People in the community to convince people to talk to them and make them go home. Not everyone was willing to go home without some use of force. You did see some scuffles break out between people saying it was time to go home and people wanting to statement in fact this afternoon we saw the largest demonstration yet held peacefully in baltimore with students marching from Baltimore Penn station to city hall. Thousands of students marched on Baltimore City hall this evening. The largest peaceful demonstration the city has seen since the death of freddie gray. Organized by College Students from several Baltimore Area universities, the students gathered at penn stay, then headed for city hall. We are the ones that are getting murdered in the streets. They are coming for us. We want to reclaim our city. This is our city, our streets. Reporter the demonstration also served as a chance to reset the focus of the city on the issues that launched the protest Movement Weeks ago. Without looting or violence diluting the message. Reporter why was it important for you to come out and be part of this . Because we need justice and freddie gray will not be forgotten. Reporter police say they made just 18 arrests related to protests today. We saw none at this march where small children accompanied their children. Reporter was it important for your kids to see this . Yes, because its a movement, and its time for change. Reporter just in that last minute or so we saw some of the last of the riot equipped police call at nice. Theres one other development of note. Some 100 people who were arrested on monday nature during the riot that spun out of control were released tonight without charges. They had been held for 48 hours. That means there are a little over 100 people who were arrested monday night still awaiting charges or their release. Thank you garrett. We should note for you attorneys representing many folks behind bars say their clients cannot afford the exorbitant bail being assigned, and they could end up spedged months in jail. Tonight our partners at the Washington Post are reporting a prisoner in the police van with freddie gray said gray was trying to deliberately hurt himself. The report also stated the van driver had to stop three times when taking gray to a booking center. One time to put him in leg irons. Earlier this week police said they would not make public their results of the investigation into grays death when they turned over the report on friday. Because if there is a decision to charge in any event by the States Attorneys Office, the integrity of that investigation has to be protected. So by turning these documents or findings over to the States Attorneys Office as quickly as we can we are being accountable to them so that we can be accountable to the public. We are keeping a close eye on protests here in washington, new york city, and else where. Here in new york demonstrators did get a bit rowdy. Dozens of people have been arrested for refusing Police Orders to stay on the sidewalk. Our ellison barber is live at the white house where protesters gathered after marching through the streets. Reporter tonight it has been incredibly peaceful. We marched with the guys for a few hours. We know of at least two groups. One started in dupont, another started in chinatown. They met up and hundreds of protesters descended on the white around 9 00 p. M. , a few hundred people descended on the white house after walking through the streets of downtown d. C. Some were young and some were old, but their message was the same. They were there to support the people of baltimore. I think its important for me as someone who grew up in maryland, to stand with them to triand build a Better Baltimore where there isnt police brutality. Reporter and call for an end to what they believe is systemic police brutality. This is a National Problem of Police Killings that are completely out of control. Its not a baltimore issue. It really is a United States of america issue. Reporter some protesters criticized d. C. s mayor for sending police to help in baltimore. One of the signs we will have is d. C. Cops out of baltimore what. We need is justice for freddie gray and real substantive action, not marshal law. Reporter 34 officers were sent to baltimore. The Mayors Office tells us it was the right decision. According to a spokesperson those officers have already left. They say right now none of their officers are in baltimore. But there were many officers out tonight on motorcycles and in cars but they all stayed back. The only thing the officers stopped was the traffic, and for three hours, these people marched peacefully voicing their support for a city just 40 miles away. The white house is kind of the big endpoint. We saw lot of people arrive here. You cant really see behind me because they just turned to have light but a lot of people seemed to go home afterwards. We have been told there is some of the group thats still protesting. Last we heard they were around florida avenue. For the most part the white house behind us seemed to be tend point and most of those protesters left after they got here a little after 9 00 p. M. Ellison barber, wusa 9. The mayor of baltimore used it, the president did, too, sov countless commentators. Were talk about the word thugs dwrood describe the protesters. Reporter derek, long before the uprisings on these baltimore streets, the word thug has meant Different Things at different times, but today its suggested that its the new n word. The mayor of baltimore recently used it. Too many people have spent generations building up this city for it to be destroyed by thugs. Reporter she later apologized, but . Apologies from the president. A handful of criminals and thugs who tore up the place. Reporter this impassioned postgame rant left Richard Sherman with the designation. Thats the result you gonna get some suggested that he acted like a, quote, thug. Reporter historically thug has been associated with organized crime. Somebody that takes hits, that does the dirty work of somebody else. Reporter the word thug originated in india to describe highway robbers. They were hired hands who broke up unions. Thug kept its credentials until rapper you tupac shakur tattooed the word on his chest. When was the last time a white guy was called a thug . Its code for the nword. Its coded for the uneducated. Its coded for the poor. I think its the go to word to speak of a black man. Reporter still, some suggests there is a time to use the word. A person is out to harm or hurt or violate someones right, yeah, thats a thug. Reporter folks in baltimore are quick to draw dingers especially when it comes to thugs versus