Good morning, as you just heard, we have a lot to get to. Indiana governor mike pence standing by live to taken to backlash of his states new law. Well get the latest on the highstakes Nuclear Talks with iran. We begin with the details of the terror in the sky. Well dig into what if anything, can be done to prevent another horror like this. David kerley starts us off. Reporter as investigators this morning continue to comb through the life of 27yearold Andreas Lubitz impacts of his deadly decision already affecting aviation. Listen to another germanwings copilot address his passengers. My crew today, and me were all here to fly with you. Reporter an attempted reassurance as airlines and paens are asking questions. First, should pilots be more rigorously scened psychologically. Investigators ground prescriptions and a doctors note discarded in his his past hes passed screenings and was issued clearance. It requires little in any time with a psychologist. Pilots are required to selfdiz close if there are any psychological issues or treatments. Obviously in a volunteer system like that it has limitations. Reporter second, how to look for warning signs. There are new reports now that depression may have led lubitz to take extended time off during his Flight Training in arizona. Should that have raised red flags . Absolutely. People fall through the cracks. The reason i think is that theres no set standard for how were supposed to evaluate these people. Reporter and then theres the question that already has some airlinesing. Should pilots be allowed in the cockpit alone . On the Germanwings Flight the pilot can be heard banging on the door trying to get back in. Its a simple fix. Put the flight aten dand in the cockpit when the pilot steps out. Reporter lufthansa says it will do what u. S. Airlines do mandate that two people be in the cockpit at all times. Lets get more on this from former fbi special agent brad garrett. And dan elroy, a pilot at the faa and an executive in the airlines industry. Brad, you have done a lot of profiling. Does this Andreas Lubitz any kind of profile of a m murder . The closest he comes is maybe work place violence mass murderers. People lose their job. Men lose their identity. Men lose their identity and everything is tied up in that and you add Mental Health issues, they want to annihilate what they cant have anymore. And he also wanted to make a name for himself. And so it sort of fits that profile. Thats the thing. One report that he might have told a former girlfriend he wanted to make name for himself. Youre going to be hearing big things about me. People have gone back and stud did eight crashes in the last ten years or so. Five of the pilots have sent off warning signs of some kind. As they do an autopsy of his background, theyre going to find red signs. Both in the depression area. Statements hes made. Talk in a very black dark or stormy way. There will be a number of statements that would be red lights to people who know this type of behavior. That are just not going to be picked up through normal testing. That does get to the question, dan elwell should there be more rigorous testing. Now its sort of on the honor system. Were screened incredibly closely and scrutinized. There is a form of a logical its just a questionnaire, isnt it . It is. We dont in the process see a psychiatrist or psychologist. I think additional screening on a recurrent basis every few year would probably be helpful. Maybe a lowering of standards. You dont require the same amount of hours in the cockpit. That prevent use from getting the kind of observation you would get with someone putting in hundreds and hundreds of hours. I can understand that opinion. But developing those hundreds and hundreds of hours takes years. And youre in front of many, manies. Flight attendants. Other pilots. Check pilots. Supervisors. Theres many opportunities. And it really is a team at an airline. And a flying organization. Everybody is looking out for one another. Everyone is empowered to step in. To make decisions. Its not it is not autocratic. Not if theyre locked out of the cockpit. We have seen reforms in europe. Two people in the cockpit at all times, as we have now in the United States. How about some of these other things. Cameras in the cockpits closer observation. Maybe even giving air Traffic Controllers the ability to intervene and fly the plane remotely. Well, i think certainly cameras, george, are a terrific idea. Because you can watch in realtime if its relaid or you can put it in a black box format and capture it if the plane wrecks, youll be able to recover, see exactly what happened. Im not against the Remote Control part of this. Though as we have experienced in so many other parts of the cyberworld, if someone can penetrate that, think of the danger we would have. Its in effect with unmanned aircraft. If you have atc with the ability to take over the airplane you introduce all kinds of possibilities. Dan elwell brad garrett, thank you very much. Now to the growing outrage over indianas new religious freedom act. Some calling for a boycott of College Basketballs final four in