[ cheers and applause ] so youre here on a wonderful night. I dont know if you saw this last night, in a prime time address, President Trump nominated neil gorsuch to the vacant seat on the Supreme Court, and asked this question to the assembled press. So was that a surprise . Seth which brings us to a segment we call a couple things. [ cheers and applause ] first thing, so, was that a surprise . I dont know how to tell you this, mr. President , but no. 12 days into your presidency, the part of me that can be surprised is dead. [ light laughter ] if you had nominated a rabid bat in a judicial robe, i would have said that tracks. Second thing is, everyone has pointed out, you did this like a reality show. These decisions are important. Americans only like reality shows because they have nothing to do with reality. No one would enjoy the bachelor if it had realworld consequences. Ooh, if he gives her the rose, abortions will be illegal. [ light laughter ] third thing, it must suck to be Merrick Garland today. He was picked by obama and that sat on the sideline for an entire year. This is like the final scene of rudy, but instead of putting him in the game, the coach just points at him, and says rudy, go [ bleep ] yourself. [ laughter and applause ] fourth thing, at least with gorsuch, trump picked an expert in his field. You may not like his positions, but he went to law school and is currently a judge. Meanwhile, rick perry probably thinks the secretary of energys in charge of making sure the white house smoke alarms have fresh batteries. [ light laughter ] fifth thing, anyone who was hoping for a woman or a person of color, was kidding themselves. It was always gonna be a white guy. An when you dont have a profile picture yet. [ laughter and applause ] next next to neil gorsuch, Merrick Garland looks like soul brother number one. Side thing, does anyone have eyes on Ruth Bader Ginsberg right now . And if so, can you put her in one of those protective sleeves people use for rare baseball cards . This is very important. Final thing, this is a great day for conservatives who didnt like trump, but supported him for the very reason that he would pick a Supreme Court justice to their liking. Basically you ate [ bleep ] for the last two years, but today, you crapped out a diamond. But heres the bad news, im pretty sure [ bleep ] is back on the menu tomorrow. [ light laughter ] as to the role trump perceives, for gorsuch, lets hear it in his own words. Today i am keeping another promise, to the american people. By nominating judge neil gorsuch to be of the United States Supreme Court, to be of the United States Supreme Court. [ laughter ] seth sorry, i put you on the spot. You can do better, im sure. Uh, try again . I promise to select someone who respects our laws, and is representative of our constitution, and who loves our constitution and someone who will interpret them as written. Seth them . [ light laughter ] how many constitutions does he think we have . [ laughter ] theres one for the muslims, one for the hispanics. Theres one for me, thats the best one. And in honor of that, donald trump gave a speech at an event. There he is. The speech has been widely criticized. But some people enjoyed it. Here to talk about it, please welcome one of our writers, amber ruffin. [ cheers and applause ] seth, i stand before you a changed woman. Now i heard all the criticisms. People said his speech was awkward and disconnected, but i think you just have to know how to listen to it, really listen to it, and you will see it rivals the famous i have a dream speech. [ throat clearing ] during this month we honor the tremendous history of africanamericans throughout our country, throughout the world, if you really think about it, right . Think about it. [ light laughter ] and their story is one of unimaginable sacrifice, hard work, and faith in america. Now who knows more about hard work than donald trump . [ light laughter ] ive gotten a real glimpse, during the campaign. Id go around with ben carson [ light laughter ] to a lot of different places, i wasnt so familiar with. [ light laughter ] now, hes talkin about where like black people live. Theyre incredible people. And i want to thank ben carson,. Who is also black. [ light laughter ] i know its hard to tell. Who is going to be heading up hud. You read all about dr. Martin luther king a week ago, when somebody said i took the statue out of my office. Now heres where we take a quick break from black history. It turned out that that was fake news, fake news. Now this is where he gets a little sidetracked, and starts complaining about the media. But they said the statue, the bust of Martin Luther king, was taken out of the office, and it was never even touched. So i think it was a disgrace. But thats the way the press is. Very