On friday morning at 6 15, Montgomery County police say 64yearold Timothy Holden was traveling in the eastbound lane when the crash happened. The medical examiner in roanoke released a report on their deaths. Reporter Alison Parker and her photographer, adam ward, were both shot at least twice. They were hit in the head and torso. Parker was shot first. The 24yearolds parents held a News Conference just a short time ago. Her father says he hopes her death will help change gun laws. He described how she will be remembered. She lived with, you know her life was her life was full of joy. And she always saw the best in people. And she touched people, so many people and why they loved her. Parkers dad says they are planning to honor her life on monday with a celebration of life ceremony. It will be just for family and friends. And we are also hearing from the witness to those murders, that woman who survived the shooting, vicki gardner. She is now in Good Condition at a hospital and her family says she remembers dodging bullets. She was being interviewed when the shooting happened. She saw the reporter and cameraman being shot and remembers falling to the ground and being shot in the back. She says she is lucky to be alive. Former president george w. Bush is in new orleans today to mark nearly ten years since Hurricane Katrina hit. President bush took a lot of heat in his office for his handling of the disaster today, his focus is on positive changes, including education. Chris lawrence is live with the state of schools in the crescent city. Chris . Reporter yeah, erika, former president bush visited a Charter School today here in new orleans and thats not hard to do, because virtually every school in new orleans is now a Charter School. But we talked to some of the students who say they are still able to talk about some of the disruption that the hurricane did to their education. I was in a transition of, like, like transitioning to these schools, like back and forth. It wasnt helpful. Reporter before the storm hit, new orleans was one of the Worst School Districts in the entire country. After the storm, they blew it up, fired almost all of the Public School employees and turned the system over to charter. Today, 90 of the schools in the city are Charter Schools and propope nents of that say it has made a huge difference. For instance, the Graduation Rate for young black males in new orleans is now about 65 . Compare that to the District Of Columbia a Graduation Rate for young black males less than half. Now, there is some controversy because some parents say that means their Neighborhood School has not reopened and they have been slow to address those needs. We talked to one principal at a charter who says its working. Yes, there will be pros and cons, yes, Charter Schools have been under attack, yes, Charter Schools are outperforming other schools. We now know the gender of the surviving panda cub and its paternity. Zookeepers say its thriving. News4s Megan Mcgrath was there for the big announcement. [ drumroll ] the panda cub is male. And his father is tian tian. Reporter the mystery is over, tian tian, mei xiangs longtime mate is the father of the new baby panda, a baby boy. Mei xiang was oblivious to all the speculation and excitement surrounding the announcement. She was taking care of her little cub inside the panda house but zoo visitors are thrilled. Thats awesome. Familys together. Thats terrific. And a boy. A great great for the mom, great for the dad. Baby boy. Then he will be the father eventually. So, its all good. Reporter mei xiang gave birth to twins back on august 22nd. One of the cubs died just days later, but the surviving cub is doing well. Zoo Officials Say mei xiang is a good mother, fiercely attending to the cub. She left his side briefly the first time today and the cub is thriving, making lots of noise. It is gaining weight, which is a good thing, so we know that its nursing successfully and its growing and again, its just listening to that voice. Reporter good news following the death of the twin earlier this week. Initial findings of a necropsy, an animal autopsy, indicate that the cub died as a result of food material getting into the lungs. It is a foreign material. Our intestinal tract is set up to handle breaking that down. Our lungs are only meant to take in air. Reporter panda that died was also a boy and also the offspring of tian tian. That cub was bottle and tube fed and thats likely how the food got into his lungs. Zoo Officials Say they have no regrets. The coast guard is also on alert, just issuing an alert that we have been made aware of. Also, here in the city of Fort Lauderdale, as a safety precaution right now, city crews are placing bar glade areas prone to flooding. In addition, crews have been clearing storm trains and removing debris, especially here on the beach. A hurricane hasnt hit florida in ten years. The latest forecast shows erika will be a Tropical Storm when it makes landfall and that expected late sunday. Officials here in different city including Fort Lauderdale, rehn kourming people to have a plan in place. Of course, south florida has a lot of tourists. I just spoke to some tourists from brazil and they told me, you know, they are checking the internet, looking at different local News Agencies to basically monitor the situation so its definitely the discourse around here, we are meeting weekenhead weekend. Of course, you heard in the report, south of florida, southern florida, around sunday morning, i do think as early as late morning sunday, they could be dealing with some Tropical Stormforce winds, say around 40, 50 miles an hour and for a spell through sunday, the system drives up through florida, quite a bit of rain. Impact here, that system will take some time. Going to start falling apart good but i think there is a chance locally, midweek, maybe wednesday, thursday, we could see rough surf around here. It all depends on the track and there still is quite a bit of uncertainty. It still could change. As far as weather out there today, it was another great day for us with low humidity. Pleasant conditions, the story for the weekend it will get sticky, especially on sunday, then next week, uncomfortable. I like it never gets terribly oppressive around here. Not going to be like the last batch of backtoback 90s that we had around the area. Not talking about that high but could have a day or two where we top out brief late 95 degrees. Hundreds turned out for a vigil today on the campus of Savannah State university in georgia. They are in mourning and trying to regroup after a student was shot and killed overnight on campus. Today, the school released more information about the victim, christopher starks, who was a junior from the atlanta area. Somebody shot him in the cafeteria of the Student Union building. He died later at the hospital. Students said that it all started with a fight. Parents send kids to college thinking they are safe and this happens out of no were, it is really unacceptable. He were in hiking in a remote area last week when his dad was hurt by a falling boulder and suffered a broken arm and compound fracture on his leg.
