Is going to be your express lanes trying to make your way towards d. C. First a major water main break. Now a sinkhole has opened up in the hyattsville section of Prince Georges County. Its not clear in the road is at all secure at this point. The water is still gushing. Nikki burdine joins from us decatur street with the latest. Nikki . Reporter thats right. Were standing right in front of the sinkhole. Im going to step out of the way so you can see for yourself. It is unbelievable. Right now you can see the top of the car just peeking out of that sinkhole. This is what happened. Firefighters tell me that there was apparently a water main break and you can see the water still running there. Then that car sunk in where the water was. This is a very serious situation. Fortunately no one was hurt but ive been talking with neighbors here on edmonson and decatur. A neighbor told me theres water coming into her house or coming into her neighbors house. She said her neighbor who actually owned that car came out of their house when water started coming in. They got in their car to leave. As soon as they got in the car, a mother, father and three children say they started to feel the car sink. Thankfully they got out just in type. Once they got out of the car, we know what happened next. That car sunk into the water, into the sinkhole. Its a very dangerous situation. Again nowas hurt. Water is still flowing. Wssc is here right now trying to get the water turned off. But edmonson and decatur is closed right now. Stay away from this area if at all possible because you will not be able to turn on to edmonson at all right now. Again, family members are okay but im told they have water in their home. Reporter its a relatively quiet start to this day here in germantown but theres definitely snow to greet commuters once they do start their way and make their way out on to the roadways. Theres a coating of snow and underneath the snow, there is sheen and that is ice. This is the owners car of the gas station. He told me that he actually spun out a little as he with us heading here. You can see on the roof of his car and even though it is [indiscernible] a light coating of ice. Thats what folks will have to deal with when they get to their cars this morning. There is going to be ice underneath that snow. So no doubt that is going to be repeated on the roadways. So Loudoun County schools are closed because of this reason. Mike, andrea . Firefighters believe theyve accounted for all six of the victims in that massive fire at a mansion in annapolis. A sixth body was recovered yesterday. However, none of the victims have been identified. The mansion was owned by don and sandra pyle. Family members say their four grandchildren were spending the night with them when the fire began. Investigators are expected to continue examining the site for two more days. An exc. I. A. Officer has been convicted on espionage charges. A federal jury found 47year old jeffrey sterling guilty for leaking classified details of an operation to thwart aans Nuclear Program irans Nuclear Program to a New York Times reporter. He will be sentenced in april. Former Virginia Governor Bob Mcdonnell can remain a free man while he appeals his corruption convicts. A federal Court Approved the request yesterday. He was sentenced for to years in prison for illegally taking gifts and loans while he was virginias governor. He was scheduled to begin prison in two weeks. A hearing on his appeal is set for may 12. A bill which would prohibit discrimination on the basis of Sexual Orientation and gender identity is now headed for the full Virginia State senate. Is investigating an alleged threat against a Southwest Airlines plane while it was being attributed to isis. Investigators say the threat was made on twitter against flight 4200 flying from san diego to dallas. They say someone claimed there was a nuclear bomb on board. The flight landed safely yesterday evening and was not diverted. The threat is similar to others made against flights over the weekend. Some jet blue passengers could be stuck in boston for days instead of sitting on a beach in palm beaf, florida like beach, neared like they plan florida palm beach, florida, like they planned. It was bound for palm beach and returned to the gate in boston yesterday evening. Nothing suspicious was found during the search of the plane. Authorities now say that that threat was not credible. A Record Number of people falsely convicted of crimes were exonerated last year in the united states. Thats according to a report by the National Registry of exonerations. Researchers say 125 people were exonerated. Many had their drug convictions dismissed after lab tests showed they never had any illegal drugs. Shame on u. S. , the title of a new report which blasts the federal government for failing to protect children. The Childrens Advocacy Institute report says the government is putting danger of future harm by failing to enforce Child Protection laws. The report faults all three branches of government. President obama is calling for more funding to fight antibiotic resist tent germs, the socalled super bugs. Hes going to ask congress to nearly double the funding to 1. 