And this is why cambridge based Food Rescue Organization fran Van Overbeeke freeway has launched a new initiative for pine street inn. To bring fresh healthy food directly from the field to the shelter. To tell us more about how food for free and pine street inn are working together to provide better new tryings for the homeless we have invited Sasha Purpura, executive food for free and pine street inn executive chef frank, fran Van Overbeeke. Welcome to urban update. Thanks for coming in. Sasha. Let me start with you. Talk to me about the concept for this new mission, the field to shelter. How did this come about for the pine street inn and food for free . Weve been working with pine street inn for five years now bringing them primarily rescued food and purchased food. But we have had this field, we years. And we grow organic food on that and we distributed it to the agencies that we serve. We really use it as a tool to engage volunteers. So if our five years anniversary with the pine street inn we said what can we do to acknowledge this, and the idea came up that we could target the crops we were growing specifically for a single allegation. So instead of just randomly growing food and distributing it out we can really bring people connection to what theyre serving and we could explicitly plan specific crops. Frank you are tasked with creating 2,000 meals a day for shelter guests. What are some of the examples of meals you whip up . We kind of cook everything and everything. The old days of it will military style food in a she woulderer items to serve so they have an ean enjoyable meal. And with the produce that you get from food for free, how does that help out that really adds to what were doing. Were usually using frozen or what we can glean from anyone else. Food for free is bringing us Fresh Produce and we can incorporate that into the menu and its great because it changero harvested. So earlier in the summer were getting lots of tomatoes which meant we were doing really great fresh vegetable salads. Now were seeing things like cabbage and kale, so winter squashes as well are coming in. So for instance today we were taking winter squash and mixing in a little brown sugar and doing that sweet glaze thanksgiving style. So its great. We never know what were going too to whip something up. What kind of reaction are you getting from your shelter guests . Its great. The guests like i said theyre used to getting whatever we we n get at audients price. So its immediately noticeable for them. Theyre looking at all these fantastic heirloom totals or stirfry of minged vegetables. Something along those license thats obviously we were cutting through watermelons today that you could smell through the entire kitchen and that only happens with really Fresh Produce. Sasha, food for free volunteers planted seeds to grow specific produce requested by pine street inn from your farm space your very own farm space. Are you going to be doing this for other organizations in the future . This is the first year that we targeted it. We have a quarter acre in 25 years and this is the first year that we have selected a Single Agency to receive the food. We havent considered, do we now start to go to different agencies, do we continue the partnership with the pine street inn. One of the nice things about the pine street inn is they have such a great needled franks make 2,000 meals a day. Its a place that everyones heard of so for the volunteers to ups where theyre food is going they have the ability to go in inn. So for the next 25 years, who knows . Maybe we stick with them. Frank, talk to me about how the students at the pine street inns Culinary Training Program have helped that prepare these meals. The program is great. So as i was saying before we would receive food from food for free we would have to use say frozen vegetables. Theres not a lot you can do with it. When we receive the fresh allows us to instruct our trainees on different techniques on how to slice the product, how the cook the product. How to be a little bit creative. Well see what do you think guys think we can do with this . What did your mom used to do with this . And it allows us to explore techniques with them that they wouldnt have other side been expose to. Sasha last year food for free rescued more than 1. 7 millions pounds of food which translated into meals million meals. 1. 3 million meals correct. Big meals. Were getting close to holiday season. How can individuals and families help in this effort . 40 percent of the food we grow doesnt get eaten which is shocking and unbelievable when one in nine people in masting with food security. I think theres a lot people can do individually to watch what theyre purchasing to take food and make something with your al fridge cleaning day where we just sort of make something of whatevers left. But on a more larger scale i think really putting pressure on the institutions whether its the stock market you shop on the radar a university and asking these agencies what are you doing with your plus food because there are organizations that would collect that food and take to it places like the pine street inn. So if if you have a child until school or if youre in school yourself go happening, because there is surplus food. When youre serving at scale there is always surplus food. Food that needs to be rescued. Frank, talk to me about i guess the importance of Good Nutrition this demographic that youre serving, homeless people. Youre talking about a very at risk group of people. These are folks that are going to spends a great deal of the summer in the difficult situations. Because theyre suffering from Health Issues that may have contributedded to how they ended up being home less and in the past, the homeless shelters would use bot line as their Decision Maker as to what were feeding folks. Whatever we can the most food we can get for the least amount of money so we can get as much food boo these people as possible and thats not really the right away to go about it. They need food thats actually nutritious. They dont need loads of they need fresh fruit and whole greens. These folks are suffering from diabetes or those sorteds of Health Issues and were not benefiting them if we just shove lots of food in tv what kind of food were they eating before . You would carve them up a built the idea is lets just get a lot of food into them, so a lot of rice and mash potatoes and whatever donated bread would bread thats examining in is very sugary