protesters. These are nothing but children k. These arent thugs. Reporter though there are some who do seek the label. Its a label that developed over time, a label that some black men have coveted. But be careful what you wish for, says American University professor dr. Watson and watch what you say. A thug deserves no understanding, so be careful who you put that label on. Reporter now, there are some who admit to using the word not just to describe criminals but anyone acting unruly but those folks say they also do so without raines mind. Could your teen unplug from his electronic days for 24 hours . A study found most teens could not without feeling lonelily. They didnt know what to do with all that extra time. So this got our Andrea Mccarren thinking. Is social media making kids antisocial . Reporter with the help of the wellness connection in Northern Virginia we assembled a group of teens and their parents to talk about social media use. It was a candid, fascinating discussion that exposed the disconnect in a lot of our households. A big point of social media is to get away from my parents. Like ill go on twitter bick know my parents arent there. Its almost like an escape. Reporter an escape that takes millions of teens into the world of twitter, snap chat, and instagram. If you dont want your grandma to be reading what you are posting, you probably shouldnt be posting it. I said, how do you have 1,000 friends . Have you met them . Why would you even post something that your parents could see . Just text your friends or something. Reporter seventeen anallers, seven parents and one expert spoke candidly about whether social media makes kids antisocial. Absolutely. I believe it 100 . I dont think its making them antisoarchlt i think its making them differently social. I want him to go outside, be with his frerntiondz do something. The problem is the way theyre beg social, theyre losing this. This face to face thing is much more difficult for them. Reporter we tweeted some questions to the others, asked others. Do you ever feel like youre not living life buck ear so busy recording it . I think thats a big part of snap chat is show people what youre doing. You can get in the car with three or four young boys and theyre all with their heads down. Its not social media, its our inability or ourability to manage it. I think it can be an invasion of privacy stissments. Reporter most teens believe they have the right to privacy when it comes to social media. Like if you were telling a secret and you dont want anybody else to know. Reporter their parents disagree. I dont feel like its an invasion of privacy to look at their social media. I do feel its an invasion of previous see to read their text. If i were doing something bad, i would understand, but im not doing anything bad. I have the right and the ability to be in your stuff as long aus ear in my household. Privacy in my mind is things that other people cant see. A die real. Oneonone phone call is private what. They put out there in the Public Domain is not private. Reporter we also asked those teen agers how much time they spend on social media every day. Their answers varied from just five minutes to several hours. Many admit to checking their account as soon as they wake up in the morning, right after school and just before bed. Winds out of the south at 7 and clouds beginning to move in. But radar is quiet. I think were going to have a dry morning commute. Yellow alert tomorrow, primarily for attach and evening with showers and thunderstorms. It still appears the heaviest activity will be west of i95. Futurecast looks like this. Temperatures generally in the 50s at 6 00 a. M. No shortage of clouds. We do have a few sprinkles in the mountains. By 8 30, 9 00, 50s in the burb is with just clouds. By 1 00 we see spotty showers. Heaviest Activity Still swrift 8 1. Bi6 00 showers and a few thunderstorms. We dont see anything severe tomorrow but some of the individual storms could have some heavy downpours. This gave the nationals the lead and they never gave it back. In all 15 hits as they win their second straight, 134. Got the offense going. This was a bizarre sight at k578 deposit yards. 46,000 seats empty. The first ever game played without fans. Manager Buck Showalter said his guys needed to selfmotivate, and they did. The 50 or so fans who stood outside the game got to cheer and could be heard throughout the stadium. The birds won, and manager Buck Showalter says he hopes this will propel not only his team but the city as well. We talk to players, and i want to be a rallying force for our city. I want us to learn from some stuff thats gone on, on both sides. There are so many story lines surrounding this years finals. The capitals and the rangers meeting in the playoffs for the fifth time in seven years. The rangers finished the regular season with the best record in the nhl. And these two teams have a very long storied history. But its a history that has favored new york. The capitals last two years have come in seven games at the hands of the rangers. But the capitals say thats even more motivation. We get the chance to play the best team in the league, get a chance to try and get some redemption that theyve kind of handled us pretty good the last two years so this is the ultimate challenge for us. And for the first time in three years, even though it seemed a lot longer than that, the Washington Redskins head into the draft with a firstround pick. First round begins tomorrow night. Now trading back from their fifth spot is still a good possibility. A lot of times if theyre calling to us move up to their spot and were moving back, we have the leverage. So what i can do, say were going five spot, eight spot, 15 spot, i look at the board, get an idea who might be there. Wed love to get more picks. We have seven originals right now. I would love to get 10 plus out of this thing. He says if they do move back but then start to see players get taken off, then they have extra picks and more leverage. It is going to be an interesting night on television. Were not used to this. We havent done this in a few years. Not since that first round when 40 of streetlights in detroit at one point did not work. At the time that the bankruptcy filing was done the Public Lighting Authority had a hard time of finding a bank. Citi did not run away from the table like some other bankers did. They had the strength to help us go to the credit markets and raise the money. Its a brighter day in detroit. Kids are feeling safer while they walk to school. 40 of the lights were out but theyre not out for long. Theyre coming back. What does the daredevil feel before he revs his engine .