unfortunate. Almost as unfortunate as the history of black america. What were we talking about . [ light laughter ] i am very proud now that we have a museum on the national mall, where people can learn about reverend king. And hes back to black history. So many other things. Of somebody whos done an amazing job, and is being recognized more and more i noticed. [ light laughter ] now here we learn, he likes Frederick Douglass so much that he thinks hes still alive. [ laughter ] i think thats great. Harriet tubman, rosa parks, and millions more black americans, who made america what it is today. And paris. Now, i dont know who paris is, but here he starts talking about someone named paris. Has done an amazing job in a very hostile cnn community. Hes all by himself, youll have seven people and paris. [ light laughter ] and ill take paris over the seven dwarves . [ light laughter ] but i dont watch cnn, so i dont get to see you as much as i used to. I dont like watching fake news, but fox has treated me very nice. Wherever fox is, thank you. Hes talking about jamie foxx there. I want to thank my Television Star over here, omarosas actually a very nice person, nobody knows that. [ laughter ] what better way to celebrate black History Month, than by throwing some shade. So, i want to thank everyone for being here. Its black History Month and no one knows more about [ cheers and applause ] more about, more about black History Month than president donald [ bleh ] i cant say it, i cant say it. Seth thank you so much for being here, buddy. Yeah. Seth our first guest stars as anastasia steele, in the 50 shades darker. It opens in theaters everywhere on february 10th. Lets take a look. Where is everyone . You know, its a little early. Your comments on boys fox were interesting. Im not usually into political thrillers. What will you have, chris . Seth please welcome back to the show, our friend, Dakota Johnson, everybody. [cheers and applause] how are you . Im good. How are you . Seth good. Its nice to have you back. Im wonderful. Thank you for asking. This is very exciting. This film is a sequel, to a very popular first film, very popular books. Yeah. Seth but its an erotic subject matter, dakota. It is . Seth it is. Its very titillating, this film. [ light laughter ] and the film that proceeded it. But you have titillating. Seth titillating. I know its a terrible word. But it is i did use it correctly. But you have is it weird because these obviously these films are very adult subject mattered is it strange when like younger fans come up to you and say theyre a fan . Well, yeah, yes, i mean im often like, really . But i recently was in a starbucks, getting some coffee. [ light laughter ] seth yeah. Getting some easy listening cds. As you do. [ laughter ] and a kid came up. He was probably 14 or 15, he was like hey, can i get a picture and hes like holding the phone out like this, and he says, i actually dont know who you are, but my mom is over there and shes like freaking out. And i look over and this woman is just like face down on the table. [ laughter ] cant make eye contact with me. Seth the only way to bring my mother back to life is a photo of you. Yeah, send your son into the fire. Seth yeah, also, it is that great thing when people feel like they want they need to tell you, cause ive had that happen before, where people all they want a picture but they also want to let you know they dont know who you are. Yeah, theyre like, i actually dont care, but can i, like, get a picture with you . Seth someone else got a picture and now i want one but i dont ill probably never look at it. And as soon as this is over im going to delete it for the storage space. Yeah. Seth i did want to take up your time and make you feel bad. Yeah, and i go home and cry. Seth yeah, it like ruins the week. So this because this film has such a, you know from these very popular books, it seems like when you do press, i found anything you say its a disaster. Seth well, its not a disaster but anythinu like people, you can give people very click baitey headlines, i feel like. Based on any answer you give. Its not your fault. No. It is truly categorically impossible for me to get it right. Seth to talk about this film in a way where its just a boring thing. When im not like widely taken out context. Seth whats it like how whats an example of how you get taken out of context . Well, i mean, the other day i had someone ask me what my favorite sex toy was. Seth yeah. Which is like, inappropriate. Seth yeah. [ laughter ] and i was like, thats an inappropriate question. Also, if i answer it i cant answer it the right way i also cant if i say like, i said i dont have one. Lets move on. But then the headline was like, she doesnt have one favorite. [ laughter ] so its like i cant win. Its like i either, i hate sex toys so