indianapolis. We have an exclusive live interview with governor mike pence after the latest from Rebecca Jarvis. Reporter with thousands taking on indianas governor and lenl slay chur over the new religious freedom act. Governor mike pence says hes willing to clarify the law. T critics say it gives businesses a license to discriminate. Allowing them to refuse service to gay couples for religious reasons. Now new questions about the impact on next weeks ncaa final four in indianapolis. Mark emmert saying the association is deeply committed to having inclusive environment. Were concerned about how this legislation could affect our student athletes and employees. The nba and Indiana Pacers saying all fans players and employees, should feel welcomed at all events. Supporters note 19 ore states have similar legislation. Designed to keep government from forcing people to provide services for people against their religious beliefs. If i thought it was about discrimination. It doesnt apply to disputes between private individuals unless Government Action is involved. Reporter but, this morning, backlash brewing from apple chief tim cook saying were deeply disappointed. To jason collins, the firstly gay nba player saying is it going to be legal for someone to discriminate against me . And now a new twitter hash tag, boy boy boycottindiana, trending. It doesnt align with the position that is hoosier hospitality. Reporter for this week Rebecca Jarvis abc news new york. Governor mike pence joins us. Thank you george for the opportunity. Was it a mistake to sign this law . Absolutely not. The religious freedom restoration act was signed into federal law by bill clinton more than 20 years ago. It lays out a frame work for ensuring that a very high level of scrutiny is given anytime Government Action impinges on the religious activity of any american. After that, some 19 states followed it, adopted it. After last years hobby lobby case, indiana properly brought the same version that then state senator barack obama voted for in illinois before our legislature. And i was proud to sign it into law last week. But look i think i understand that been a tremendous amount of misinformation. Misunderstanding around this bill. Im just termdetermined i appreciate the time on your show, im determined to clarify this. This is about protecting the religious liberty of people of faith and families of faith across this country. Thats what its been for more than 20 years. And thats what it is now as the law in indiana, george. One of the problems people point out is your civil rights laws dont include Sexual Orientation as a protected class. Some people wrote that it will protect those that oppose gay marriage. Christian bakers florists and photographers should not be punished for refusing to participate in a homosexual marriage. Is america right when they say a flors in indiana can now refuse to serve a gay couple without punishment . The purpose of this bill is to empower and it has been for 20 years the purpose of this legislation, the law in all 50 states in our federal courts and its the law by statute or Court Decision is to empower individuals when they believe that actions of government impinge on their constitut freedom of religion. A lot of people across the country. Looking at obamacare, hobby lobbys case feel their freedom is being impinged upon. The freedom at the federal level, all the state who is visit, are about addressing that. This is not about discrimination. This is about empowering people on government overreach. Yes or no if a flors in indiana refuses to serve a gay couple at their wedding, is that legal now in indiana . George, this is where this debate has gone, with misinformation. Its just a question, sir, yes or no . Theres been shameless rhetoric about my state and about this law and about its intention. All over the internet. People are trying to make it about one particular issue. And now youre doing that as well. The issue here the religious freedom restoration act has been on the books for more than 20 years. It does not apply, george to disputes between individuals unless Government Action is involved. In point of fact in more than two decades, the religious freedom restoration act has never been used to undermine antidiscrimination laws in the country. Im just bringing up a question from one of your spors er supporters talking about the bill right there. It said it would protect a christian florist. Is tolerance a two way street or not . Theres a lot of talk about tolerance having to do with people on the left. And, but here indiana steps forward, to protection the Constitutional Rights and privileges of freedom of religion. For people of faith and families of faith in our state. And this avalanche of intolerance poured on our state is outrageous. Youve been to indiana a bunch of times. You know it. There are no more kinder, more welcoming, more hospitable people in america than in the 92 counties of indiana. Yet, because we stepped forward for the purpose of recognizing the religious liberty rights of all the people of indiana, of every faith, we suffer under this avalanche for the last