And welcome three familiar faces back for another term. First the incumbents. Mayor frank cownie. And Council Members Chris Coleman and joe gatto were all reelected. Cownie took 80percent of the vote in his race. Coleman took 73 percent. Gatto ran unopposed. For the first time in more than a decade there will be a new face representing ward two in northeast deses moines. Linda westergaard beat marty mauk by just two hundred votes. Shell replace bob mahaffey who chose not to run for reelection. Westergaard is a realtor and served as president of the Douglas Acres Neighborhood Association for sixteen years. She also founded the Northeast Neighbors and friends group. She says that experience will help her in her new position. One of her Top Priorities is to invest new amenities in neighborhoods that will attract families. Neighborhoods are very important theyre one of my Top Priorities as i enter the next four years, is to keep our neighbors in the neighborhood. We want people to come to ward 2, and see what a great place it is to work, and live, and play. 01 19 westergaard also says she wants to address the redevelopment of the eastgate property. At east euclid avenue and east 14th street. Westergaard says seeing that project move forward will spur growth for the entire east side of town. Shes also interested in building a new firehouse on the northeast side to address longer response times. The city did a study a few months ago, and it came back that the response times for some areas in the northeast part of des moines are longer than wed like them to be. So yes, that will be a priority of mine. To work with the fire chief and with the city council to make sure that we can keep everyone safe. 01 24 westergaard has spent her entire life in ward 2. She was born and raised on the northeast side of des moines, and graduated from north high school. There was a shakeup on the Knoxville City Council last night. And it could be due to that controversial memorial in town. Earlier this year Carolyn Formanek and April Verwers voted to remove this memorial from a city park after a group threatened legal action. The group claimed the memorials religious symbols didnt belong on public property. Last night both formanek and verwers were voted off the council. Just yesterday the memorial was removed from the city park. It is being relocated to private property. The family of Ryan Bolinger is suing the city of des moines. Des Moines Police officer Vanessa Miller shot and killed bolinger. Who was unarmed. In june. Miller claimed she feared for her life when bolinger walked up to her car following a chase. So she shot him through the window of her squad car. A grand jury and an internal Police Investigation cleared miller. But the lawsuit. Filed today in federal court. Claims miller was negligent and didnt receive proper training. Were learning more about that outbreak of Food Poisoning at Roosevelt High School in des moines. But we still dont know exactly how dozens of people were sickened. The Polk County Department of Public Health says 58 teachers and Staff Members were sickened at the school on wednesday october 21st. The next day the school was shut down because so many Staff Members had fallen ill. Health Officials Say the sickness was caused by a bacteria present in meat served at a potluck at the school. However cant say whether the outbreak was caused by improper cooking or improper storage of cooked food. No one was severely sickened by the bacteria. Theres a new top teacher in the state of iowa. Today governor branstad made the announcement at fairfield high school. This years honoree is 57year old scott slechta. Hes taught english at fairfield since 1984. He recently transitioned into a mentor specialist role within the school district. The Teacher Mentoring Program is one of the cornerstones of the governors education reform program. Slechta will now spend the next year serving as a mentor to teachers around the state. There will soon be a hole in the corning community. This week the Iowa National guard announced it will close its armory there. we cant say enough for the 168 th infantry. And what theyve done, not only for our community, for our country and their service. the Iowa National guard announced it would be closing the facility in corning in 2016, moving 80 soldiers to camp dodge in johnston. Now the Adams Community Economic Development corporation is looking to find a new owner for the building, which was built in 1993. definitely we look at it as an opportunity, its a great facility, theres plenty of land there, were looking at it to grow our economy, and get it on the tax rolls. Corning would like to add more manufacturing jobs. Officials hope to attract an existing Company Looking for a base in their region to locate in the armory building. Nats of train whistle after 8 years of planning the city of creston is about ready to start quiet zones for trains downtown. The city has issued notice that on november 16th trains will not be blowing horns at elm street and new york avenue crossings. They have provided everything from shade and Flood Control to valuable lumber for furniture.
