Live from center city in philadelphia. This is fox 29 news at 10 00. Former philadelphia mayor, frank rizzo, the target of vandals again. This time, it is a mural of him in south philadelphia. But first tonight, lets check in on your fox 29 weather authority. Here is a live look at the ben franklin parkway, some showers are moving through parts of our area, right now. Those storms, led to some severe thunderstorm warnings earlier tonight. Thank you for joining us, im joyce evans. Im dawn timoney. Guys, we had showers, storms, roll through parts of berks, Lancaster County at times, severe thunderstorm warnings were issued, but just like we thought was going to happen. Once the line reached into the legion it, broke apart. So at this point, we just start dealing with isolated showers, maybe a rumble every thunder here and there, up toward carbon, monroe county, toward mount pocono, down into rich lands. Watching that through the next few hours, isolated showers possible, temperatures in the 70s in the city, 66 degrees overnight in the suburbs. Otherwise, we are talking partly cloudy through the overnight, more sunshine as we wake up on our sunday. Lots of sunshine actually. 74 degrees is your temperature at around 9 00. Emotions are high over the controversial figure who some city dwellers revive, others despise over allegations of racism. You probably was a biggoted person, but there is probably a lot of murals that have biggoted people. I dont think hes like a confederate war solder. People here calling for open dialogue, rather acts of destruction. I understand tensions are running real high. I just dont think vandalism is the way to go about this. As Police Officers held the scene saturday, jane golden with the citys mural arts program, assessing the damage. I hear it from both sides. And for me, that necessitates next moves that are very thoughtful and careful and respectful of all of the point every view. She sure is, now she and her daughter hoping to make a difference for people going through the same kind of battle. Fox 29s joanne pill edgey caught up with the duo in our studio tonight. They were in the middle of their john any burlington city, new jersey. Joy ann. Thats right, joyce. This is one serious river journey. 300 miles by kayak, in a little more than two weeks, we caught up with the mother and daughter duo, who are on a mission to raise awareness and funds for Breast Cancer research. She could just move on with her life, as Breast Cancer survivor, but instead, 59 year old carolyn want to do much more. After they gave me three years to live, this is my 14th t is a message of hope. So i hate a water cliche, but i hope the ripples what were doing expand far beyond the delaware. Two amazing women, raised over 28,000 so far for Breast Cancer research. Theyll be paddling through philadelphia tomorrow, and then south, ending their trip next weekend in baltimore harbor. You can follow their kayak journey on their Facebook Page called kayak river of life. Dawn, joyce . Very inspiring, thank you, joanne. Up next it is video that will have you reaching for a tissue, a mom got an amazing surprise while she was off having breakfast this morning. She got a lot more than pancakes served to her table. And one school had planned for all it student dont watch the Solar Eclipse this monday. But now those plans are in jeopardy. Because of a problem with the glasses they bought. Is a mom out having breakfast at the jersey shore had a lot more than pancakes coming to her this morning, thats michael hi, serves United States coast guards, been away but came home to surprise his mom at uncle bills pancake house in stone harbor. He brought her pancakes, some flowers, bringing his mom to tears. Oh, my goodness. I know. Can you imagine . You see the mom there, there she is. She started crying. She had no words. Thats a great story. Well, the Solar Eclipse, just couple of days away now, weve been waiting for this, but some children in minnesota just learned that they may not be able to, and actually, wont be able to watch the rare event firsthand. It is all because after problem with the eclipse glasses that the school ordered. You see, the School District near springfield says it bought 2,000 pairs on line for all of it student, but it later found out that those glasses were not iso certified. It is kind of sad. Because thinking that somebody would go out and make fake glasses to hurt people, and just to make money, because that kind of ruined a lot of kids eyes, and if they can get more glasses in time maybe they can still do it. Well, hopefully they will. The School Administrators desperately trying to get ahold of some glasses, as soon as possible. The student would really like to see that eclipse safely on monday. And on monday, join us right here on fox 29 at 2 30 as the total eclipse hits the east coast, and we hit our maximum coverage, right at 2 45. Going outside to watch it, well do it safely, first of all, then tweet us your pictures, or post them on our fox 29 Facebook Page. Lets check back in with your fox 29 weather authority. We take live look at wildwood on a saturday night. Not a bad evening to be out walking the board, but there are some showers moving through right about now. Monica cryan is here with your full forecast. Going to get wet . Well, at this point the showers are breaking apart like we thought. There could be few isolated showers, we will be dodging, if, through the next hour or two, otherwise, it is a quiet night. 