recall affecting millions. the new warning about cuisinart food processors. parts of the blade broke off ending up in food injuring dozens. and incredible rescue. the mother running after her dog trapped in the ice, then falling in. her 8-year-old hearing her screams calling 911. >> she needs to come back to the shore. >> police say you need to come back to the shore. you need to come back to the shore. >> how she and her dog made it out and our live demonstration. what to do if you fall through the ice. good morning, america. what a brave little boy and an amazing rescue, the mother and her dog both pulled out alive. >> thank goodness for that. we'll have a lot more this morning about how to protect yo weather as a massive wave of cold is moving in. >> it is coming here but we'll begin with breaking news from the trump transition. president-elect expected to choose rick perry for energy secretary. he met with the former texas governor monday at trump tower. you see him right there. >> and also trump nominating exxonmobil ceo rex tillerson for secretary of state. his close ties to vladimir putin raising questions and abc's tom llamas at the white house with all the details for us. good morning, tom. >> reporter: robin, good morning to you and the president-elect just tweeting moments ago posting on twitter, i have chosen one of the truly great business leaders of the world, rex tillerson, to be secretary of state. if tillerson is confirmed this would totally break with tradition because he'd be the first pick ever with no government or military experience to lead the state department. this as president-elect trump is also asking one of his former rivals to join his administration. this morning, president-elect donald trump making that much anticipated announcement, selecting exxonmobil's ceo, rex tillerson, to be secretary of state as a businessman, tillerson was clear about his goals on deals overseas. >> i'm not here to represent the united states government's interests. i'm not here to defend it nor am i here to criticize it. that's not what i do. i'm a businessman. >> reporter: tillerson has no formal experience in government. but since taking his current role in 2006, the 64-year-old has brokered international deals as the leader of one of the world's most valuable publicly traded oil companies, including deals with russia. >> i've invested a lot of money, our company has invested a lot of money in russia. very successfully. >> reporter: tillerson's global ties especially his relationship with russian president vladimir putin now under the microscope. the two seen here sharing a champagne toast, putin even honoring him with the order of friendship, one of the country's top honors for foreigners. >> i've known him since 1999 and with him. i don't agree with everything he's doing. i don't agree with everything a lost leaders are doing. >> reporter: it happened as leaders in congress break with the president-elect, announcing they will investigate if russia used hackers to try and influence the election. >> there's simply cannot be a partisan issue. >> reporter: overnight the president weighing in. >> i don't think there was any doubt among anybody in the media or among members of congress as to who was being advantaged or disadvantaged by the political gossip that was being put out in drip, drip, drip fashion. >> reporter: this as transition sources tell abc news president-elect trump has selected former texas governor rick perry as secretary of the department of energy. perry, who once compared trump to cancer also famously forgot he wanted to abolish the energy department. >> the third agency of education, the -- commerce and, let's see. i can't. the third one i can't, sorry. oops. >> reporter: perry who was recently on "dancing with the stars" seen here with vanilla ice was back at trump tower just yesterday for a second round of meetings. and for weeks we have been telling you president-elect trump is set to hold a news conference tomorrow to discuss his business ties, we now know that trump is actually postponing that news conference but last night he tweeted this, posting this on twitter. even though i'm not mandated by law to do so, i will be leaving my businesses before january 20th so that i can focus full time on the presidency. two of my children, don and eric, plus executives, will manage them. no new deals will be done during my terms in office but, again, still so many questions about his business dealings and exactly how this arrangement will work out. we don't know when that news conference will be. >> they have a lot down there, tom, thanks very much. more on this from martha raddatz. matt dowd and, martha, let me begin with you on rex tillerson. came well recommended from james baker and robert gates and condi rice, w. bush so what's the best case for him? >> reporter: he is a highly successful dealmaker. he does know players around the world, not just in russia and knows how to negotiate. he said himself the russian government knows that when he says no, he means it and if you want to shake things up around the world and inside the state department itself with those career diplomats, rex tillerson can probably do that. and if trump brings in john bolton as deputy secretary of state who has a very different view of the world than it seems trump has he will have a kind of good cop/bad cop