2 billion. The goal is to prevent the reemergence of the diseases thought to be wiped out years ago. Every year thousands of americans die from infections which are now resistent to antibiotics. It will be the neighborhoods that are in a lot of trouble this morning and thats probably why most of these School Closes have occurred with some delays. St. Marys county in Southern Maryland has closed for the day. Heres doppler, the big view. You see the storm. I color enhanced the heaviest radar. You can see them easier. The blue returns youre seeing in eastern long island up through new england, thats the 2, 3, 4inch per hour stuff thats pounding areas there. For us weve had these bands, light to occasionally moderate. As far as snowfall totals, ive been looking at the reports. Anywhere from a dusting to 2, 3 inches with isolated spots like germantown and fairfax. Had a couple of reports actually over 4 inches of snow since yesterday under the persistent bands. We have one this morning at this hour not as heavy as it was but certainly if you are in northeastern prince georges, bowie, anne arundel and even howard county, youre seeing some of the snow. Over toward annapolis as well. This is moving just east to south. The more persistent bands have set up west of us, west of frederick, myersville to hagerstown through charles town now. Loudoun county through western fairfax. Its a little heavier around chantilly and centreville than as you head toward the beltway. Once you get to fairfax, snow is lighter than out west. Picks up a little bit just north of stafford. Thats moving toward stafford right now. Goldvein as well. This goes almost to dahlgren. And virginia beach, norfolk right now, theyre seeing a moderate band of snow for them. Temps mid 20s north to 31 in town. Weve got 31 fredricksburg as well with 28 in winchester. Even down in the northern neck, jan told me she had half an inch of snow. Well see the snow bands for another few hours. By 8 00, 9 00 things will start to settle down. Midday, a little bit of sun, 34. Mid to upper 30s this afternoon with some sunshine increasing as we get into the late afternoon. Tonight it gets very cold. 23 in town. President obama travels to saudi arabia today to pay respects to the royal family following King Abdullahs death. Mr. Obama is cutting short his final day of his visit to india so he with make the trip. The president will meet with the new monarch. During his last day in india, the president warned that the war against Climate Change will not stand a chance without indias support. Mr. Obama says the two countries could forge one of the defining partnerships of this century with indias support in that battle. The president and Prime Minister signed what they call a New Friendship pact during the visit. With fuel and time running out, a pilot of a small plane was escorted by an airplane and a helicopter to make it to safety to make an emergency parachute landing on sunday. The seattlebased pilot talks about his rescue and the coordination of efforts that saved his life. Susan mcginnis has the story. Reporter u. S. Coast guard video shows a small plane that ran into trouble over the Pacific Ocean sunday afternoon. Pilot lou morton was flying the sr22 from cal cool to hawaii california to hawaii when he started running out of fuel 250 miles off the coast of maui. He radioed the Hawaii National guard telling them he planned to ditch the plane. Authorities guided him toward a cruise ship and about four hours later with fuel running out, morton releases the planes emergency parachute. As soon as he deployed his pair parachutes, we were following him and basically what we did, we continued following his track as much as possible. Reporter after morton released the chute, the plane nosedived toward the pacific. Then levels off and makes a vertical landing into the ocean. Morton made his way out of the plane into a raft. The work of the team getting me out of the water and on to the boat as quickly as possible, it was great. Reporter the cruise ship rescued him amid 12foot high waves in good condition. Were starting to see a couple of the snowfall continue here in northwest d. C. Its very light but in some areas, its not so light. A little bit of heavier snow band going on. Take a look at doppler 9000. This is all on the back side of that monster storm thats pushing on through the new england area. As these snow showers push from north to south, theyre actually pushing off to the east as the morning unfolds. So this is just a morning event with the snow showers. Weve seen some of the heavier bands right along 66 just south of leesburg. This will push off by the east. By 9 00 we should be pretty much dry out there. Lots of clouds, a couple of flurries and some of those moderately heavy snowfalls continuing but by lunch time, well see peeks of sunshine out there. Temperatures stay into the mid 30s but with temperatures below freezing for the morning hours, anything that falls is pretty much sticking on any of those grassy surfaces, especially. Lets go over to trenice with traffic. Sunshine is right up my alley. We could use that to help with some of the snow were still seeing on the roads. If youre just leaving the house or waking up thinking of getting into the express lanes on 95, i would think twice if your travels take you through newington. Going to be stop and go. That importance has been there for quite some time this morning. Lets take a look at our maryland cameras. Looking better on 270. Still decent delays out of frederick. All morning weve been on the scene of a water main break in hyattsville which turned into a sinkhole. That sinkhole swallowed a mid size car. Theres another danger possibly going on too. Nikki burdine is live. Have they shot off the water yet . Reporter no, the water is still running. If you can take a look, you can see the water is still flowing quite a bit. You can see the car is barely peeking out. Theres another car just on the edge there that is about to go into the water as well. That home right there, thats where a family lives and they tell me that they saw water coming into their car early this morning into their home early this morning. So they got out of their house. They grabbed their family, a mother, a father and three children and they went to get in their car. Its that car thats under water right now. Apparently a anybody tells me that that family started to feel their car