several days of condemnation and its completely baseless. Governor i i completely agree with you about the good people. I think people are getting tired of it george i do. Tolerance is a twoway street. You say toll vance a twoway street. Does that mean that christians who want to refuse service, or people of any other faith who want to refuse service to gays and lesbians thats legal in the state of indiana . Thats the yes or no question. If there is a Government Action or law that a individual believes impinges on their freedom of religion they have the opportunity to go the court, go the court and the court would evaluate the circumstances under the standards articulated in this act. Thats all it is. And when you see these headlines about indiana licensed to discriminate in indiana. And it just im telling you, george, it is a red herring. I think its deeply troubling. To millions of americans, and frankly, people all across the state of indiana, who feel troubled about government overreach. Its about government overhereby were reaching out to Business Leaders. Im pleased to be on your show speaking across the country ondetermined clear that ipd ipd has strengthened the foundation and the constitutional religious rights for how people. It sounds like what youre saying is people are able to use their religious freedom for their defense. Youre talking about a fix. Ing Sexual Orientation as a protected class under the states civil rights laws. Will you push for that . I will not push for that. Its not on any agenda. Its not be an objective of the people of the state of indiana. It doesnt have anything to do with this law. I mean george. Bill clinton signed the religious freedom restoration act in 1993. I remember that. Then state senator i bet you do. Then state senator barack obama voted for it in the state senate or illinois. The very same language. But illinois does have the protections in their state law. This isnt about individual rights or preferential rights for anyone. Says everyone has the right to the highest level of review if they feel that the government has impinged on the i get to the second possible fix. I really believe, george that it is it has been breath taking to many in indiana, me included, the fact that indiana joined some 30 other states and all 50 states in our federal courts by kree by ening the religious freedom restoration act. And yet from people who preach tolerance every day, weve been under an avalanche of intolerance. Im not going to take it lying down. The putting his expansion plans on hold in your state. Ive been in touch with mark emmerit at the ncaa. Weve been doing our level best to correct the gross mischaracterization of this law that has been spread all over the country be many in the media. Some of the Media Coverage has been shameless and reckless and the online attacks against the people of our state, im not going to stand for it. That may be. We weve tried to be responsible. One addition would be this chapter does not publish or eliminate a defense to a claim under any federal, state or local lair protecting civil rights or preventing dwim nation. Were not going to change the law. Okay. But if the General Assembly in indiana sends me a bill that adds a section that reiterates and amplifies and clarifies what the law really is and what it has been for the last 20 years, then im open to that. But were not going to change this. Its been tested in courts for more than two decades on the federal level in some 30 states. It represents a foundational protection for individuals. I got to tell you, george, theres a lot of people in this country concerned about government overreach into their religious liberty. Im one of them. I stand with them. Weve made sure the courts in indiana have used the highest standards. Let me ask then. Its about protecting the liberty of every hoosier in the state. Do you think it should be legal in the state of indiana to discriminate against gays or lesbians . George. A yes or no question. Come on. Hoosiers dont believe in discrimination. I mean, the way i was raised in a town in Southern Indiana is youre kind and caring and respectful to everyone. Anybody thats been in indiana for five minis knows that hoosier hop tallty tyhospitality is not a slogan, its a reality. People tell me i went to your state, people are so nice. This is not about discrimination. This is about protecting the religious liberty of every hoosier of every faith and were going to continue to work our hearts out to clarify that to the people of indiana and the people of this great country. Yes or no should it be legal to discriminate against gays and lesbians . George youre following the mantra of whats been on line. Im for protecting with the highest standards in our courts the religious liberties of hoosiers. I signed the bill. Were going to continue to explain it to people that dont understand it. If possible well find a way to amplify what this bill really is in the legislative process. I stand by this law. It was an important step forward when bill clinton signed it in 1993. Its an important step forward to protecting the bill of rights. Im proud