why am i doing this movie, or i love them and im a seth you should just give an answer just say one that doesnt exist, just be like the scrambler. Yeah. [ laughter ] seth and they say, they dont know what they scrambler is, be like you should find out. Its going to change your life. Yeah. [ laughter ] seems masks. Ive seen masks in the posters for this film. Yeah. Seth like sexy masks. Yeah. Not like gimp masks. [ laughter ] seth no. Not no. Seth no not no, but like the masks are do you find the masks alluring. Is that something alluring . Seth yeah like to wear. If i answer this question, its going to be like, she loves masks. Seth you are included with the gimp mask characters. I know. Seth the headlines going to be, Dakota Johnson has a favorite mask. You wont believe what it is. I know. Truly, its like if i were playing a dental hygienist, would the questions would be like seth do you floss . Do you love peoples teeth . Do you love peoples mouths . Seth is it weird now, like when you floss, do you always think about the movie . [ laughter ] yeah. Seth you do so much press about this movie, and as evidenced by everything thats happened in the last five minutes. It does its an awkward movie to talk about. Do you feel like, especially like, i think for people who dont know, when you do a press junket, there will be a day when you talk to 50 different reporters, who each come in, five minutes at a time, can you sometimes sense that they are awkward talking about this movie . Yes. Seth yeah. [ light laughter ] they can also, probably sense that im, that their awkwardness makes me awkward. Seth and then its a big old thing. We all know what its about. Seth yeah. I guess thats true, why are they even asking you about it. You should be like, just watch it. Yeah, i know, why am i even here . Seth a complete waste of bye. Seth yeah. [ laughter ] but i wanted to ask you this, because it seems like americans, obviously, we have our hangups about sex. Do you this is a international film, like its in sometimes when you talk to reporters from other countries like, are european people more easy to talk to about . Sometimes, yeah. Well, but their french are like seth this movie is about the first date . [ laughter ] this is a normal first date between two people . You were friends before, and afterwards are still friends . Theyre like typical. Seth these are things that happen. This is not a big deal. This is bedroom. These things happen. Yeah. Germans are interesting. Seth yeah, oh really . Yeah. Germans are interesting . Interesting about it. Seth yeah. I dont know. Its, this is also one of those moments where what i say is seth oh, right yeah. You dont want to talk big, like der spiegel headline about german sex lives. Yeah. Seth i saw we were talking about this back stage. I feel like people i want everybody to go home and watch it because it was so fascinating. You did a video for vanity fair. Yeah. Ve but it was your hidden talent. Vanity fair asked you what your hidden talent was. Yeah. Seth do you want to tell everybody what your hidden talent was . Ill tell them if you dont want to. Its going to get out. Its apparently already out. I can, like, put things in the gap in my teeth. [ laughter ] seth in your front teeth and it was fantastic because i saw this, and i thought, well this isnt going to be fun to watch, but then it really was because there were you got a credit card in there. [ light laughter ] i got like a stack of 100 bills in there. Seth you got i believe, 1100 worth of 100 bills. I sure did. [ light laughter ] seth thats fantastic. Have you ever tried to put that much money between your teeth before . No, that was my first attempt. Have you got any money . Seth no, i dont. I dont feel like this is terrible. I definitely should have had something, but yeah i dont think anything here, can you fit this book . [ laughter ] you want to try and fit kennys book in your teeth . So you got started your first film, you come, your parents are in this business, your first film you played your mothers daughter when you were 9. Yeah. In a film that my stepfather was directing. So, i didnt have to really work hard to get the job. Seth okay, gotcha. Did you want the job . Were you excited about it . Yeah, i did. I always wanted to be a part of it, i always wanted to like play one of the kids if there was a kid in the movie. Seth and was it fun then, or it stressful, like with working with your parents like that. It was fun. It was mostly fun because i got to work with a dialect coach because i had to be southern. Seth okay. Was that so how was your southern accent . Do you think it held up well . Im pretty sure it was perfect. [ laughter ] seth im so sorry. Im not sure. Seth yeah, thats right. Everybody go home and rent crazy in alabama, and well talk about it tomorrow. Seth