food. But its not good for them and were not helping them. Is there anything the general public can do to snelling. Those are things to take into consideration. We love cereal and we love bread and it sounds odd to ask to be picky but we would like whole grain cereals and whole grain breads. That sort of thing. People have a nutritional mentality when theyre sending stuff to us that would be great. And again youre a big food rescuer so anyone out there with left over food you would like to hear from them. Absolutely. And listening to frank i will say i think we almost probably continue this partnership with them. Okay, Sasha Purpura and chef frank thank you for coming in. Helping bostons new immigrants learn english in an effort to start their way toward the american dream. Ill have the information here every single day the cof the city is a minority majority city where more than 53 percent of all of its residents are now nonwhite. Many of these newcomers to the city come here speaking another language and most if not all make learning english a priority. But they need assistance and thats where english for new a major role until helping to close the proverbial language barrier. Founded in 2001, the program has become a critical tool for immigrant families toll obtain educational and economic success in massachusetts. The tell us more about english for new bostonians, weve invited its executive director claudia green. With us jimmy of the largest pan asian restaurant group. Jimmy is an Award Recipient of tomorrow mornings english for new bostonians breakfast and he offers an esol program for these employees. And welcome to urban update. Thanks for coming in fact esol is for English Speaking for speakers of other languages. Okay. About english for new bostonians. English for new bostonians helps make english classes for immigrants to the city, makes those classes possible. So we support Community Organizations from very small Grassroots Community based organizations to large Human Service multiservice organizations to provide english classes for limited English Speakers in the city. And so we support those programs, we actually raise money from the city of boston and from private foundations from individual donors and cormses and we pass that through to those organizations toll run english classes. Daytime, evening, weekend, whenever people can get there. And we also provide a lot of support, training Technical Assistance to those organizations, the teachers to make them the highest quality possible. And we also run a statewide English Works Campaign improve the system statewide of offering this high quality english language opportunities and thats where how we connect with employers. We try to reach out to businesses to try to that have limited English Speaking employees to try to offer them resources and help them to be able to offer english classes to their lows. Jimmy liang youre a successful entrepreneur. Beginning at age 19 youve begun vo an employer of many people who really do benefit from the opportunities to learn english. You employ many immigrants. Talk to me about the importance of learning english for these new bostonians. I believe its a priority. My family is a family of immigrants and i myself have gone through the same process as a lot of these immigrants have going through right now. Sole translator for my family and i knew that even with me translating for my family it made a huge impact on the quality of life for the rest of my family members. As a little boy i would go to the street to the neighborhood pharmacy with any grandfather and pay bills. But even something as simple as paying bills you need to be able the speak the language. I was also the kid that took some of my relatives as soon as they came here to take them to the ci again to help them translate and acquire a Social Security card. A green card and so forth. So i believe through personal experience, i believe that a lot of new imgrants could definitely benefit from this. So you were the family translator then. I was. Claudia, jimmys going to be the recipient of tomorrows breakfast. Talk to me about tomorrow tomorrow morning we do an events each year called raising our voice, recognizing esl leadership in the business multiple and in preparation for this event we actually run a staidwide nomination process and we ask folks around the state to let us know which employers are supporting english classes for their employees. And we get lots of nominations from around the state and so Jp Fuji Group is onef receiving the award. So theyre business and Labor Management partnerships so. And were so excites the goal of this event is to really let other businesses know that this is a great opportunity and that you know, if businesses like jp fuji can do it they can do it too, and there are Resources Available. Were also recognizing several agentings of change, people who are really making a difference so the agents of change, and then we have a rising Start Student award. Were also releasing a couple new reports about english language needs in the workforce. Now, jimmy when folks come here to boston, i assume most of them want the learn the lamming. I mean, learning that language thats whats going to give you the quickest boost in this country, is unfortunately the First Priority for a lot of new immigrants is to actually try to make a couple bucks and put food on the table and shelter over their heads. And so for the fortunate ones that dont have to foundation on that yes, they could probably go and seek out these classes. But for a lot of folks with those concerns and also raising a family, the time that they have to try to learn english is a little tough. Like my parents, it was a little claudia, i would imagine as the demographics continue to change here and immigrants continue to come in i guess the need toll d opportunities to learn english are just growing leaps and bounds, i would imagine. That is true. Its been true since we started in 2001 and its true today. Our programs serve about 1200 people across the city. Each year, which is about a third to a quarter of all those who the city of boston. But theres probably another you know, seven, 8,000 who are in need of classes and all together there are probably close to 60,000 people who have limited english skills in the city of boston. So the need is great. Statewide we serve only about five percent of the people who need english classes. So our job is ongoing. Leadership and opportunities and thats what