working there with tillerson and bolton and that can potentially work well. but i think we also have to point out, george, that we really don't know what trump's gr really is and where he wants to go with it. >> we could find out at the confirmation hearings. tillerson also getting caught in a squeeze play, questions over ties to putin and democrats on climb change. >> reporter: exactly and that's another thing. we don't really know what tillerson will do with that. he had business dealings affected by that before. he says he certainly believes in climate change. but putin said they want a better relationship and that is going to be tougher right now because of that and because of these hacking charges although so far donald trump says he doesn't believe that. >> on those hacking charges, matthew dowd, the real collision coming between donald trump, the president-elect and congress including republicans in congress. >> well, looks what donald trump has united opposition on this whole issue not only reeled to what martha said to the cabinet pick but opposition and on this issue it goes to does it delegitimize donald trump's presidency at the beginning. to hillary clinton and questions related to the election and now you have this situation which donald trump and his staff know is problematic for the integrity as he enters this office so it's going to be a big problem. monday night when the electors meet, how many will abandon him in the course of this. >> you know rick perry pretty well. what difference can he make? >> i know him really well and took his filing years ago when he ran as a democrat when i was working at the democratic party. i think the fascinating thing about this, donald trump is nominating rick perry who wants to disband the energy department. he's nominated somebody to be head of epa that wants to get rid of regulations. he's nominated somebody as secretary of education that is against much of what the education wants to do and nominated somebody as health and -- hew as somebody who wants to get rid of much of what they want to do. he has a cabinet he put together againsmu cabinet positions are supposed to be doing. >> thanks very much. michael. >> thank you, george. now to the deep freeze alert from california to new york. ginger is tracking it all and, ginger, i have out my winter coat. i think i need my winter winter coat because this could be the coldest december in a decade. >> you need your february coat. what you need because that's the type of air we're talking about. 15 to 30 degrees below average. it creates a lot of lake-effect snow, already did in my hometown. that's where pictures are from right now. more than 18 inches in just the last five days and settling in with the windchill advisories and national weather service warning if you're exposed to this type of air, windchills 30 below or less you could see just in 30 minutes frostbite. this is serious. also the time of year we start to hear about the polar vortex, not a monster but a broad area of low pressure and may feel like it because the jet stream that acts as a fence keeping that cold air in, well that, is diving south and allowing some cold air to come in and by some of that, 25 below the like, nashville, 9, you guys and hits the northeast friday. >> pull up the long johns. >> february, yes. >> thank you, ginger. the latest on the dylann roof trial coming off a chilling day where the jury saw evidence where he killed nine african-americans had plans to target more black churches and steve osunsami is outside the courtroom. good morning, steve. >> reporter: good morning to you, george. the victims' families have been filling the courtroom and there have been awkward moments with dylann roof and one of his lawyers laughing during breaks and there's nothing funny here at all. this morning, we expect to hear from police seen here arresting dylann roof in north carolina. after police say he ran from the murder scene at this historic black church in charleston. from his car, police say they pulled a confederate flag and this 45 caliber glock under a pillow in the backseat and burned american flag in the trunk. they also found a list of other black churches in the charleston area. in his confession roof fbi he considered other targets. >> i thought about going to like a black festival or something like that but they got security and stuff and you got that wait for the day. >> reporter: his video confession played in court is cold-blooded. >> why did you have to do it? >> well, i had to do it because somebody had to do something because black people are killing white people every day. >> reporter: he killed those nine at a bible study because he's a white nastist who doesn't believe that black lives matter at all. >> is that why you chose that church. >> oh, yes. >> because you were looking for african-americans? >> right. i wasn't going to go to another church, you know, because there could have been white people there. >> reporter: jurors are learning he should have never been able to buy the gun. video show him going and coming from a gun store a whole two months before the killings, a background check should have denied him the firearm because of a previous arrest for drug possession. the government got back to that gun store owner by the end of june, a full two weeks after the killings, robin. >> disturbing to hear