81 degrees, were still cooling things down, your high today 88, above average, very warm go of it this afternoon. Im sure a lot of you noticed that. Here we, are looking at the ultimate doppler radar, line of storms i was talking b notice off to the west of us, it was pretty strong. Then the second it really reached into lancaster, berks county it, lost its strength. And it started to break apart. And so now well just see some isolated showers move through. But most of us will stay quiet through the overnight. And into early tomorrow morning, we clear things out very nicely. The rest of your sunday, looking beautifully sunny. Now monday we will see little more moisture, some clouds moving in as we head into early monday morning, and then around 2 00, remember this is when the things get going with the Solar Eclipse, this is just one model saying there could be some scattered shower activity, some of the other models are saying it is actually dry. So, we will say slight chance for some showers, not everybodys going to see wet weather. I still think we will get good viewing of the Solar Eclipse, here, in philadelphia, and surrounding areas, 80 coverage with the Solar Eclipse, so still it will be a magnificant site to see. Eightyeight is the high for tomorrow. Eightythree in wildwood. Eightythree in pottstown. Eightyfour for those of in you lancaster. Lot of sunshine tomorrow. Certainly clear skies. Then as we led into monday, still going to be in the upper 80s, look at this, tuesday, 90s. So it is getting real hot as we head into our tuesday, into the mid week, upper 80s, well above average as we head into wednesday. We get another rounds of Storm Chances by wednesday, into the afternoon. A lot of phillies games through tuesday, wednesday, thursday, friday. And at that point, thursday, and friday, a bit cooler, guys, talking low 80s, some relief from the heat. Ninetys, tuesday. All right, monica, thanks. Sean standing by. Getting hot in here. All right, dawn. If you are looking for a breitbart spot in philly sports, folks, we have new leader in the clubhouse. And the mans name is Reese Hoskins. Ill tell you why i say that next in sports. From the time i was pregnant with him, had so much life and energy in him. He wanted out, and he wanted to conquer the world. Right now, quintons goal is to be a doctor. Its not easy being a single parent with three kids and having to provide for them. But my son will be an amazing doctor, and hell help people that are less fortunate. No matter where you are in your college journey, sallie mae can help you find the money you need. Over time things change, no doubt about that. Perfect example, eagles linebacker mychal kendricks, if you asked me two years ago, i would have told you he was a big star like johnny fontain, but i was wrong about that. But he asked for trade, due to lack of playing time, i would say lack every making place. Kendricks all over the place, two interceptions, one sack, few other plays, have caught a lot of peoples attention this preseason, probably not a coincidence hes making plays, because after all he asked to be traded still works for the eagles just in case a team comes calling before the start of the season come september 10th. Heres eagles linebacker coach ken, on why he thinks the difference for mychal kendricks. Well he certainly had more opportunity, i think, to make plays, but mike has always been a talented individual, maybe more familiarity with our scheme, to embrace the details what were doing little more. Maybe that helps his production a little bit. But again, i think he is taking the next step like a lot of the guys are. Preseason football, panthers at the titans, no cam newton, recovering from shoulder surgery. But we did have marcus, there he is, good season last year for oath us, bigger this year. Steady in the boat, finds walker in the back of the ends zone. Check this out. Over on the panthers side, how about this guy . Im wondering if Christian Mccaffrey can make it 16 games. Up the middle for the 17yard touchdown scamper. Titans go onto win 34 to 27. Over to the