Though the governor says the plan should create greater efficiency within the state, some say the people who need it the most could soon be feeling the hurt. Today, a Senate Subcommittee met about preparing a bill to oversee the new privatized program. The idea is to ensure the money thats earmarked for Program Beneficiaries would stay that way. Its obviously a real hot topic, with the room packed to standing room only, and around 20 people testifying about their concerns. One big complaint. The changes are happening too quickly. A state Oversight Committee will be interviewing a number of people connected to the case involving Midwest Academy in keokuk. Officials from the department of education, human services, office, and others will go before the committee in the coming weeks to look at exactly what happened. Stephanie Committee Member Ruth Ann Gaines tells local 5 that the group will quote be prepared. To request additional interviews with people who are connected to the school, like an administrator, teacher, parent, or student. Well keep you updated on this story at the statehouse as well. Jack senator Chuck Grassley is speaking out about his decision to join other Senate Republicans in denying hearings for a potential Supreme Court justice nominee. Grassley says this is not an issue about a person, but rather about the process. He says this is an opportunity for the people to have a voice in choosing the next Supreme Court nominee. Stephanie president obama, on the other hand, says he will put up a Supreme Court justice nominee, despite a possible roadblock in the senate. He wrote on the independent scotus blog today that, quote the constiution vests in the president the power to appoint judges to the Supreme Court. The president also spoke to reporters at the white house today, saying that he hopes senators will fulfill their constitutional responsibility as well. My hope and expectation is that once there is an actual nominee, once this is no longer an abstraction that those on the Judiciary Committee recognize that their job is to give this person a hearing to show the courtesy of meeting with them. Stephanie a lot of eyes on a high school in des moines as it makes a change geared to make students of any gender identity feel safe. Roosevelt high school is opening up two of its restrooms all, now labeling them all gender restrooms. Jack the change comes after one student started a petiton. And brought it to school leaders. But whats next. And what about the School Locker rooms . Local fives Nikki Davidson is here with more. Nikki right. All thats going to be changing at the school physically is a new sign on those single stall bathrooms. No one is required to use them. Theyre just available for anyone if thats what theyd like. umm yeah lets go in its a proud day for junior zoey wagner. She advocated for a safe space. This will benefit everyone a private restroom for her fellow students after a chance encounter. 5 58 16 i was using the restroom rone day, and a student who identifies as a male, he was using the womans restroom because for some reason he didnt feel safe using a restroom intended for the gender he identified with, i dont think thats right. After only about a ten minute meeting with prinicpal kevin biggs. But the single stall private restrooms tucked away in the library. Are now open to all. With an emphasis on them being gender neutral. Prinicpal biggs says Roosevelt High School is diverse. They have a Significant Group of transgender students. 5 52 49 i would say we have anywhere from 5 to 10, maybe more some havent come out. But these are as far as the school has planned when it comes to creating new spaces for transgender students. 5 44 50 we want to be catious of making adjustments to locker rooms for specific groups. We want everyone to feel comfortable without it having to be adjusted. He says. High school is about growing up. And part of that means not everyone is always going to agree. 5 45 23 we want lockerooms to be accessible to all, in transgender situation might make students feel uncomfortable, but sometimes that wrong. Coming up on local 5 sports well introduce you to david harris as he trades in the red of iowa state for panther jon welcome back. The university of Northern Iowas search for an Athletic Director is over. Today they named david harris the senior associate Athletic Director at iowa state as their new ad. Heres more from Sports Reporter Josh Christianson in cedar falls. There were 3 finalists for the ad position here at Northern Iowa. And the school feels it has found the right person for the job in david harris. Hes been at iowa state for the last 10 years before that he worked at wisconsin and his alma mater mississippi. He says a lot of things academic reputation. Its one of the best public universities in the midwest and as someone who came from the Academic Services background that was very important to me. From an athletics standpoint there is such a Strong Foundation in place. Uni has been good in multiple sports for multiple years. One person harris made sure to thank was isu Athletic Director Jamie Pollard who was in attendance. Jamie i have to say its kind of odd that youre in the back of the room and im up here at the microphone im not used to this im sure ill get used to it. Certainly i have mixed emotions. 14 years of working with somebody im going to miss david but i couldnt be more excited for david and his family. Hes earned this opportunity he is outstanding at what he does. Harris said the biggest challenge he faces is finances. We have to begin to build those relationships in the community and then obviously start to look at strategically going to be. Jon david harris isnt the only cyclone to find a job. Former iowa state football coach paul rhoads has landed at arkansas. Rhoads will take over as the defensive backs coach for the razorbacks. Arkansas is coach by Brett Bielema former wisconsin head coach. Rhoads was fired this past november he finished 39 in 2015. Jon today Top High School wrestler from class 1a 2aand 3a were honored with the dan gable mr. Wrestler award. Its a presitgious honor in a state where wrestling is king. Its given to the top wrestler in each class as nominated and voted on by the Iowa High School wrestling coaches and wrestling officials. This year the honor of the dan gable mr wrestler award went to Carter Happel of lisbon for 1a. In 2a it was albias carter isley who had a perfect 450 record this season on his way to a 285 pound title. And in 3a southeast polks Ethan Andersen glaimed the mr wrestler award. Its something School Careers for all three. It means a lot. It tells about the whole journey just all four years time to look at this and think about all of the moments. All of the ups and downs and everything that has happened really. Its an awesome feeling knowing that all of the coaches and everybody picked me as one of the top wrestlers in iowa. Its an awesome feeling to have. Its about the sport and its about a continuation of the sport its about the state of iowa, and its not only about the state of iowa its all over the world, but the state of iowa is represented all over the world in wrestling and because of that im pretty proud.