that, steve, thank you. to that breaking news of a recall of a popular kitchen item. older blades on cuisinart food processors could break apart and end up in your food and david kerley has the details. >> reporter: an urgent warning for a holiday staple. conair the maker of cuisinart and the government announcing that recall of 8 million food processors. >> these are in millions of american homes including my own and they're really dangerous products. >> reporter: the cpsc and conair urging consumers to stop using the processor's riveted blades with four rivets and beige center hub seen here working properly in this infomercial but those blades can crack over time sending small metal p your processed food. >> imagine having broken bits of a metal blade in your food and in your mouth. there are dozens of incidents of cuts to the mouth and broken teeth because of these products. >> reporter: conair says there are 69 reports of these broken blades and 30 reports of cuts in consumers' mouths or tooth injuries. made over the past 22 years, 22 different models are being recalled. >> it's probably more in the 20-year-old side and so we don't want consumers to be complacent even if they think they had it for a long time, put it aside. check the model number. make sure you don't have a recalled product and if you do, please act on the recall. >> reporter: some models were just made last year. this ordered minutes ago. can you go to cpsc.gov. i was just there and see if yours is one of those recalled. now, the company is offering a free replacement blade if you do have one of these recalls and as we said, robin, them out there. >> a lot of them and very serious issue, thank you. >> thank you, robin. now to a manhunt for four thieves accused of stealing more than a million dollars worth of gold in france. terry moran has the latest, good morning, terry. >> reporter: good morning, michael. the heists get more and more spectacular in europe. they are more brazen and looks like they're taking tips from hollywood but it's all dangerously real. this morning an all-out manhunt for the armed robbers who left this scene on a french roadway monday. cars engulfed in flames after assailants targeted an armored truck french authorities say and made off with over a million dollars in loot. a meticulously planned ambush just like from the movie "heat." but in this real-life heist police say four heavily armed men in multiple cars surrounded the semi armored truck forcing it off the highway near lyon and grabbed 154 pounds of gold dust setting one of their own cars on fire. french police say that two security guards were locked inside their truck as the flames spread to nearby cars but authorities later rescued them unhurt. the brazen robbery the latest in a string of high-profile and as yet unsolved heists in france. there was the kim kardashian robbery in paris last october. five men escaping on bicycles captured in this footage after they allegedly stole up to $10 million in jewelry from kardashian who was tied up and held at gunpoint and the so-called heist of the century, $143 million in jewels nabbed from a jewelry exhibition at a hotel in cannes in 2013. police say that fire was set likely deliberately to destroy evidence and create a diversion and thieves, michael, are still on the lam. >> quite a few high-profile things happening in paris. do they think it's the same ring? >> reporter: well, it is actually they think just opportunistic and careful planning. they have not been able to get on top of the gangs, more than one, that are perpetrating these robbery. >> thank you, terry. >> on to amy right now with today's other top stories. manhunt in georgia. >> the man accused of shooting two police officers in northeast georgia is now under arrest this morning after a three-hour manhunt. police tracked him to a wooded area, earlier they say he opened fire after he was stopped in a stolen car. the officers are expected to survive. six police officers have been shot in georgia in just the last week. overseas there are growing concerns we may see an even larger humanitarian disaster in syria. government forces have retaken nearly all of the city of aleppo. tens of thousands of civilians are trapped in a small area still held by rebels and there are reports that troops have entered homes and shot civilians including about two dozen women and children. well, the scandal surrounding wells fargo i expanding. prudential life insurance has now stopped the bank from selling its policies as officials in two states investigate whether wells fargo signed up customers for insurance without the customer's permission. 