yeah, next time youre here well bring back the same audience and ask them all. [cheers and applause] seth and i promise also, next time youre here im going that can fit between your front teeth. I feel so unprepared. This was terrible of me. I know i guess i. Do you have drawers back there . Whats in them . [ light laughter ] seth a spoon . [ laughter ] where has this been . Seth pudding. No. Seth no you cant do it . All right, well, this is a disappointment. [ light laughter ] you can keep the spoon though. Last time you were here you took a pencil, this time you take a spoon. Yeah, i can do this i think. Have to make it kind of sticky. Cant you balance a spoon on your nose . Seth well, you havent done it yet, so stop shaming me. My nose was just powdered. Seth i have a feeling i have a lot more nose. [ laughter ] its not going to work. Seth its going to work. I 100 guarantee this oi [ laughter ] [ cheers and applause ] weve got to take this on the road. Yeah. Great, thanks for the emmy nomination, man. Thats great. Seth you didnt know you were emmy nominated until i said that . I think thats not true but i really appreciate seth you really dont think thats true . No, i think its not seth maybe they just nominated you while you were backstage. They might have. They nominated for my work in 50 shades darker. Seth you were you were one of the guys with the masks. I was. Seth yeah. I was straightlaced newsman with a sadomasochistic streak. [ light laughter ] seth there you go you were fantastic. You were fantastic in that, so seth congratulations on sunday today. This is sort of a new direction for you. You got a show, its on sunday mornings and its some news, and its also some more indepth interviews. Do you enjoy that part having time to interview people . Yeah, thats the best part of it. Its what you do here. Heres an hour of network time. They gave you an hour of network time, theyll give anyone an hour of network. Seth theyll give anybody an hour, yeah. Clearly, they gave me an hour on sunday mornings and yeah, i get to do like seven to eight minute interviews, which in the News Business where youre used to like three minutes of a interview. Seth yeah. Its awesome. So, its fun. Seth you i was very jealous of this. You got to interview ice cube. I did. Seth and you got to drive around in a 64 impala, which was really yeah. I did. As you know, part of the idea of the show is to identify your heroes and interview them. Seth yeah, thats the best part. Like find them and hang out with them sometime. Seth yep, 100 . So yes, i interviewed ice cube, we rented a 64 impala from some guy in jersey and we found him online somewhere. And i just drove ice it was just the two of us. Seth yeah. There were no like security or handlers, i was like, i could drive ice cube anywhere i want right now. [ laughter ] seth yeah. I could drive ice cube across the country right now. And im not sure they would stop us. Seth thatd be great. Yeah. Seth just like helicopter news coppers like, willie geist still going Cross Country with ice cube. [ laughter ] and ice cube is like, is this going anywhere . I thought this was an interview . Seth you also its fun in be able to have a question ready that can throw a subject, but you had Anna Kendrick on, who is a fantastic guest, a fantastic person. And you she had talked about getting interviewed in her book. She did. So Anna Kendrick wrote she wrote a memoir, and in the book, i think she forgot she wrote this part of the book, but i actually read the book. And it said, at one point she said, when im interviewed by a journalist to calm my nerves, i picture them having sex. So like if she was sitting here, which she has been. Seth right. Shes picturing you having sex, just so you know. Seth okay, good. So seth the weird thing is, in order to calm my nerves, i always am picturing myself having sex. [ laughter ] is that calming actually, or depressing . Seth i i have very [ audience oohs ] trust me, the way i do it is very calm. [ light laughter ] you can barely tell its happening. [ light laughter ] so i said to her she had no idea it was coming, i opened the book to like page 183 in the back of the book. In the book where you say you picture people interviewing you having sex. And she got bright red, buried her hands at her face, and i read her the passage, and she said, okay, fine, im picturing you having sex right now. [ laughter ] okay . What do you want from me. And then i tried to employ that in my job but in politics, its a little different. Seth yeah. Cause when youre interviewing chuck schumer, its not as great. [ light laughter ] seth thats not a way to settle yourself down. No, its not a great visual, no. Seth we talked about this because we both grew up in the suburbs and now we are raising kids here in the city. Youve got two now, right . Ive