After nine years of waking up at this prison, o. J. Simpson facing only ten more weeks here. No more mopping of the gym floors, no more waiting in line for chow. No more mandatory lights out. What we seemed to see yesterday was vintage o. J. , the flashes of charm, the anger, defiance but also gratitude. Mr. Simpson, i do vote to grant parole. Reporter o. J. Simpson obviously was a little bit emotional as well and even i got a little emotional. Reporter the socalled parole hearing of the century lasted just over an hour. Im sorry about that. It feels like it. You look great for 90. So you believe that the property was yours . Its been ruled legally by the state of california that it was my property and theyve given it to me. Now, the Goldman Family says it will continue to hound him for that settlement it won against him in 1997 but the one thing they cannot touch by law is his nfl pension, david. All right, matt gutman in nevada for us. Lets bring in dan abrams this morning because, dan, you were honest about o. J. Simpsons performance during this parole hearing. You thought he wasnt very good and yet it was a unanimous vote so what happened here. So he basically relitigated the crime again. He didnt express enough remorse. I mean, this was easy, right. All he had to do was go in there, be contrite, say hes sorry. Say hes ready to move on, say hes ready to be a productive member of society and instead he goes into all the details of why he was wronged in effect and he wasnt that bad. The bottom line though is that there is really a form that these parole officers follow and im confident they had made that decision before o. J. Simpson came in, so he really would have had to do something so bad so out of the ordinary, so unexpected to change what i think were probably the four votes that he had before he even came in. You heard one of the parole commissioners tell him that hes going to be watched very closely and even listed some of the things that hell face in life on parole. Yeah, theres going to be restrictions on travel, on alcohol, on cho he can associate with on weapons possessions, and this is a different world. This is now a world with smartphones that o. J. Simpson didnt have when he went to prison nine years ago so everyone is going to be watching the most famous or infamous parolee in america as he goes around and, remember, thats also going to be relevant with regard to the goldmans because they want to know what is he up to . How is he making any money. Any money he earns is supposed to go to paying back that civil judgment. You bring up that point. Hes 70 years old even though the commissioner had him at 90 in the beginning. What are the chances of him getting a job . What kind of job would you imagine. I dont think hell get a job. If he gets a job. Hell hand it over. The only reason he would get a job if the parole board demands it. It is one of the possible things they could require. I dont know that theyll require a 70yearold man to necessarily get a job. The money he gets from the nfl he cant stuff. J. s friend Bruce Fromong who was the victim of that botched robbery attempt and spoke on o. J. s behalf in court yesterday. Bruce, good morning. I know your testimony back in 2008 was part of the reason why o. J. Ended up behind bars in the first place. Why the change of heart . Well, i think that o. J. Has served his time and, you know, he served what he was supposed to do and it was time for him to get out. You had a gun pointed to your head during that robbery attempt. How does one forgive . I know you probably will never forget it but how does one forgive it. It wasnt o. J. , lets make it clear. It wasnt o. J. That put the gun to my head. That was mcclinton that came up, threatened to kill me. O. J. Was found criminally responsible for creating the situation that led to that. Yeah, yes, he was. He was the one that, you know, but he was also the one that even though he denies it, he was also the one that said put the gun down. Put the gun down. It was waving and making a motion for mcclinton to put the gun down and thats when mcclinton backed up, as well. Bruce, youve said for quite some time now that you dont believe the sentence o. J. Received was justified. Why not . Well, maybe according to the law it was. Im you know, im not a lawyer. I dont know exactly how they determine how long i had told the d. A. At the time i felt that one to three years was a proper sentence for it. You know, the people that came in, the guy that came in and hit me, you know, he got 27 months. Mcclinton, the guy that put a gun in my face threatened to kill me got probation, you know, when judge glass sentenced o. J. , you know, she was talking about how somebody could have been killed. How somebody you know, anybody could have been hit by a stray bullett. He gets 9 1 2 to 33 and gets to mcclinton and its probation. Tom riccio got total immunity after waiting eight days, makes 320,000, goes to o. J. , lies about going theres going to be thousands of pieces of his personal memorabilia. Helps plan this whole thing, gets total immunity. I mean, you know, nobody in there served time except for stewart who did 27 months and o. J. Simpson that did 9 1 2 to 33. Donald trump is suddenly tightlipped about the attorney general. After unloading on him to the New York Times mr. President , does Jeff Sessions still have your support . Clearly he has confidence in him or he would not be the attorney general. Reporter as for sessions he made it clear thursday he has no intention to leave the job unless he is pushed out. The special counsel leading the russia investigation. Telling the times that mueller would cross a red line if his investigators start looking into trump family finances. I think thats a violation. Look, this is about russia. Reporter in some ways the russia probe is already a family affair. President trumps Senior Adviser and soninlaw Jared Kushner is set to appear before the Senate Intelligence committee on monday for a closed door interview. Also in the mix, his son don junior and Paul Manafort. Both currently considering an invitation to testify before the Senate Judiciary committee. And if they dont appear voluntarily im not concerned because if they dont theyll be subpoenaed. Reporter the question now is whether or not the president supports special counsel robert mueller. Yesterday Deputy Press Secretary Sarah Sanders was asked that question and said the president has no intention, no plans to fire mueller but then she added this, she said that she couldnt predict what the president would do if, quote, mueller could potentially create an outrageous situation that would force the president to act. So very much keeping up the criticism of mueller but no indication that the president would actually do that Nuclear Option of firing him. Right and this is all coming as the white house is facing even more shakeups, yes . Reporter absolutely. We are told that there is expected to be a new Communications Director announced today. Anthony scaramucci, businessman, trump family friend, he met with the president and with ivanka trump for over an hour yesterday. Here at the white