, well, geez, how does this affect my insurance . I mean, will my insurance still, you know, cover the the screening . Reporter theres a possibility that the Insurance Companies wont cover it because its now a screening mammogram outside of the guidelines. The keywords there are screening mammogram because screening means you dont have any symptoms, any lump or anything. If you found a lump, that now automatically makes it a diagnostic mammogram and that should be covered by Health Insurance. They are also recommending changes in the regular office exams with a doctor, right . Thats right. The doctor or whats called a clinical breast exam where the doctor examines a breast for a lump. They have evaluated all of the data on that and they have looked at it and they said, you know what . Theres not enough data to support that it makes a difference for women having that so they recommend against the clinical breast exam for women. Something to definitely have a conversation with your doctor about, right . Reporter thats the important part. You can have that conversation so youre making that informed decision. Thank you. It wasnt a mammogram but a Facebook Post that led a wisconsin woman to find out she had Breast Cancer. Leah dietrich and susan norr are neighbors and friends. Leah already had Breast Cancer and beat it on the second anniversary of her diagnosis, she posted a thank you note for all the support she got during her treatment. When susan read the post, she made a lifesaving decision. Somehow, i read between the lines. It didnt say anywhere about doing a selfexam but thats what i got from that. That day, i did a selfexam and i hadnt done one for years. Maybe ever. And i felt a tumor and im like oh, my god oh just weeks later, susan was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. Susan and leah are now thankfully both cancerfree. Which, by the way, you can call reporter oh, of course. Plus, a full steam shower and a maze of closets. Outside, you find one of two guest cottages. This one a miniature version of the home. Reporter to live large on will cost you 5,195,000. And that does not come with the art because it doesnt come with the home. So [ laughter ] what do you say about the no doors in the bathroom. No. No. It depends who is living there, apparently. Even if im by myself i still shut the door. Its the thing. Its a thing. So do i. But its gorgeous. Tmi right about now. Lets check in on the temperatures. Thats been the story today milder than yesterday. And look at this. We couldnt find 70 degrees in new york city. Boy, we were close but excuse me, couldnt find it in manhattan. But we are right now sitting at 70 in brooklyn. Alana, thank you very much for that. And you can see a lot of sunshine out there over brooklyn. Sunshine throughout the area. The picture on our camera will look at that. Mostly sunny, 69. And 69 was your High Temperature today at 12 29 this afternoon. Youre six degrees above the average which is 63. That morning low while were you one degree cooler than you should be pretty much what you expect this time of the year. Not as cold as yesterday. Its going to be milder tomorrow morning. Overall through the workweek its calm overhead. This is going to be a slight chance for a shower on thursday, very slight. But basically its a calm weather pattern. The temperatures continue to be the story because they go up and down. So that roller coaster situation a real warmup wednesday is on tap for us. Remember that cold air . Wasnt that long ago like yesterday. Yesterday you marked out at 53. Sunday you were 50. 79 on thursday so nice stuff to look forward to. Skies will be beautiful today and overnight into your day tomorrow. That rain that you see here around the great lakes is moving very much west to east so it stays north of us. This rain right now thats in iowa moving in the direction of Wrigley Field. I have been timing it out. It could be three hours from now. If it moves a little quicker, sooner than that. Slower, a little later than that. It could affect the ballgame. In our area, again any of that rain stays north of our area. The next weathermaker would be this line right here. And its not a line of rain. Its a very slight chance for a shower on thursday later in the day. This is 9 p. M. I think thursday starts off okay. Then some more clouds come n but not too much rain. Yes, a rain chance, not too much. It is, however, a front. It pushes through and brings in cooler air for your day on friday so going over the numbers, nice and mild, for tomorrow at 73. Same deal on thursday at 71. But again we talk about that sort of meek and mild front coming through later on thursday. I do not see a lot of wet weather. I see some slight maybe 20 chance. A few more clouds later in the day thursday into thursday night but then it gets out of here and the cooler air will set up so friday youre 60 degrees. Plenty of you wont get out of the mid to upper 50s on friday. Sunshine is in place and then you sort of keep it in the 60s through the weekend and next week youre back to the 50s and we go up and down. A lot going on.