got two, yep. Seth and is it is it strange for you making that transition . My sons too young to know what its like to have a city kid. But whats it like raising a city kid . Youll find out. I have a 9yearold and a 7yearold, and the things that happen in new york city or any city just Walking Around day to day would be the biggest thing that happened in your childhood, like a defining moment in your childhood. Literally like, three days ago, i walk down the street with my son, whos 7 years old, always runs around ahead of me. And, yno some people floating around, strange people you dont know. Guy walks up to him, screams at my 7yearold son whos that tall, im a swashbuckler [ laughter ] and i was like, oh, my god, this is going to be horrifying. Seth yeah, its tramatic. Its going to be scarring forever. And he looked at my son, george, 7 years old, points at him and goes, ha, ha, ha. I like this guy. I like this guy. And i thought to my and the guy walked away. And everybody was fine. It was harmless. And i thought to myself, where i grew up in the suburbs, if that happened, they would have called in the national guard. Seth yeah. [ light laughter ] like, there would have been a town council hearing, you have to find the seth we got to get rid of the swashbucklers exactly, exactly. Seth theyre ruining this town this was just like a step on the way to karate class. Seth i remember walking leaving this building once and there was a kid probably about that age who had sneakers that had like roller skates on the bottom. Yeah, yeah. Seth he just wheeled by me cooler at 8 years old than im ever been or going to be. Its so true. Its so true. Theyre taking the subway to school when theyre 8 years old. Seth what, no i was with my mom everywhere, until i was 18. Seth theyre were the older they the older they get, the more lame they think were going to think we are. Theyre like, whered you grow up . Oh, totally, totally. My son and i also, he just got a new baseball glove, and because its new york, theres nowhere to like have a catch. Seth right. We had the ideallic like, backyard, hey, son, you want to have a catch . Were literally standing in the hallway of our building, in front of the elevator, having a catch last night. [ light laughter ] the elevator opens, the baseball whizzes by some guys head. Its just a weird place to grow up but the kids dont know any different. Seth no, thats the great thing. Theyre like, this is normal. Playing catch in the hallway in front of the elevator. Seth your dad was also in news. Yeah. Seth you had that as a background. Yeah. Seth you guys wrote a book together. We did. Seth and it was i guess that was probably because most people dont work with their dad. That must have been the first time you worked with him. Yeah, it was cool. We wrote a book a couple years called good talk, dad. My dad works at cbs, he was on sunday mornings, still is for like 30 years and we got to put, like, you know, our favorite stories of our life down together in print, in a book, my son can read about us for the rest of his life and my daughter, of course. Seth and your dad is obviously a very smart guy, but theres a great story in your book about he did not pick the best camp for you when you were 12 years old. No, thats a good point. He went to the camp expo at the Javits Center over here, yeah, you know how that is. [ light laughter ] seth this i guess is what people did before the internet, you had to go to a expo. Right, exactly, youd go to expo and like walk the halls, like, that looks good that brochure looks good, well go there. So he found one, which i learned later was like a downmarket camp. Seth uhhuh. The point was, it was cheap. And he was like, youre going to this camp in new hampshire, where youre from. And i got there as a 12 year old, and it was fine, and i thought we going to go identify leaves and go canoeing. And what wasnt in the fine print, was that the counselors at the camp were part of a program where juvenile delinquents were being rehabilitated. [ laughter ] so they had released kids from juvie and like let them be the counselors at this camp. So i kid you not, seth, like they were having knife fights at night. [ laughter ] slashing tires. One of them was sleeping with the nurse, so never get into the pillbox because the door was always locked. And so my dad was like, you know what, though, we got a great deal. We got a great deal. [ light laughter ] i learned a lot that summer. Seth you learned a lot and by the way not about leaves. Seth that is to be a suburban, you couldnt you didnt grow up in new york city you had to go to a place a camp like that. Toughened me up a little bit, yeah. Seth fantastic, well it worked out. Thanks for being here, congrats on the show. Thanks, man. Great to see you. Seth always a pleasure to see you buddy.