we really recognize at that benefits. Okay. Jimmy, by the way congratulations on the award tomorrow. I guess must be a big honor. Anyone you want to thank . Absolutely. First of all my cousin tony. Big shout tout him. And rob shepherd the program director, one of the teachers. And of course claudia. Thank you very much and thank you for having me mere. Claudia how can anyone else get involved in their so actually the classes that Jp Fuji Group runs in their case with the asian resources, those are funded by the department of ed. Consolidate there are Resources Available and also through the states workforce training funds, there are resource available to offer these classes. So either on the labor side or on the education side. And if businesses are interested for those who havent had the pleasure of visiting one of your restaurants, how old you describe the experience . Clean, great food, great service. All right. Jimmy liang and claudia green thank you both for coming in. And keep up the good work for teaching everyone to speak english. Our next guest is frequently being interviewed and quoted on television and newspapers and websites for his honest opinions about the Real Estate Market. In this every changing market hes always happy to share his perspective with buyers and sellers so they can make sounds decisionses for the longterm. His fullterm Lamacchia Realty and monthly updates. Hes been on urban update before with some bold predictions to give our viewers an update, we now welcome back Anthony Lamacchia of Lamacchia Realty. Anthony welcome back the urban update. Thank you very having me. Were going to get toilet you gave us some bold predictions earlier this year. Lets review and see how you did. So far were on track. I said that that would be the biggest year since 05. And it we came up just short last year, about 4,000 home sales short. But this year were 7,000 home sales ahead of last year. So i think this will definitely be it will biggest year since 05 which is the biggest year in 11 years is no joke. Thats quite a statistic. And im talking for overall home sales. Amount of homes sold. Youve also got sol interesting trends showing up in your mid year housing report. Take a look at those sure. So what i talked about on that was as of june 30, home sales were up 21 percent but home prices were only up three percent. Keep in mind this is all of massachusetts so some people who hear that in the boston area might say three percent, thats not true. It actually is true because were talking about all of massachusetts. Every year there are variables, whether its the weather or r, affected the market this year . This year it was an unusually and i loved it. I bet you did too. A mild winter. It was. What didnt . When i was in here with you beginning of last year i was in just after the worst winter we had ever had and in 15 it was the slowest start ever. This year was one of the earliest starts ever. So theres always something in this business. Now, one thing thats does that have any impact on especially when its as crazy as this one. Does it have any impact on real estate . Thats debatable. No one intended. I think generally speaking it doesnt have a direct impact but ill tell you this. On the higher end it does. I have friend that in multimillion dollar homes right outside of wall street and things like that and they tell me that it does have but the every day home buyer and seller it doesnt have an impac what about the fall . Is it still a good time to buy . Its a great time to buy. Its the best time all year. I think we have some stats on that we can put up on that, because you have some reasons why people should buy i guess going exactly. We put op a progress last week and what i said is inventory is which is the same as the last three falls. Interest rates are very good. Now, thats something thats especially good this year. The third thing is sellers who have on the market now and who want to sell before winter tends to be a bit more motivated because they dont usually want to carry the home through the winter. So buyers can usually strike a theres more choices and that awes frustrates buyers in the late winter and early spring when theres not a lot of inventory. Now there is an inventory of homes for sale. Theres not a ton. But theres more than there was in the spring and buyers should get out and take advantage of that. People are always trying the put their house on the market like in the spring. Thats the time to do it. That seems to be the pattern. Youre right about that. And i always say, and i can have many times. The best time to put your home on the market is late winter. Fall is not the best time to sell truthfully but its a better time to buy. So you know, when every else is out buying homes its not the best time to buy and thats the spring. When less people are out buying homes in the fall thats the time to be out. Its the old Warren Buffett theory. When everyone else is scared greedy. What do you expect for the rest of the year until strong finish . Right now its slow. Its been slow for about three weeks. Im not going to sit here and say its terribly slow but it definitely is slow. Typically what happens in late october is the market picks up and the reason that happens is those are the people who say gee if we want the buy a home this year we better move it. So usually theres a surge in i see no reason why that wont hawaii and as i said we will beat the last 11 years of home sales. We will be close to 90,000 home sales here in massachusetts in 2016 and thats significant. Weve got ge coming to boston and other companys as well. How does that impact the Real Estate Market . It really can only help. When you look at ge, the first report saier executives moving here and 4,000 people in their socalled ecosystem moving here, some of them coming closer to my area, wolverine. Theres a lot of people coming to boston and its wonderful for real estate. If youre a buyer that can add to the competition. Any other tips for buyers should buy now and i dont just a say that sometimes people think im being a sales person. If you asked me in the spring i would say sorry fall is a better time to buy. If you need to sell, be realistic. Accept the fact youre not going to be able to sell probably for as much right now as you could have during the spring. But you need to accept that and be realistic and not reach because thats part of what happens. When the m start reaching for more and when the market slows they cant believer it.