diamond, the saying in the entertainment business is the show must go on. Well the same goes for the phillies who we all know are struggling, and yes, they do have the youngest ross nerve baseball. But right now, theyre on pace to lose 104 games this season, the most since 1961. Phils at the giants, two worse records in the national league. Phillies need more of this, thats Reese Hoskins right there who has been every bit as advertised. He takes a huge hack. His fourth homerun since being called up ten games ago. This game is still in progress, phillies lead four to three in the fourth. Need more of that, that guy is really, really good. Yes, maybe theyll win tonight. Never know. We will be watching. Well, special coverage of the upcoming Solar Eclipse is next. And your powerball drawing is after that. Good day philadelphia weekend start at 7 00 a. M. Have a great evening. Fios is not cable. Com monday it is the total eclipse of the sun, the first time in the United States in almost 40 years and the first exclusively in the u. S. Since the birth of our nation. Great to have you with us, im thomas drayton. Im lucy noland, thank for joining us for this fox 29 fox9 special, eclipse, begins 1 21 monday hits maximum coverage at 2 44, 80 for us, ends at 43 01, exciting for all every us, right . Busy time for nasa. Coasttocoast americans are about to witness the first total Solar Eclipse since 1918 back when it traveled from Washington State to florida. This time around the path is quite similar crossing from the pacific to the atlantic, but his our area were not in what theyre calling the path of totality. But will still see something. A total eclipse of the sun happens when the sun, the moon and the earth all line upper expectly. And the moon is able to cast a shadow down on to the earth. Now, there is about 07mile wide strip across the entire United States, starts in portland, oregon, goes all the way out to charleston, south carolina, but everywhere in your north america youre going to see something called a partial eclipse, where little bit of the sun is going to be blocked out. Nasa scientists will have 11 spacecrafts watching from space. But theyre also asking you, back here on terra firm a, to step up as citizen scientist, collect data about how the eclipse affects the weather where you are. What you gather can help scientists understand the way sunlight interact with the earths atmosphere. Were asking people all over the count troy help us observe how the eclipse change the atmosphere of the earth. Did this wonderful natural experiment thats happening, we know the shadow is going to pass by. And thats going to change things like temperature levels, humidity, clouds. So in fact, the only thing that people need to be involved in this experiment is a very simple cheap thermometer, and also an app that you can download for free. But even if youre not into the whole amateur scientist thing, says just go out and see it. The entire process of the eclipse for the moon to go all the way across the sun actually last couple every hours, most places lucky enough for the moon to entirely cover the sun it will last for about two and a half minutes every total darkness, so the whole thing start to finish couple of hours, most dramatic part cup of of minutes. Where ever you have in the u. S. A. You will see partial eclipse, does not happen very often, dont pass of this, even if it means getting eclipse glasses or making camera, go out and see it. This is going to be exciting, show like this has tourists from around the worlds flocking to places like portland, denver, atlanta, all to witness something many will never see again. Foxs al leer ya k un a has more. Reporter people who have seen Solar Eclipses before say it is a beautiful and emotional event. The lights and colors like nothing youve experienced before. But where is the best place to be on august 21 . Your options quite literally run from sea to shining sea. The total Solar Eclipse is really breath taking. Perhaps 100 Million People will see it. Thats a great thing. Probably going to be the most observed eclipse in history. Some bold predictions for this summers toll total Solar Eclipse, will be visible nationwide, partially unless youre in key area. Really important to be able to try to get in the path of totality, which goes all the way across the nation from oregon all the way to the carolinas. That path is a relatively narrow band, about 70 miles wide. In the west, many prime spots are road trip away from larger cities like portland, boise, salt lake city. The best weather is in oregon and idaho. If you can be there, and it will happen in the morning every august 21, the prediction from historical weather reports is pretty clear skies. You have got your best chance there. But grand National Park