Thats because we have a front thats been impacting the Northern Tier of the region through the afternoon. Right now in monticello its 55, in the city 77. Hamptons 54. Those southwest winds moving across water temperatures in the 40s means it is so much colder for that south shore of long island. Showers have impacting the Northern Area for the afternoon. We have seen a few spotty showers make their way through the city and points east. For the rest of the afternoon, a chance of showers. But really it is overnight the day tomorrow we have a chance for wet weather. Best bet is overnight through the earlymorning hours commute and it will be courtesy of this cold front. Many will actually die waiting for one. Cbs 2s dr. Max gomez is here now to tell us about a revolutionary new procedure that will dramatically increase the number of transplants. Reporter more than a third of the patients on that waiting list have harmful antibodies that would attack a kidney unless its a Perfect Match and even they they might still reject it. That makes finding a kidney almost impossible. But now researchers have found a way to transplant reporter he has a rejection flareup of a kidney transplant he got six year. He got one after less than a year but remembers how tough dialysis was. Four to six hours in the day with nausea and headaches. Reporter many never get one because they make antibodies that reject any organ. They are difficult to match because they have been exposed to someone elses tissue and there are threeways that happens, pregnancy, blood transfusion or transplant. Reporter but the director of the Langone Transplant Institute developed an approach by filtering them out of the blood. It lowers the antibody to a safe level to do the transplant so it wont immediately be rejected. Then some kind of magic happens and in most cases, the the patient goes on to have, you know, a normal longevity of their transplant. Reporter in a major study in todays new england journal of medicine, dr. Montgomery and collaborators at 22 transplant centers around the country showed that filtering these hardtotransplant recipients did well even with uncompatible kidneys. After eight years of incompatible transplant versus the only other option which is staying on the decease donor list, you doubled your survival rate dramatic. Reporter because the blood filtering can take up to two weeks, this desensitization is only useful for living donors, not deceased donors where you may only have hours to harvest viable organs. Even so, though, it could dramatically improve the number of kidney transplants especially for those tough to find and tough to match patients. Thank you. Port Authority Police arrest a man they say was cheating tolls at the George Washington bridge. Police say the 41yearold truck driver from yonkers had a fishing line tied to his license play. But an officer stopped him last night after noticing the police say when the officer checked the truck he found the fishing line. He also found the trucks rear plate bent upwards to avoid security cameras. The arrest of a man accused of stabbing two joggers at a brooklyn park, investigators say that he is also a suspect in the stabbing of a hasidic man in Crown Heights. Reporter kristine, this serial slashing suspect is a 26yearold homeless man who allegedly attacked two male joggers in Prospect Park last night. Then here today at the 70th Police Precinct he was being questioned and detectives linked him to that Crown Heights attack as well last month. Keny rochelin lives in manhattan. He is charged with assault and robbery in the knife attacks on two joggers inside Prospect Park at about 11 30 last night. One victim was stabbed in the stomach without warning and other got cut on the hands fighting off the suspect. Both of them are expected to be okay. Now be while they were questioning him in those attacks, detectives thought rochelin looked like the suspect who was seen on Surveillance Video after the february 10 stabbing of 25 yearold Yehuda Brickman on empire boulevard in Crown Heights. The people are given this 14 million in funds these projects the reason we are doing it is the real heroes are the teachers who are too often themselves spending projects.