9 bank paid a hefty fine after it was accused of doing the same thing with its own products to meet sales goals. and some tense moments on this delta air lines flight in detroit when police dragged a woman down off the aisle and then off the plane. they say that she had not complied with boarding procedures and was refusing to give up her seat. she was arrested and is due in court today. what an exit. all right. finally what looked like a blow-out turned into a thriller on monday night football. tom brady and the patriots finally pull ahead for good and beat the ravens, look at that. 30-23. brady threw three touchdowns, the patriots appear to be on the road to another super bowl. >> what do you think? >> why you looking >> what do you di about that. >> they have a great shot. they'll miss gronkowski but -- >> amy is out there right now. >> i said it. >> that's your pick. >> new storm out west. >> you know i'm calling them for the super bowl and totally going for it, michael. you know how much i know about sports. all right. let's talk mr. the pineapple express and fire hose of moisture that will come at northern california tonight through tomorrow. you even have flood watches in place, some of those burn areas could see really big flash flooding so watch out for that debris flow and southern california by the end of the week. - single digit wind chills thursday - warmer weekend - wintry mix saturday am to all rain today: mostly cloudy. slight chance of pm rain, mainly east of i-95. highs: 43-49 winds: se 5 mph tonight: partly cloudy. cold. lows: 29-34 winds: light wednesday: partly cloudy. highs: 39-46 winds: nw 5-15 mph again, didn't spend enough time with that. boston 16 below buy friday. pats all the way. i said pats. you can do that. >> nobody wants to go there to play in that weather. the decision that could determine dalia dippolito's trial. the woman accused of trying to hire a hit man to kill husband choosing not to take the stand and the bombshell revealed in court about her child. a warning this winter after rescue in a lake. we'll give you a live demonstration. frozen lake in minnesota. the firefighter right there. what to did if you fall through especially if you're alone. you'll want to see this on "gma." you'farewell, cookie betdough ice cream.e! what's that you're drinking? i'm sorry to tell you, ma'am, he's been killed? the spotlight on this video made by the boynton beach police department which the defense argues was staged and posted online to impress the crew of the tv show "cops" and displayed a lack of integrity in the investigation. a claim the police department denies but on monday the judge ruling that the infamous viral video will be shown the defense case the state has a right to put that in evidence. >> reporter: dippolito's lawyers insisting the police set her up. dippolito maintains she is innocent. >> this case is 100% on the egregious misconduct of the boynton beach police department and how they used dalia dippolito as a pawn to generate good reality tv for the show "cops." >> reporter: however, prosecutors arguing the video they showed speaks for itself. >> 4700 bucks. she wanted two bullets put in her husband's head. >> reporter: the prosecution will get a chance to give its rebuttal this morning and then dalia dippolito's fate will once again be in the hands of jurors, george. >> okay, let's talk to our legal team, dan abrams and sunny hostin. no testimony. no big surprise. >> no, if she had testified she'd suddenly have to explain why in the first case the defense was, i thought i was acting and then in this case the defense has been put the police on trial because if she had testified all of her past statements meaning including interviews with amy, statements she's made in pretrial hearings, all of which focused on this i was in a reality show defense would have come in and yet in this case the defense is saying, well, that's not really what we're arguing this time. what we're really arguing this time if you want to hold the police accountable throughout this country that dalia dippolito case is the way to do it. and -- >> it's rare anyway for a defendant to testify. we were sitting here before coming out thinking, which defendants have testified and it's been helpful in a murder case? maybe the kennedy case. that was a murder case. maybe slager because officers when they get on the witness stand do pretty well i think but by and large she had no choice. always a gamble. >> the defense fought hard against having that staged fake murder video shown. big impact. >> big, big she reacts even before being told that her husband allegedly has been murdered. it's bad acting at the worst and then at the beginning of the video she says i'm 5,000% sure i want him murdered. in order to prove that it was the police officer's fault, the police department's fault they have to show this defense has to show basically that they induced her to say that. that they planted this crime in her mind. there's no evidence of that. >> and it's the defense's fault it came in. meaning the prosecution, the defense and the judge had all agreed, we won't introduce it but the defense then raises the issue on cross-examination of one of the police officers and now the prosecutors say wait a sec, if this is what you make as the heart of the defense we have to present that video. >> they opened the door. >> does that kill the entrapment defense? >> the entrapment defense is not -- look, if you want to say you're entrapped an argument you make in front of a judge saying therefore evidence shouldn't come in. s, you can make it in front of a jury but nowhere near as effective to say, we were all kind of suckered into this situation. she's on tape saying it. it is very tough to unring that bell with a jury by just saying, well, she was put in this situation where she shouldn't have been in and it's not a legally admissible situation. that's an argument -- >> i think it kills the entrapment defense. how do you show the police induced her, that they planted this notion of killing her husband in her mind when she says i'm 5,000% sure i want