Dinner last night. More than 100,000 College Students in pennsylvania are pressing pause on their Education Today because faculty members are on strike. Those professors work at the 14 state run universities, among them the nations oldest historic black university, cheney university. That is where gray hall is standing by on campus with more. Reporter this is pretty much the scene of over a dozen schools across the state. Behind me the faculty along with students with the signs, they are on the picket line calling for change. There are several issues on the table here and it boils down to money and benefits. What do we want . The strike comes after negotiations between the Pennsylvania State system of Higher Education and the Faculty Union of 5,000 members could not reach a new contract. We are hoping for a negotiated fair contract. What the faculty is interested in is quality public Higher Education. Its for the future of the commonwealth. Both sides are trying to hammer out a deal for over a year. The issue is better pay and better medical benefits. Fulltime professors start at 47,000 a year and top off at about 112,000 plus benefits. They are offering for more than 7 to a more than 17 increase and it calls for an increase cost of medical benefits. They defended the proposal. These are difficult times for the universities if they wont agree to share the cost of their Health Care Like everyone else has. The union of course does not agree. What is unfair is that for everything they give us they try to take from most of us so its a loss for us. The disto strike impacts 100,000 students. This brings concern but they are supporting them. We have no choice. Its a disruption, due to coram rate greed the people have to stand up. Back out live, students and faculty here is a whether there is five people or 500, they continue to hit the picket lines until an agreement is reached and the big question is when is the next negotiating meeting. That is unclear and well keep you posted. Gray hall, channel 6 action news. Thank you. Turning to the weather now, it doesnt feel like midoctober.
