Mark joins us now this is the neighborhood where stephanie goodlow lived just a few blocks from the potomac avenue metro station. Early saturday morning her former boyfriend went into her home and shot her to death in her bedroom. The two were scheduled to be in court today. Stephanie goodlow is the latest person to lose their life to Domestic Violence in the district, but shes far from the only Domestic Violence victim. Its every day and its all day. Reporter it was about 1 30 saturday morning on kentucky avenue southeast. 49yearold Donald Harrison went into stephanie goodlows home and shot her to death. She told the court hairston had come to her home on june 4th and pounded on her door several times and slashed her by all accounts, goodlow did everything she could to protect herself once she realized her former boyfriend was becoming violent. She called police. She even kept a log of all the threatening calls and text messages. Its completely heartbreaking and unfortunate. I can see how discouraging it can be because families who actually make the effort to speak up, Say Something and do something, and then Something Like this happens. The issue of access to assault weapons will not go before the u. S. Supreme court. The timing is interesting because today the justices declined to hear a challenge to an assault weapons ban that is in place in the state of connecticut. Pete williams is here to explain this to us. Does this have any kind of impact on the everyone is now saying after this assault in orlando, the massacre, is this going to have an impact across the country . It is the second time the Supreme Court has declined to take up challenge to assault weapons ban. Last december they didnt take a case on an assault weapons ban in highland park, a suburb of chicago. Since 2008 in the landmark Supreme Court decision from here in the district that said theres an individual right to have a gun at home for selfdefense, the Supreme Court has consistently refused to take up any challenges to local gun restrictions. This was a challenge to t connecticut law that was passed in 2013 right a rampage at sandy hook elementary. The state toughed its assault weapons ban. It restricts these rifles, the ar15 style rifles, that can handle large capacity ammunition magazines. The challenge that came to the Supreme Court was filed by some connecticut residents and some progun groups. What they said is it might have a marginal effect on gun violence, but that would be a matter of simple arithmetic. The proponents of the law said these are weapons that have been used disproportionately in Mass Shootings, that theyre designed to be killing machines in essence. They appealed to the Supreme Court, but the justices said again they wouldnt take the case. Close to home, what does that mean for the districts gun laws . Not much.