him dead. >> big plea for sympathy, that revelation she has a son. >> that's not going to work. perhaps at sentencing that is something that can be considered but she was convicted the first time 20 years, convicted and then i think it was 20 years in prison. let's face it, i think she's going to be convicted again. maybe not 20 year, maybe 15. >> i don't know. i think she's facing exactly the same situation. you never know. you can get one juror. that's her best bet. >> that's true. >> michael, what's coming up? >> on our big board, could a drug millions of already take help fight alzheimer's? a mother and daughter surviving a fall, a mother and her dog surviving a fall through ice. the life-saving tips and our live demonstration when we come back in two minutes. there he is. just getting set up for us. when a cold calls... achoo! ...answer it. with zicam cold remedy. it shortens colds, so you get better, faster. colds are gonna call. answer them with zicam! zicam. get your better back. now in great tasting crystals. and thanks to target, i got to the after party - this nice little outfit just in time using order pickup. stay fresh! get last minute gifts with order pickup at target. announcement: thisbiggest of the decade.the with total accumulation of up to three feet. roads will be shut down indefinitely. and schools are closed. campbell's soups go great with a cold and a nice red. made for real, real life. welcome back. time for our big board breaking down more of this morning's top stories. gio benitez is at the table. i thought we'd kick you out in the cold. >> nice and warm in the studio. >> important story you'll share. first another important story. could there be a breakthrough in the fight against alzheimer's? a new study suggests a link between the cholesterol fighting drug statins and a reduced risk in the disease. dr. jen ashton joining us now with more on this. you have our attention, so many people take statins. >> there are about 5 million americans right now living with alzheimer's disease. about 34 million the statin drug to lower their cholesterol to protect their heart and this study found an association between those and with a lowered risk of alzheimer's in some groups as much as 10%. this varied based on the dose, type and race, gender and ethnicity of those taking it and the theory involved cholesterol levels and evidence that that is linked to those plaques that form in the brain. >> knowing this information now do you think we'll see a big uptick in the use of statins? >> probably not yet. it's not quite ready for prime time and needs more research. you always need to consider risk versus benefit versus alternative and some cases, of course, cost and really you have to remember there are more things that affect the cholesterol level than just diet although that's very important and there are other things that cause alzheimer's disease. we know there are other associated risk factors such as head trauma. environmental factors, so this may be an important piece of the puzzle but it's still a piece. not the whole pie. >> very promising, though. yes. all right. jen. >> absolutely. >> thank you, doc. now to an amazing story of survival. an 8-year-old boy coming to his mother's rescue after she fell into an ice covered pond outside of chicago. the boy quick on his feet made this 911 call. >> tell her that the police said she needs to come back to the shore. >> the police say you need to come back to the shore. you need to come back to the shore. >> good job. good job. >> good job there, young man. it was her son who called in. thankfully the rescuers got there in time and she's okay but, gio, if you find yourself walking along a -- and you fall into an icy pond what do you do? >> this will be a little bit of a live show and tell and enlisted the help of kent vnuk joining us from lake minnetonka in minnesota where the temperature there is really, really quite low. he's going to help us illustrate how to survive and you heard that dispatcher say come back to the shore. that's what you want to do. you need to come back. it goes against your instinct, right? isn't that right, lieutenant? >> yeah, absolutely. what you want to do is go back to where you fell in. you know that ice was strong where you were just walking. >> that's right and once you actually get back to that ice, once you swim back to it you find that strong ice. you need to sort of pick yourself up and there is a way to detroit. called the elbow kick roll your way out. can you tell us about that, lieutenant. >> oh. yeah, absolutely. as you notice you just fell in. what we want to do is go back to where he just fell in. what you need to do is get your body as far out of the water as you can and elbows on the ice and lay horizontal like doing the breaststroke and kick your feet as hard as you can like you're swimming at the same time pull yourself up roll away from that hole. we want you to roll away from that hole where you get back on to safe ice. >> okay, that's if you're by yourself. if you're with a friend. >> right away you'll want to try to help but the first thing you got to do. call 911. and once -- >> like the boy did. >> call 911 first then you can try to help and once you're there to help, you want to stay about 20 feet away from the hole. you want to try to use something to actually pull them out. right, lieutenant?
