Family and their housekeeper is back in court. Prosecutors detail new dna evidence against their prime suspect, daron wint, but the case is not going to trial anytime soon. Meagan fitzgerald joins us live from d. C. Superior court with more on what happened in the court today. You may recall that it was dna taken from pizza crust that led police to the prime suspect in the first place. Today in court, we learned they took hundreds of swabs and out of all of those, five proved positive matches to daron wints dna. It has been nearly a year and a half since two parents, their 10yearold son and housekeeper were tortures for hours and then killed before investigators say daron wint set the house on fire and took off in one of the prosecutors urged the judge to set a trial date, but the defense argued that they need more time to test the hundreds of swabs taken from the mansion. The judge agreed with the defense, so yet again, a trial date for wint is still unknown. Now, the judge set a status hearing date for february 3rd. At that point, its possible that we may learn of a trial date, but prosecutors tell us coming up at 5 00, we talk to a homicide detective who tells us just how critical the dna evidence is and whether the defense is likely doing with the extra time they have. I talked to one woman who has lived here for 40 years looking at getting 40 years of stuff out of her condo thats paid for in three days. It was decided by a judge that it just was not enough time. Maryland senator asked for an extension for these people. Theyre going to have another week before they have to leave. And then theres going to be another meeting in court to decide whats going to happen with these we watched people move precious items in the dark, those who decided theyre going to stay on their road to get out of the condominiums before its too late. We talked with a number of residents who say they needed this additional time because they still havent found somewhere else to go and they are not ready to leave just yet. What was the reaction when you heard the judge saying you all can stay for the next week . That was great. It took a lot of pressure off of get out of here day, and i still havent found a place. We now continue our focus on Domestic Violence this week as we work to keep you safe at home. Many efforts to stop Domestic Violence focus on the survivors. Today, though, we concentrate on the perpetrators. Joining us now is mandrel burks, cohost of a weekly talk show devoted to Domestic Violence and also the former executive director of the family crisis at the bottom of the screen in case you need to call right now for help. Dealing with and addressing the perpetrators issues does a lot more than just help the survivor, doesnt it . Absolutely. We cannot lean on one side of the issue if we want to address the problem. We have to address the entire family, so we have to address the perpetrators directly. We have to get an understanding or highlight programs for th of how they became an abuser. Understanding the root cause of it. Lets take a look at some statistics here. 1 out of every 15 children is exposed to intimate Domestic Violence every year, and 90 of those children are eyewitnesses to this violence. If Domestic Violence is a learned behavior, these numbers are really eye opening, arent they . Absolutely. We know for a fact once the child witnesses a violent emulate that parents behavior. Thats why we have to attack the whole problem in a comprehensive effort so that child does not become an abuser. Not just children who might repeat learned behavior, but to stop the perpetrator from moving on to another relationship and abusing another person. Absolute le. Thats why we want to make sure that we address the entire issue. We address the perpetrators issue. Letting them know, look, there are programs out here for you. You can become a better person and hopefully become a great individual and a healthy relationship. We know that perpetrators can be male or female. But when it comes to dealing with them, do you deal with do law enforcement, do treatment programs deal with them any differently . No, the process is still the same. The male has a right to go to particular woman who could be an aggressor could either serve time, could be ordered through abuser intervention counseling session. So the same applies. Where do perpetrators go for help . We would highly recommend they go to the family justice center. A lot of time, in creating the program, it houses over 19 Service Providers in one location. We told you the feds rasted martin and found the equivalent of hundreds of millions of pages of electronic documents stashed in his home. They said, quote, a substantial portion of the material is believed to be classified. Martin was a contractor at the security clearance for nearly 30 years, investigators say.