that indianas adopt the religious freedom act. Governor pence. Thank you for your time. Lets get a reaction from the white house. White House Press Secretary josh earnest is with us. The governor say this is is the same law that barack obama voted for when he was in illinois. I appreciate you having me on the show. If you have to go back two decades to try to justify what youre doing today, it may raise questions. It should be easy for leaders to stand up and say, its wrong to discriminate against people just because of who they love. The fact is, this is not a political argument george as you pointed out in the interview with the governor, Business Leaders all across the country are hesitant to do business in indiana. Not because they dont like the people of indiana. The businesses are more likely to be and the customers are more likely to be discriminated against. The governor is in damage control mode this morning. What does president obama say to businesses thinking now of leaving indiana . Ultimately the businesses have to make decisions based on what they think is in the best interests of their business. Ultimately, george, look a couple of weeks ago, the president gave a speech standing at the foot of the bridge in sellma selma, alabama, the president talked about a couple of things. First, how average americans do have the power to change government. Make their government more fair. But the fact that government leaders have the responsibility to support our citizen. When you have a law like this in indiana that seems to legitimize discrimination, its important for everybody to speak out. Let me ask you about the luke here talks. I want to switch gears. Will there will be deal by tuesday . If not is the president willing to extend the deadline . Hes been very clear that the best way for us to prevent iran from obtaining a Nuclear Weapon is by pursuing diplomacy. To get iran to take steps voluntarily to shut down the path to nuclear repweapons. We want them to inspections. We want to prevent them from taning a Nuclear Weapon. At the same time, this requires iran to make commitments. We have been negotiateing about this xxiii more than a year. The president believes we should be able, to over the course of the last year, reach an agreement by the end of march if one is doable the. If not, no extension . We have been negotiating for more than a year. Its time for the iranians to send a clear signal to the International Community about whether or not theyre willing to make the serious commitments required and basically live up to their rhetoric that theyre not trying to acquire a nuclear rep. The speaker of the house took a tough shot at the president this week on the various Foreign Policy crises hes been facing. Heres what he had to say. The world is starving for american leadership. But america has an antiwar president. We have no strategy overarching strategy to deal with the growing terrorist threat. Your response . Well look george. I would simply say that if john boehner thinks u. S. Troops should be on the ground in yemen fighting or that we should reoccupy iraq or that the United States should bomb iran to keep them from having a Nuclear Weapon. If he feels that way, he should have the courage of his convictions to say so. The president is working on poll snis sis in the best interest of the United States. To launch air strikes against isil, to try to eliminate the extremist threats that exist in the middle east, these are steps that the president s taken consistent with the national interest. He does not believe it is in the best interest of the United States to commit ground troops. If we work with our International Partners we can do a better job of protecting the interests of the United States. Josh earnest, thank you very much. Thank you, george. If that doesnt happen were going to lose these neighborhoods and ultimately this city. I think there is a rezem resemblance there. Thank you for joining us. Thank you. Why are you running . Why are you the pest person for the job . What is jour answer . I believe our country is at a defining moment in our history. The American Dream is no longer true for the 80 of us working harder not getting further ahead. I have the experience after 15 years as executive, of governor of a state and mayor of a big city. To create a stronger economy. Sounds like you have honed that down. Back in 2007 you were one of Hillary Clintons earliest supporters. You called her the experienced leader america needs. You added this no one is better equipped to repair americas alliances abroad and address the urgent needs of our communities at home. No one is better equipped. Is that still true today . I believed for those times that she would be the best choice for us as a country. For those times. For those times. Not now . I believe there are new perspectives needed for us to solve the problems we face as americans and the problems we face as people on this planet. I believe that new perspective and new leadership is needed. More important than that, the two phrases im stuck with are the phrases people come up with and say to me in every state. We need