Back in maine this morning, but not home yet. And there is so much confusion now how to handle those people battling ebola. The cdc has one set of rules and the military and states going further. We will sort through it. But right to the developing story out of hawaii. The red hot lava threatening to wipe out a town on the big island. The flow is closing in on homes and key roads. And rob marciano was just on the front lines in pahoa, hawaii. Look at the lava flow. It was breaking out from crusted over. This is blistering hot, taking up this tree. Unimaginable if this was coming through your neighborhood. Blistering hot and unstoppable. This morning, residents fleeing the scenic town of pahoa, hawaii, powerless to stop the river of lava creeping towards their homes. We dont know what were going to do. Its really scary. Reporter this is the aerial view as the lava burns through the land. The trail of lava from the kilauea volcano, its traveled 12 miles since june. Speeding up erratically. And its now fanned out, covering more ground. And follow the steepest route, pahoa is right there in the literal hot zone. Officials say there is no way to stop the lava, but theyre working to protect power pole from burning and create detours if the main road is hit and cutting off access to thousands. Structures can catch fire being near the 2,000 degree hot lava. Its not the first time the island was hit by one of the most active volcanos. In the 90s, more than 200 homes were destroyed. Now residents are bracing for the worst hoping its not a repeat of the past. The homes threatened are just a few miles downstream from us. And its imminent they are likely to go up like this tree is. Back to you. We have to get out of here. I bet you do. The latest on the ebola scare. Nurse kaci hickox back in maine, released in new jersey after showing no symptoms of the deadly disease. And the cdc issuing new guidelines for treating health care workers. Lindsey davis is in fort kent. Good morning. Reporter thats right. Kaci hickox back in her home state, and despite twice testing negative for ebola, she will be required to be quarantined for roughly another 17 days and actively monitored by health officials. This morning, kaci hickox is back in maine where she can finally swap the tent she was quarantined in in a new jersey hospital parking lot for her own bed. The nurse who says she was treated like a criminal when she returned to the u. S. After treating ebola patients in sierra leone leaving the hospital in an suv provided by the state of new jersey. Governor Chris Christie insisting the release not a change in the policy. I did not reverse the decision. Why do you say that . If she was ill, she would have to say. Reporter and the lawyer talking to his client through a plastic window in the tent with no heating, no shower and a box far toilet. Telling abc news overnight she may still sue the state of new jersey. Her civil rights were violated. In a minimum, she can bring an action for damages. But i think her goal is to try to revise the current policies with regard to mandatory quarantine. Reporter she will now continue her quarantine at an undloezed location. Maine among nine states that announced some type of quarantine above and beyond federal guidelines. In fact the cdc revised guidelines overnight to eliminate the word quarantine although. Recommending restricted travel and public activity for those at risk and active monitoring by Public Health officials. An organization not following the cdc gooidlines, the u. S. Army, placing a twostar general and a dozen soldiers in isolation in really after they returned from liberia. The army says they will remain there for 21 days despite the fact theyve shown no signs of the illness. The thought of kaci hickox being back in this small town near the border with canada has many people here concerned, particularly at the university where her boyfriend, ted wilbur, is a nursing student. An official at that college telling a local newspaper that if wilbur has direct contact with her during her quarantine, he would not be allowed back on campus until he too has been cleared of any health risk. You have the federal government recommending one course of action, states taking another, the military taking another. Isnt this a recipe for panic . I dont think so. What it is, the federal government, the cdc, is setting a certain level, a level beneath which you dont want to go. Its based on violenscience. The states have the option of being more stringent than the lower level of recommendation. And theyre doing that. There may be states that want to do more. But the cdc and the government feels what were putting forth are things based on solid science. That would suggest that what the military is doing and the states are doing is not based on the science. When you have the military going further than the federal government is recommending, who is the public supposed to trust . Well, the military is doing that. They can and are going more than you absolutely need to. The military culture and the ability to put someone in the barracks. The fact that people can be and are confined to bar racks in very comfortable way is a different, really, situation than the culture of the civilian population. But was it a mistake for the state of new jersey to quarantine kaci hickox, was that based on science . I dont want to use the word mistake. When people do things, the governors of new york and new jersey, doing it in good faith to do whats best for their constituents. Were trying to set the bar based on scientific data. But thats not to criticize or put down a decision that an official makes to go the extra mile. Thats judgment on their part. Governor Chris Christie has had no contact with the administration. Hows that possible . I cant explain that, george. Thats not the level that i work at. But i can tell you that the cdc and the administration is reaching out very actively to the state and local health officials. Finally, you know theres so much anxiety out there. What can you do to reassure americans . We can reassure the americans of what the facts are over and over again. We understand the fear. This virus is not spread by anything other than direct contact of the body fluids of someone who is sick. If you look at whats gone on in the united states, the only two cases that weve had that were infected in this country were two brave nurses taking care of a very sick person. But in this new video, which has not been authenticated, isis attempts to show that despite the bombings, the reconnaissance fights, it can place this hostage british journalist, john cantlie on a rooftop in broad daylight surrounded by cameras. The video even purports to show aerial footage of kobani taken from an isis drone, pinpointing the location where he was video taped. And if you compare the video and the aerial video with independent satellite views, you can see the same silver silos in the background. The same cluster of trees behind can h him. And because of the references to air drops and statements by u. S. Officials, it was likely shot just about a week ago or even less. Of course, in terms of finding candlie and other hostages, a we weekold tape might as well be a month old. They have likely moved him far from that spot. Politics now. Midterm elections next week. Reporter this morning as polo mogul John Goodmans fate is in the hands of a jury, a twist. An alleged rest for jury tampering. Sending a text to goodmans friend, chris campson, seen here testifying last week, offering to sway a jury member in exchange for cash. It sparked an investigation. Its the latest jury drama to rock the highprofile retrial of the multimillionaire whos first conviction and 16year instance was thrown out due to juror misconduct. Inside the courtroom on monday, the defense using closing arguments to make an impassioned final push for his freedom. A tragic, terrible accident occurred. But there were no crimes committed by mr. Goodman. Reporter arguing that goodman, pleading not guilty, wasnt drunk when he tboned 23yearolds car into a canal, but the brakes on the bentley failed. And he only left the scene because he was disoriented. He wasnt thinking about the can canal. Reporter prosecutors striking back. If he had stayed at the scene, scott wilson might be alive today. Reporter saying he was drunk from a night of partying. And he was clearly intoxicate when had he made this 911 call nearly an hour after the crash. I stopped and pulled out in front and i didnt see a car and where am i . Reporter his team claims he was drunk after the accident and wouldnt have called 911 if he had something to hide. If youre the average nonprofessional athlete, what is your recommendation . Look at a couple of things when you talk about the physiology between the mom and the baby. We care about the moms core temperature, so dont get overheated. We care about the maternal heart rate. Loose ligaments, can make sprains more easy to. Happen. I dont cook, im a bad cook, im a good cook. Start slowly. Start with maybe one meal a week if youre feeling fearful and build from that. Its not an all or nothing venture. Ease into it slowly.