in wyoming, that will be spectacular. Large chunk every nebraska will see totality including lincoln folds by kansas city, st. Louis and the largest city in the path, nashville. The southern part of the great smokey mountains will experience totality. As will part of northeast georgia, Western North carolina, and upstate south carolina. All expected to draw big crowds because of the proximity to atlanta and charlotte. I think it is absolutely going to be worth it. Yes, it is a few minute of darkness, but this is the only time when you can see the outer most layer of the sun in a natural way. It is the only kind of the biggest celestial event to see from the earth. Not deterring eclipse chasers from across the globe. Weve had calls from people in europe, south america, and so people will come from all over the worlds to see this and chase this eclipse. Entheusiasts are going wild, booking hotels, and making arrangements. Start marking it on your calendar, because there will be tremendous interest in this. You know the little ones will think it is so cool. The kids in the School District out near harrisburg wont actually be watching the eclipse. The Cumberland ValleySchool District is cancelling recess on monday. They dont want students injuring themselves by looking up at the sun. That will letter district officials recognize the opportunity to view an eclipse, certainly rare, but student safety is more important. Understand. But i feel a little, you know right . The little ones want to go out and look at it, of course we talk about this all the time, you need those glasses. Thats key. Very important reminder, there are real ones, there are fake ones. Amazon issuing refunds to customers who may have purchased fake Solar Eclipse glasses on the website. Can you imagine . The company also took down few listings for glasses on its websites as a precaution, to saferly view next weeks eclipse you need glasses stamped with a iso seal. To help stop you from accidentally getting knockoffers, the American Astronomical Society has posted list of verified vendors and websites that sele clips glasses. Even if you got the glasses with the logo on it, could you have fakes. And if you dont have the right glasses, the consequences could be permanent. Blindness, first, look for the iso, the american seal, and ce the european stamp of approval. Even those markings may be fake. So in the midst of all of the excitement the danger is real. Here is fox 29s joyce evans. Are you ready . We have one week, one week until the Solar Eclipse. Everyone is talking about it. The Solar Eclipse hype machine is in full swing. People have got the fever. Bad. This is my first eclipse, so i dont agree to expect, but im real excited for. You got your glasses in. No, not yet. But not s taking the bathe. I only i dont know where to find them. Even if they can finds those glasses stamped with the official International Seals of approval, for looking directly at the sun saferly. Im going to hide. Why . Why, im afraid if i look at it, i might ruin my eyesight, go blind or something. Others fall somewhere between terrified and gravely concerned. Since counterfeit or flatout phony glasses are turning up. I was wondering, you know, how do you know . How do you know if you have the ones that will be safe for your family. You dont want to damage your childrens eyes. Im worried, were all worried . Wills eye open thal gist and chief is an expert on how the sun can damage a retina on regular day. But with the eclipse, the decrease in the power of the suns radiance is just enough so that you actually can look at it long enough to get a serious burn. And you wont feel a thing. The central part of the retina, the macaulay, has no pain fibers. So, you can get a very serious burn that actually destroys tissue there and it wont hurt at all. So how can you tell if those glasses you just scored are safe . Before youre looking at the sun . You can look at an actual light bulb, and if you just see the fill meant, not the light bulb, then your glasses are dark enough. Oh, i can see his light right now. Thats all i can see. Yup, there it is. It is important to keep that in mind. By the way the doctor tells joyce the Wills Eye Hospital loom will be extra staffed monday since we live in a life of selfies and live stream. How can you tell if you mess dollars up . It will appear your vision like vaseline is smack in the middle of your eye. Thats personment. Lets hope nobody has that. People love to get married on special days, valentine day, christmas, new years eve. Thats right. But if youre getting married on eclipse day, it is a little late to rethink all of your plans, but maybe you might want to . We are hearing quite a few couples across the country are getting married monday including a nashville couple