people who know how the get things done. And we need new leadership. That sounds like row just aed for president. We need new perspectives. Leadership. Youre ready to challenge her, arent you . Think our country always benefits from new leadership and new perspectives. The presidency of the United States is not some crown to be passed between two families. It is an awesome and sacred trust. That to be earned and exercised on behalf of the American People. Those two families bush and clintnt . Right now, george you know, any two families but look in order for us to make an economy again where people with work hard and get ahead, we need a president on our side. A president willing to take on powerful wealthy, special interests to restore the american economy. That wherever you start, you can get ahead through your hard work. Thats not the economy we have today. 1 years in a row of wages deing. It doesnt have to be this way. And Hillary Clinton is not the candidate to take on the powerful special interests . I dont know. Will she represent a break with the failed policies of the past . I know for my own part is in maryland, we did the things that worked in order to attain the highest Median Income in the country. To be able to create more jobs than our neighbors in virginia and pennsylvania. We followed marriage equality. The dream act. Common sense rights for new americans like drivers licenses so they could take care of their families and reinforce this American Dream. You surprised me. I wasnt expecting you to be this direct in taking on former secretary of state Hillary Clinton this morning. Sounds like youre getting the reception in iowa thats convinced you you should go forward with this. Its not about being foror against any other candidate. Its about being forthe National Interests. We can become a strong country again. We to put National Interests ahead of special interests. Right now, its not a fair fight. Its as if wall street owns one party. And is trying to totally intimidate the other party. We need to stand up and put the National Interests first. If we do that we can restore our economy. What is the number one threat to america right now . How would you fix it . The number one responsible for the president is to protect the people of the United States of america. Would that there were only one. There are always threats. What is the most important . The greatest danger . The greatest danger that we face right now on a consistent basis in terms of manmade threats, is um is nuclear iran and related to that extremist violence. I dont think you can separate the two. I think they go together in terms of natural threats clearly, change. And we have to confront climate change. Nuclear iran is the answer striking deal with iran or not taking the deal that the president is serming for as Prime Minister netanyahu has argued. It remains to be seen doesnt it . In our state, we passed laws to drive the iranians to the negotiating table. You see 47 members of the senate writing the letter its a sad day for the United States. If you hate the president of the United States more than you distrust the ayatollah, its a sad day for america. 70 of people were polled back in october and 70 of people said you would not make a good. You were then behind clinton, biden, and warren. These are the people that know you best. We had just come off a Contentious Campaign there. The most important thing, george, is, if you look at the record of accomplishments in maryland, five years in a row, the number one Public Schools in the country. Reducing Violent Crime to 35year lows. History is full of times when the inevitable frontrunner is inevitable right up until he or she is no longer inevitable. I believe what people want especially this year is someone with proven executive experience. The ability to get things done, rather than putting their finger in the wind and looking for popularity. The ability to be honest with people. Laying out the choices for people. The announcement sounds like a formality. When should we expect it . Oh, i dont know. Im going the make a decision this spring. Governor omalley thank you for joining us. Thank you. Up next, the roundtable weighs in on ted cruz the First Official republican candidate. U had major thoroughfares and corridors that were just totally pitch black. Those things had to change. We wanted to restore our lighting system in the city. And theres secretary of state john kerry back in switzerland this morning. Clock ticking on the possible nuclear deal with ir ran. Clets lets check with ed royce, the. Kopg you heard them say earlier in the show that theyll only sign the deal they want. Do you belief a deal that you can support will be reached . A lot depends on whether iran backs down. They want the capps lifted after ten years. The second point, they dont want inspections of some of their military facilities where they have done this research. And lastly the iaea the International Inspectors have a list of 12 questions they want iran to answer on nuclear modeling explosive tests. 