house, we are told he is expected to be named the Communications Director and that most of the senior staff here including press Secretary Sean Spicer didnt even know that this was the plan or that the president was meeting with him. The police chief here says justine should still be alive and this should have never happened and calling on the officer who shot her to cooperate with the investigation. This should not have happened. Reporter damond called 911 late saturday night thinking someone was being assaulted in the alley behind her home. I can hear someone out the back in the transcript. His former manager telling abc news he thinks simpson wants to live near those closest to him. I think hell come to the tampa area. A lot of his friends are in tampa. Im in tampa. His kids there. Reporter he lived here for about ten years soaking in the sun and a lot of time on the links but so far his attorney not commenting on where he will head once hes released from lovelock correctional center. Mr. Simpson has plenty of option, okay, he has plenty of options. Reporter authorized to qualify for a transfer he has to establish he has a support system in the area. The Florida Department of corrections saying as is the case with any offender who transfers under this routine procedure he will be assigned to a florida probation officer and will be supervised in accordance with the conditions of his proehl. His youngest son justin was spotted going to the gym. He had nothing to say about his fathers parole. Father and son not on speaking territories. Justin and his sister sydney were raised from south florida after his fathers acquittal on murder for their father. He had trouble laying low. During a blowup can his exgirlfriend simpson called 911 himself. We have a problem here. Im trying to get a girl to go to rehab. Shes been doing drugs for two days. What was his mood and did he sense this was coming . Well, o. J. , he had a pretty positive mood. He was optimistic. Nevertheless, he was realistic. He knew that his fate was in the hands of the parole board and hes done his best to serve his time honorably and i believe he has. Ive been to the prison to visit with him at least a half a dozen times. And most times that i see him there hes very upbeat. The guy is almost serene. Hes weirdly he is inspiring because, you know, a guy thats lost everything from a castle to a cage, the guy can maintain some positivity and hes respected in the prison. He was respected by the guards. Respected by other inmates. Do you think he learned anything while he was in prison. Well, obviously we all learn something day to day. I mean, o. J. Has a christian base. Hes fundamentally christian and hes got a chance to ponder about his mistakes that hes made in the past and i know hes grown as a 70yearold man. Doctor, i want to bring in tom. I know you were at the hearing with simpsons daughter and sister. What can you tell us about his life come october . Where does he plan to live . Well, hes going to go to florida. Theres several options actually. I heard somebody say hell go to tampa but hes not going to go to tampa. But we have several options were talking about. We first have to go to florida, report to the parole board, im sure and then from there were going to go visit his sister in california, were going to do a road trip. He wants to visit all the people that died while he was in prison and pay his respects. He wants to visit his daughters grave. He wants to visit nicoles grave and were just going to spend time with family out there. Hes going to visit nicoles grave . Yes. And you had said at one point he might live with you for a time until he can figure out where hes, in fact, going to live. Do you see that as a possibility . Thats were talking about several options. Were not really sure yet and, you know, i really cant disclose that right now, but theres several options that we have. But you but its your guess he will, in fact, end up in florida and dr. Johnson, before we go, i wanted to ask about some of the criticism from some who were watching who were expecting o. J. Simpson to be more contrite. How did you find him watching . Well, once again i think hes a very strong man. O. J. Still believes in his innocence as well as hes got plenty of followers including me that believe that he was unjustly found guilty of liability of ron goldmans death and nicoles death, its a shame. We feel very sad that weve lost those two people. As a matter of fact, americans have lost weve lost compassion for each other as a diverse ethnic group. Americas strength is based on its diversity and we need to come back together and unite this country so it can remain strong. Dr. Henry johnson, tom scotto, we appreciate your time. Simpson said hes led a conflictfree life. Well, everybody in the world except him knows hes led a conflict that he has not led a conflictfree life. He beat up his first wife. Do you how do you feel about the Public Safety with o. J. Simpson out . Well, i wish we would have learned that in the parole hearing yesterday. I wish the parole members would have asked that and pressured him a little bit more on what his life is going to be like and what he learned and was he rehabilitated. I dont know. He he stormed a hotel room with guns and goons to get a shirt back. He stabbed ron and nicole to death. We proved that in a civil case. He thinks hes above the law. You bring up the parole board. You heard one of the commissioners held up the hundreds of letters and said we had many in support of simpson but many in opposition too who wanted the acquittal and then the civil case to be brought up in front of the parole board. They said they would not do that. You knew that was the law. That it wouldnt be but how frustrating was that . For me its very frustrating because my perception of a parole hearing is to determine whether this individual is going to potentially be a threat to society, whether he has the possibility of doing something bad again, another bad decision. And i think thats just who he is. They never pushed him about anything. You know, he snapped at one of the commissioners who i forget the first gentleman who spoke, he snapped at him. There was no feedback to that. He lied numerous times about many things. There was never a question he was never requestioned about anything. My sense was they had a checklist of whatever it was, ten things and they checked them off and as long as he answered the proper number of items on the checklist, it was a done deal. Kim, youve written a book called media circus and you talk about suffering personal tragedy all within the sharp gaze of the media. I know that you have a 13yearold son. What do you say to him . His middle name is ron too by the way. What do you say to him about yesterdays events . Stay focused. Stay continuing to live a life with honor and integrity and grace. You know, it was never about the money. It was punishment and we didnt have the opportunity to see him go to jail or death row for murder. But he got a judgment against him and honoring that judgment or making him honor the judgment is the only punishment that we can get from it. All right.