sink down. So they got out. Thankfully they got out just in time because we know what happened to that car. It sunk into the water. Everybody is final. Nobody is hurt is fine. Nobody is hurt. I was just talking to another person who lives here. She lives in the basement of that home where the car is. Theyre having to evacuate. Theyre worried about the safety of their home. Of course theres water in there but theyre also worried about what could happen here. So everyone is just standing outside. Im told they will be having to evacuate soon. Its not clear if it will be all of these homes or just the basement of this one home. But you can see that car still very much under water. Water is still running. Wssc has been here all morning trying to get it turned off but they are unsuccessful. The other car right next to it obviously in danger. We cant tell how big this hole is but its obviously pretty large if its going to wallow a swallow a car like that we cant tell what kind of car it is. Thats how far down it s. Stay away from edmonson road off kenilworth avenue. Thats where the situation is happening. That is where a car was swallowed by a sinkhole. Im told it was caused by a water main break. Back to you in the studio. And its still flowing. Nikki, we see all the firefighters. Is wssc on the scene there trying to look for where the water main break is . Reporter they were here a few minutes ago at one end and moved. I think theyre now at another end. Theyve been walking through here. I dont know where they are right now but they are trying to find the water main break. Their priority right now is trying to get the water shut off which theyre having a hard time doing. There is somebody carrying a little person on their back trying to get away from the water going into some of these houses. Well continue to follow this. Thank you, nikki. The flurries have subsided. For now looks like 5 inches is about as deep as the snow is going to get around this area in germantown. So there could be a potential of refreezing. Were not certain but it definitely feels colder. Theres a chill in the air. We have seen plow trucks come through because this side straight, bartholomew view drive. Plows have gone through and some traffic you can see, some bits of pavement there. But still lots of snow and underneath that snow we have layers of ice. So these side streets, any surfaces that are untreated, quite slick this morning. We actually had to brace yourselves as we were Walking Around and preparing for this live shot because of the slick conditions. The snow is falling. So obviously some very changing conditions as youre stepping out of the house this morning. I talked to the owner of the gas station that we are located at, talked to him some time ago. He told me he actually spun out when he was heading here. Lets hear what he had to say. Its frozen underneath. I took a slide coming around the corner off of cascades parkway. Obviously a telltale sign that plows have come through but certainly you do have to take it slow on these side streets, even though route 7, take a look there, traffic flowing smoothly. Travel bans are still in effect from new jersey to massachusetts as crews work to try and clear away the snow. Snow and incredible wind. Six states have declared emergencies. Connecticut, massachusetts and new york, its illegal to be out on the roads. Youll get a ticket, be arrested. New york, boston, new jersey august suspending travel on the subways, buses and trains. Airlines have canceled a total of nearly 8,000 flights to that region. Massachusetts even called up the national guard. Thunder snow was reported near cape cod up there. Hurricane force wind gusts reaching speeds of more than 75 miles per hour. If you lose power during the storm because of high winds, you might be without power for a period of 24 to 48 hours. The blizzard warning will remain in forget up there until wednesday and of course most schools are canceling classes up there. Some of the winds were almost Hurricane Force. 75 miles an hour Hurricane Force toward nantucket. Yes, ten ten nominal phenomenal storm. For us, were dealing with a little bit of snow for a few more hours before things settle down. Well get a little sun this afternoon. Temperatures will make the mid to upper 30s. Winds will be gusty so it will feel like its in the 20s. Well be cold. By tomorrow morning w. S single morning, wind chills Single Digits and teens. The hef jer snow bands from the heavier snow bands from long island, areas in coastal maine, 2, 3, 4inch per hour snow totals. For us lighter snow totals. We may still pick up half an inch, outside chance an inch. You see the snow bands more so in virginia than in maryland. Southern maryland is quiet. East and south is quiet. Still flakes flying. Generally light snow and flurries flying from columbia down toward bowie right now scattered about, Montgomery County, more so either side of 270. A little bit more moderate snow band from charles town now through purcelville, south of leesburg to aldie headed into extreme western fairfax around manassas. Lighter snows now in most of fauquier and Prince William counties. Stafford, the north side of town, this is tracking right over you. This could easily slicken up the roads there. The crash caused secret service to go into high alert yesterday. It seems as though they say he was just using it as a toy or hobbyist but it is illegal to fly any aircraft close to the white house. A Union Representing thousands of metro workers is now talking about the incident in the tunnel near lenfant plaza. All that smoke which ended up killing one passenger and injuring many more. The Transit Union claims employees have been discouraged from reporting unsafe conditions and it says metro has failed to consistently invest in emergency obtaining.