1,000 pages of documents about their program on a nuclear war head. So far, iran has only agreed to answer half of the first question. So, at this point, the french obviously, are upset about this. Congress is a little upset about the direction iran is pushing here. And, lastly the comments four days ago, by the ayatollah, that he was chanting death to america as the crowd were yelling death to america, this gives very real questions about why iran wont come clean with this evidence to the iaea ill count you in the skeptical camp. John bolton said a deal is not the option. Only military action like israels a 1981 attack on a dam husseins reactor in iraq can accomplish what is required. Do you believe we should be pushing for regime change . Clearly, we dont know yet if military action will be necessary or not. The point is in terms of regime change, long ago, it should have been our objective here with broadcasting into iran since twothirds of the people do not support that government there, so try to support the opposition to the regime. I would also say that the only reason were in the negotiation right now is because congress pushed for tough sanctions. I would say we would be in a much better position today if the legislation, Bipartisan Legislation that i and Elliott Engel passed to give the ayatollah a choice have been brought up in the senate instead of the administration sitting on that bill last year. So we are we are limiting the options to use alternatives to military force. Clearly, the president says at the end of the day, if theyre going to get a bomb, the president says hes going to use military force to prevent it. Our point was, if you use the type of sanctions regime we wanted to put in place, they would have had no choice but to capitulate. Thats the argument right now between congress and the white house on this. Mr. Your time. Lets go to the roundtable. Bill kristol fa Reed Jennifer granholm, and math withdrew dowd. Fareed, let me begin with you. Were fighting on the same side as iran against were trying to get Nuclear Restrictions with them in switzerland. In some places, you have a greater enemy like isis, should not be surprising. The entire middle east has become fragile and unstable. Every regime has cracked. Beneath the regime there was nothing. There was no country. That people have withdrawn to their oldest identities. Nobody is fighting and dig for iraq, syria, libya. Theyre fighting and dying because theyre shia kurds. This deal with iran could be a gamechanger. Could transform the middle east. Do you buy that . I think it certainly would help. What is the alternative . The alternative to the deal is either a major escalation militarily. It would not be like the iraq strike. It would take weeks and weeks of bombing. The iranians would respond in all the countries theyre active. Or you have a situation, no deal, have sanctions. But the iranians went from 150 centrifuges to 20,000 under sanctions. You disaagree with fareed . Prime pin ster netanyahu is more moderate than i am. Its a terrible deal. It will legitimate iran. The middle east is on fire. Deal with iran that in effect allows them to be Nuclear Threshold safe. That doesnt make them pay any price for what theyve done in the past. President obama himself said you cant allow that facileity to fupgs. It would be a omalley, matthew dowd. It sure sounded like Hillary Clinton has her first challenger, close to official challenger in the race now. Well finally it made sense to me that somebody has finally having an edge in their conversation as a democrat related to Hillary Clinton. To me i still think Hillary Clinton is extremely vulnerable in this country right now. Whether its the general election or the primary. Everything over the last two ore three weeks, watching the nature of her campaign and response to me would encourage somebody like Martin Omalley or Elizabeth Warren to see if they can beat her. She sea says she welcomes a primary. Is that like inviting your uncle over when you dont really want him to come . Martin omalley is a nice guy. He might make a nice member of a president clinton administration, so me better watch. I think he and anybody else she would welcome into the mix. That would be healthy. I think ultimately shell be the next president. You heard the chrisbill kristol, about the two families trading the presidency back and forth. The only way to not have a bushclinton race in 2016 is to deny one or both of them the nomination. Martin omalley worked for gary hart in 1983. He was nowhere at this point. Hart got 17 of the vote or something in what against mondales 50. He won New Hampshire and almost beat mondale. I think someone like omalley could have a shot. You do see this feeling against dynasties bubbling up. Is it something people vote on . I think the really difficult part for hillary, more than the dynasty, is its tough for a party to get a third term in the white house. When was the last one . It was bush sr. After reagan. Before that it was fdr after himself. Before that hoover after coolidge. You have to run as of continuity. Its tough for Hillary Clinton to be the candidate of continuity after barack obama. She has a great case to make for continuity. With respect to economic policy. Will she run that way . Ment i i assume she will. Zinties suggest generational passing down. Shes not a generation where her father is handing this down. Shes a woman. The role has changed . I think its changed. There is a problem with dynasties in that if people think youre going to inherit it and not earn it. The other problem with dines, is this a forwardlooking campaign . For many people watching whats developed over the last six months, it feels like were thrown back to the 1990s. I feel thats true with jeb. And for Hillary Clinton. 