For the month of january transit crime was up more than 36 compared to last year. If you put yourself in a be a victim there are people out there who will take advantage. It would run along a 16mile corridor from astoria to sunset park and would avoid conflict with general traffic. The route would shave about 18 minutes off a commuters typical week day trip compared to current transit options. Neighborhoods like dumbo have been booming with development but transportation has not caught up. The street car fare would be a single ride metro card. This is one proposal the mayor would discuss in tonights state of the city address. We reported yesterday another part of his speech would include a new option for paying for metered parking spots a cell phone app thats expected to roll out city wide by the end of this year. The street car system is still we are told work would not even begin construction until 2019 or 2020. Mary because of that the Police Commissioner says that if you fall asleep on a subway train expect a wake up call from Police Officers. Overall crime is down 10 in the city but on transit on the subway trains and buses crime has spiked 36 compared to january of last year. So commissioner bratton says half of the victims in all transit crimes were people who were sleeping on the subway. He says sleeping makes you vulnerable and an easy target so officers have been ordered to wake up napping passengers. This new Initiative Getting mixed reaction from strap hangers. If you put yourself in a position where you are going to be a victim there are people out there who will take advantage. There should be either more surveillance or maybe more cops in the trains. Well the commissioner says they will be doing just that having additional officers inside and riding some of those subway trains. Mayor diblazio is set to unvail a massive street car project expected to cost billions. Andrea grymes has a preview of the proposal. Andrea . Chris and mary the city says this is transformative. Mayor diblazio will be detailing this plan as you mentioned tonight in the state of the city address to benefit neighborhoods like where we are standing now in dumbo brooklyn. Lets show you renderings of what the connector street car would look like running along a 16mile corridor from astoria to sunset park and save commuters on average 18 minutes during a typical week day ride. You can hear the train over head right now but in neighborhoods like where we are standing there are not many subway options. Any one over head is on the bridge. The street car system would cause 2. 5 billion but many people who live in these i think its an outstanding idea because transportation north and south of brooklyn is hard and from here to get to williamsburg or green point is really difficult let alone getting further into brooklyn or queens so im all in favor. I think its great. The 2. 5 billion price tag for the street car system is still cheaper than for example phase one of the Second Avenue subway project on the east side which is over 4 billion. A transformer fire spreads to a dozen vehicles at a new jersey auto auction site. Cars burp out of control in fairfield yesterday. The transformer fire caused wires to fall. Firefighters had to watch as the flame spread to other cars no one was hurt. A Police Precinct will be getting updates digs thanks to a new construction project for police relations. The building was constructed back in the early 1920s but renderings have been released for a new nearly 70 Million Building in st. A cab driver is sharing his story. The 71yearold kabi says he picked the men up outside a restaurant and realized it was a jail break. The escapees called him from a newspaper and took him to hotels got him into a physical fight over whether to shoot him or not.
