months of his life methodically planning his own suicide after managers started looking into the department's finances. it all came to an end in september. officer gliniewicz found dead in an isolated area. the only description, a possible suspect, came from his own radio call for back-up. first for information, then for back-up. he said he was chasing two men -- i should say three men total. two white, one black. despite massive manhunt that cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to taxpayers, investigators never tracked down those men. that's because they did not exist. the fox lake community mourned officer gliniewicz' death. known affectionately as g.i. joe. store owners plasters the pictures on the windows. the town flew flags at half-staff to honor him. thousands upon thousands gathered to honor him. detectives noted today, that part of lieutenant joe glinl wits' job was to train cops.

search in an approximately 2-square-mile perimeter area, a search that had over 400 police officers, had over 45 k-9 units and approximately 6 aircraft, it was extensively searched, that grid area. so after 14 hours, after not locating the suspects, the perimeter was released. what that means today and last night is the lake county sheriff's office, the illinois state police are providing marked squad cars for saturation controls here in fox lake for the fox lake police department to beef up police presence. that's for two reasons. we're looking for suspicious activity, we're looking for the offend offenders and we want the fox lake community to know we're out here, they're safe and we're keeping an eye on them as well. we want them to be safe and police presence is extremely important, especially with the uncertainty of the residents and the worries that are going on. the schools in the area today
the fox lake community remains on edge. joining me now on the phone is a long-time resident of fox lake. she was out walking her dog yesterday when police told her she needed to leave her subdivision so they could conduct a search. thank you so much for being with me this morning. >> good morning. how are you? i want to start off by saying my k condolences to the police department and his family. he will be deeply missed. yesterday when i was at my residence, i was walking my dog. i was approached by two police officers telling me that i need to go to my home or get in my vehicle and leave, that there was a shooting two minutes away from my house and that they're unable to find the suspects and that there is a possible motive that they were hiding in our forest preserve behind our house. so i ended up leaving and was
border. the facts that they are unsure is whether they are in a vehicle would imply they are probably on foot finding some kind of place to hide. could be a home. maybe they separated. we really don't know. and hopefully they will be able to to get as much information from the first suspect. >> we should note here again, representative barbara wheeler, state representative there in illinois, represents the area that includes fox lake. reporting right now that one of the suspects is in custody. nbc news has not been able to independently confirm that. we're working to confirm that right now. we also expect we may get more information on that when the news conference that you see at the bottom right on your screen there, there is a news conference set to start any moment now. when that starts, of course, we will bring that to you live. barbara, how are folks on the ground reacting there? >> the fox lake community is a
breaking news out of illinois, close to chicago, a bedroom community, a suburb of chicago is right now effectively under a shelter in place order. residents of the fox lake community are being asked by police to stay inside as they conduct a massive manhunt looking for three male suspects after a police officer was shot in this community. we are being told that the officer is injured but we're not being told the extent of the officer's injuries at this time. we are being told that the police are on a manhunt for two white males and one black male. those are the suspects, police are reporting, that those suspects are armed. clearly they are dangerous as is evidenced by the request a few moments ago, the police asking residents of that community to stay inside and call 911 if they