20 years. I think the candidates going to win in 2016 has to be somebody that says all thats in the past. Im Going Forward in the future. I think thats ultimately her problem. Ted cruz, the First Official kptd, seemed like he had a pretty good launch. He did. I think hes consistently underrated. I think that whole generation, walker, rubio, cruz jindal are underrated. I spoke to someone this week who saw rubio who said he reminded me of bill clinton in 2002. Very able. Not quite as prominent nationally. I think they have a real shot. And fareed we heard jennifer talk about Hillary Clinton being a candidate of cont theyre wrong in a political term. Theres no question that the publics view of the middle east is this is one unholy mess. Theyre all crazy. Theyll suck us dry. Stay out. Bill kristols father once wrote in the 1965 i think, the job of conservatives in those days was to explain to the American People why theyre right and american intellect actuals why theyre wrong. The American People dont like to see america humiliated around the world. They know the middle east in flames is dangerous to us. I disagree. Ground troops in syria and iraq are not something anyone would support. It is an unholy mess thanks to the fact that we have toetly withdrawn. I think our politics in this country today is chaotic. Republicans are thinking that the Prime Minister of israel should make our Foreign Policy. The Obama Administration doesnt trust republicans enough to tell them whats in the deal. We have a few seconds left. Bottom line, jennifer is 2016 a National Security election or economy . I think what americans are most concerned about, the economy always has come out number one. This year under the Pew Charitable trust, terrorism was number one. If you have a candidate strong against terrorism and extremists, as long as that concern is taken care of with somebody who has been there and uses the fight, that concern will be addressed. Have to take a quick break. Thanks to the roundtable. Fareed will be back to discuss hz new book after this. I promise you, folks can make a lot more potentially with skilled manufacturing or the trades than they might with an art history degree. That line from president obama represents the kind of thing Fareed Zakaria is trying to discuss in his new book in defense of a liberal education. You make the point. The president ended up having to apologize for that by the way. He reflects there a bipartisan consensus in h washington that is dangerous and unamerican. What did you mean . Its always true gnat in europe education is much more skilled based. In america we took the view no its important to build broad, general skill, critical thinking. Because, our economy has always moved very fast. Its changed. Your first job is never the same as your fit job. I think the world today favors that kind of american liberal education. Science and technology has to be part of it. So does english, so does history. You grew up in india. A lot of rote learning. You were drawn to the idea of a liberal education in america. I fell in love with the idea of being able to take physics and poetry. Part of it is i think people dont understand, so much of what you do in life is critical thinking. The stuff you learn specifically in a trade is obsolete five years, six years later. The ability to learn. The ability to get passionate about something is not. Thats why jeff bezos, the founder of amazon says i want my Senior Executives to write sixpage singlespace memos to me. If you have to write down an argument, there cant be logical gaps. What do you say to parents and students saddled with this huge debt. We know how Expensive College can be. I have to be sure to train for a job . The data shows while engineering and technically trained students start out with a slight advantage, it evens out over time. They have to remember their son or daughter is going to be good at the thing he or she can be passionate about. The thing he or she can work hard at. Love. Thats the most important thing. We all know this. If you love your work it doesnt feel like work. So push them to be passionate. To work hard. Obviously, you have to get lucky. Thats true even if youre an engineer. Any parent should read this book. Thank yo and we end today with good new. The pentagon did not release any names of Service Members killed in afghanistan this week. Facebook discovered an error in their senti meter from last weeks show. Ted cruise had the most interactions. Imll see you tomorrow on gma. Policing the police when their weapon is discharged.
