Leon alison, spring brings birds chirping and that signature smell of mulch. In the district, the buzz of dirt bikes. Today, the d. C. Bureau chief sam ford was out there and heard from police and local leaders about a push to stop the bikes that are on the streets illegally. Sam is live in southeast and hes got video that youll see only here on 7. Sam . Sam leon were at 21st and alabama avenue southeast where a young woman was hit by a dirt bike six months ago here and she stood here in the crosswalk. Yesterday in this neighborhood, police say they confiscated four of those dirt bikes by catching them at gas stations. It is a cat and mouse situation. Earlier this month, in southeast, we saw this. Helicopter in the sky. Police after a dirt bike on the ground. When the road ended, the bike kept going into the wooded area. The cruiser had to turn. Biker did a uturn around a few trees and was headed back towards us. Police later told us that he got away. As residents see in these you tube videos illegal bikers and a. T. V. Riders seemingly take over the streets at will. Talk about yesterday in the street and its crazy. Get hit. Seem like the police dont know what to do. Sam residents are demanding something be done. In september, the 2100 block of alabama southeast, a 23yearold woman in the crosswalk was severely hurt, injured by a dirt biker who fled and is still at large. Community leaders admit enforcement is a problem. We dont want the Police Chasing after them where they can cause an accident to hurt someone else. But at the same token, the police have to find a way to resolve this. Sam yesterday, police swarmed gas stations at alabama and naylor southeast. Police managed to confiscate one bike here three others in other parts of southeast yesterday. There are so many bikes and a. T. V. S you can find them as we did today chained together under a tarp. And, of course, thats the crosswalk where the young woman was hit. Her mother said today that they would not do an interview with us. But theyre disappointed that the police have so far not made an arrest in their case. One Police Official admitted to me today that they are more interested in confiscating the bikes than in making arrests because the penalties are not that strong and some of the people dont even have drivers licenses to take away from them in the case of in the way of punishment. We may see a snow shower or flurry in parts through the rush hour. I dont think theyll have an impact. So tonight, becoming cloudy late with a few flurries before sunrise. But fans can expect to see more than new players at the park two weeks from today. Rebecca cooper is live at nats park with a look at one new feature required for anybody wanting to get inside there. Rebecca . Rebecca well leon you and alison know its always worth it for a good game but youll have to plan more time to get inside nationals stadium. Not just traffic. Not just parking. But now these, youre going to have to get through metal detectors. The message today from Nationals Park plan for some good baseball this season but also plan to come even earlier. Every fan in the nation wanting to come inside the bought park is now required by Major League Baseball to pass through mangnometers. People have busy schedules but we want to encourage people to get here early. Rebecca todays demonstration came courtesy of Washington Nationals interns. Ballparks know better than expect fans to be this orderly. They want anyone to come to games to come as early as 2 1 2 hour gate opening or at least an hour before opening pitch. To get through the magnameters theres a list of allowed items and items not allowed. A bag this size has to fit inside the blue box and you cant bring in any liquids except for a one liter water bottle or an empty cup. Weapons are also still on the banned list, of course. Officials say that includes obvious items like guns. But also items like full sized baseball bats and scissors. No one knows exactly what the final price tag will be for all of this security. Since it was a rush to simply get it done before opening day. We started this project immediately after after the winter classic ended and literally, the concrete is still drawing in some locations. Rebecca nationals Officials Say they will not be passing along the cost of these mlb required metal detectors to the fans but, of course, if you get to the ballpark early that gives you all the more time to shop and spend money. Reporting live from nationals stadium, rebecca cooper, abc 7 news. Leon nfl owners voted to end the practice of blacking out broadcasts for some games today. But only temporarily. The league is suspending the policy for one year and theyre doing this as an experiment. Traditionally, fans couldnt watch games in cities where teams didnt sell a certain number of tickets but teams sold that minimum number for every game last year and all but two games the year before. So well see how things play out this year. Alison ok, it looks like baseball weather when you look outside. It has got a chill in the air today. Doug the way it looks in a general outlook for opening week in early april is the eastern third of the country is going to stay northeast part of the country will stay cooler than average and the southeast will be pretty much what it is and yet, you know, out past ohio kentucky and indiana, the rest of the country will be above average temperatures. Well feel the warmth of spring and summer. Leon eventually. Doug one day preview coming thursday. This is from woodbridge in Prince William county during t day. Beautiful sunrise and few clouds and they pushed off to the south and east during the day. Clear across the area and well look to the west for the next batch of clouds to move in tonight ahead of a little weather disturbance. 44 degrees right now in brooklyn spring West Virginia. 43 in barnsville. 48 degrees at Nationals Park. We just heard from rebecca there. Lows this morning in the 20s and 30s. So a chilly morning and chilly night tonight. Well get down to the upper 20s to low 30s. At the moment, we stay close to 50 in the area. 50 officially at Reagan National and eight degrees below the normal High Temperature for this date. Sky will give away to the clouds and some snow showers, passing flurries are all possible across the area through 9 00 10 00 in the morning. I think any moisture thats still left from this disturbance will come as a sprinkle or shower. Warm air will win the day. It will be for one day but already starting a little sign of it. 70 degrees in knoxville. 69 in bristol, kentucky and tennessee right now and all that is going to move through our area on thursday. So we got a couple of changes first. This little upper air disturbance bringing the clouds possible with snow flurries and snow showers. That will get out the door and some of this warmer air will start to push northward. Leading edge of the warm front, 34 in indianapolis and 73 in nashville. Big difference in the air masses there. So the warm front ahead of this all will move in our direction and bring showers here wednesday and then the doors will open to increasing southwesterly winds and beneficiaries will see temperatures in the 70s but its a one day deal for thursday. Its looking good. Futurecast gives High Pressure tomorrow moving overhead. Warm front will get closer and bring clouds back in by wednesday evening and a couple of passing showers as we get through wednesday and then ahead of this cold front, well have this window on thursday window of opportunity to push temperatures into the lower 70s and the front actually passes we got the possibility of showers and maybe even a spring thunderstorm as we get through the day on thursday. So lots of things to watch this week. But in general terms its going to stay cooler than average. This little map here is an accumulated computer prediction of what the maximum snowfall may be from this little disturbance. Generally, the most for the district area may be a 10th of an most. Only place well get anything of measure is the highest elevations of the mountains. Heres a quick look at the forecast, flurries. Skies will brighten to 47 with afternoon sunshine and then as we head through the next seven days, 30 chance of rain. Increasing late in the day with a warm front and then partly sunny.