tying the knot at science center, couple at kansas city giving out glass toss have their guess watch the eclipse. If you are into ancient astrology way back in the day, said folks should avoid marriage and other events, because what is initiated during a eclipse does not move forward, and never works. That was then. This is now. Soap, if any local couples are getting married, congratulations. Yes, and let us know. Dont postpone it. Of course many people have Solar Eclipse fever, looking forward to the rare event on august 21. And we mention that date because one mom not so sure about the timing of this historic event. She sees it as a scheduling conflict. The size museum in dallas is hosting viewing party from noon to 2 00 p. M. But she believes it should be rescheduled for the weekends because kids are going back to school that day. Needless to say, her Facebook Post is getting all sort of response. Well, the thing is, to reschedule that, would you have to talk to, well, god, you know, can we just reschedule the eclipse . Make it happen. Might want to rethink that. Thats interesting. All right, so now the eclipse is bad for your eyes, what about your Furry Friends . You have got a good reason not to worry too much. And the sun is a powerful source of energy. Nationwide. So what for years, fios has been promising fast internet to small businesses. But for many businesses, its out of reach. Why promise something you cant deliver . Comcast business is different. We deliver superfast internet with speeds of 250 megabits per second across our entire network, to more companies, in more locations, than fios. We do business where you do business. Com and enter your nonwinning tickets for the gold fish secondchance drawing with 10,000 prizes. Welcome back to fox 29 news special, the eclipse. Think about this. States across the us stands to lose 4. 2 giga watts of solar power come monday. As equivalent to power used by 4. 2 million homes. Really . Even so, lucy, experts say little cause for concern here, because with a eclipse they plan ahead. In fact, crescent dunes, solar fields, out in nef add, a services 75,000 people, and it always has Energy Reserve towards up. Other solar plants will rely on winds, and hydro, or conventional fuel. So all safe. They do say it is a very powerful moment, but no the sun is not going to set the woods on fire come monday. Actually the humans are the receipt threat. True, with more than 1 Million People expected to flock in oregon in the middle of wilds fire season, officials quite worried about careless tourists who might eventually spark a fire. Joel wald man takes a look. Not quite what you had in mind when you started to find yourself getting sucked into this whole Solar Eclipse frenzy, is it . Thats probably because the funky eclipse glasses and hundreds of watch parties being planned across the country are, yes, way more fun way of getting into the spirit. Once in a lifetime kinds of thing real. I Amazing Things that you can see. One of the 131 Million People planning to watch this once in a lifetime event finding the best spot to catch it it, most likely your high priority. Cities closest to the path of totality have the best viewing opportunities. And the largest city in that path is salem. The capitol of oregon. With thousands of people expected to turn out to celebrate the roughly two minute long Solar Eclipse, making the beaver state one of the hottest spots to be on august 21. It is going to be where the sun and the moon and the earth are just perfectly aligned so that the moon is inbetween the sun and the earth, blocking out the suns light, casting the shadow down in the United States. Thats super cool. Once in a lifetime moment just so happens to be making it appearance right smack in the middle of oregons peak wild fire month. Will be able to see, start seeing the Solar Eclipse happening, a chance for people to be part of history. Droves of visitors already pouring into oregons differs landscape, of forest mountains, and campgrounds. What firefighters say is their biggest fear, concern most out of towners are not used to living in heavy ours and heightened threats every fires, despite whether or not they mean to one wrong mover as simple as hot car parked on guy doctors grass, could easily lead to wild fire disaster. Burn ban in place, if you got a drought area, we strictly enforce those for good reason. With the cosmic phenomenon known in oregon as eclipse day, less than week out, all they ask in return is that you come prepared. Treat this like a road trip. Regardless of how far youre traveling from home to via the eclipse, plan on having food, water, medication if you require medication, sustain yourself for the duration of the eclipse. Governor kate brown along with local and state emergency officials, holding final press conference, in hopes of reassuring concerned residents the state is prepared with a resources they need to respond efficiently to any potentially dangerous scenarios. Stay for awhile, relax, saferly enjoy our beautiful state. Joe wald man, fox news. And then there is pet, and some pet owners are little concerned. So can you let your pet outside during the eclipse . What if they look up . Well, vetinary januaries have some vice. Of course they would need protection, if they dont have eye protection, they probably would suffer some of the eye damage humans would. I dont know if they could, you know, just enjoy it with me. Probably just blind folds them. You dont, you dont need to do it. Vet say you dont have to worry. They say the damage comes from looking directly at the eclipse, which animals will not be curious enough to do. Thats just not what theyre going do. Pretty cool shades on the dog, though. Thats true. Whether the eclipse happens, youll want to do one thing, post about it, right . That may not be an option. But wheres gary . saved money on motorcycle insurance with geico. Goin up the country. Later, gary i have a motorcycle wonderful. Im goin up the country, baby dont you wanna go . Im goin up the country, baby dont you wanna go . Geico motorcycle, great rates for great rides. So when the eclipse hits our area, max time 2 44 monday, expect limited cell phone coverage, but it is really got nothing to do with the eclipse itself. It is all because so many people will trying to post pictures and videos, you know the self eels, of the once in a lifetime event. Of course. The blue lines closest to the totality. There are plenty of apps to help you find the best location to see the Solar Eclipse. Plenty of ways to share all of your photos and video. The question is will any of it actually work the day of the eclipse . The sun being block by the moon wont crash connections but the hundreds of thousands of people in the same general area calling and posting the same time, certainly could. You go to a rule location where you already have spotty or limited cell service, youre probably not going to get any cell service at all because of the overload of the network from people trying to live stream or to share the event on social media. All right, now, you know science has come a long way since the last total Solar Eclipse, exclusively visible in the u. S. , of course 1776 that year. Yet many myths about the effect of the eclipse are still around today. So what can you believe . Heres foxs laura engel. As scientists and entheusiasts have been preparing, astrologers have been preparing, as well. This Solar Eclipse has enormous meaning for the United States as a whole for a number of reasons. It is the first total Solar Eclipse visible only in the continental United States, since 1776, and it also hits the moon in the chart of the united state from july 4th, 1776. So to translate that into english, this eclipse is having us massively revisit our definition of ourselves, who we are as a people. Humans have red into cosmic events for centuries. Ancient astrologers associated Solar Eclipses with the fate of the state, and the fate of the ruler. They would pay very close attention to get information about what might be coming. And, in fact, it was their job to let the ruler know what was coming down the pike. A total Solar Eclipse would have been extremely important because it represents complete blotting out of the sky, and then a change when the light comes back. Throughout history, different civilizations had stories to describe what was happening. Two of the most common ways of explaining a Solar Eclipse are either that it is a time for reconciliation, or it is a time of conflict, you know, a lot of people have stories about how demons, or animals, are trying to eat the sun, and it is their job to scare it away, so they make a lot of noise by banking on drums, or, you know, clanging pots and pans. Many of these cultures fear Solar Eclipses because the life giving sun would go dark. It is hard to imagine a more dramatic event than the day turning into night when it shouldnt. It is the middle of the day all the sudden, something is covering up the sun, so, i mean, you have to think that people all over the world were probably frightened by this. Even today, miss surrounding a Solar Eclipse persist. One of of the misconceptions, Solar Eclipse is harmful for pregnant woman. And if they watch it it will harm their unborn child. And that stems from the misconception that Solar Eclipses produce harmful radiation. And thats not the case. No matter what you believe or think, a Solar Eclipse doesnt happen often, so, it is no wonder that this celestial phenomenon has garnered awe for so long. In new york, laura engel, fox news.
