Squad is cracking down on Violent Crimes in Prince Georges County. Joining me today to tell us more about the special unit are Prince Georges County police chief mark mcgaw and special agent steve with the fin. I want to get started with you, chief, about the crime we reported earlier this morning, the one seen at huron avenue near swann. Stephanie a mile an hour retz, our on ramirez, our reporter on the scene said there are two other crime scenes. There are multiple crime scenes. Unfortunately our county had a very challenging morning. The one part about this is that theyre all the same incident stemming from the same incident. We now have several individuals in the criminal Investigation Division that were speaking to right now. We believe we have the right people involved in this. Were trying to sort through it. Its only 12 hours old so there arent a whole lot of details i can give you other than i expect this case to close very quickly. Is this the kind of case youll need the f. B. I. Special unit to solve . One of the reasons we asked the f. B. I. To come help us is to look at violent crime. This is certainly the top of that scale. But really to look at groups that are doing robberies, the atm thefts robberies, the jump on the counter with the mask weve seen on several different occasions not only in Prince Georges County but throughout the region. Thats really what steve voghts bringing the fbi in allows us to do, to look at this regionally and not be bound by jurisdictional boundaries. What will the agency be doing to chef chief magaw. We set up a squad in maryland. We have a supervisor and five agents. Chief magaw has fulltime detectives. Robbing commercial institutions, gas stations, a bar, a restaurant, convenience store, its a federal crime just like a bank robbery. So well be working those crimes with chief magaws detectives in taking these Violent Offenders off the street. Penalties are a little more harsh. Is that what you bring to this table as well . Yes. Many people dont realize in the federal system, if youre a Violent Offender or flight risk, you can be detained pretrial. The minute the handcuffs go ow, you dont get out of jail. The sentence you serve is usually longer. You do 85 of your time and you dont serve the time in your local community. You you go to cumberland, maryland, michigan, to california, some remote locations. Its not pleasant. Chief, you really think that make as difference to a criminal that he might not spend his time near his family or he may be in for a really long time . Absolutely. Over the last two and a half years, weve driven down crime significantly in the county. This is the the next phase. Bringing in the f. B. I. , working with us, going after repeat Violent Offenders that, you know, have skirted the system, this system, the federal system is a tremendous deterrent to these individuals. A time commitment, a time ending on this or youre in for the long haul . Were in for the long haul. Special agent vogt and chief magaw, thank you both for being here with us. Howard is up next with our forecast. How muggy is out there, howard . Muggy. Its one of those air masses thats really soupy and while today well have a up scoff showers, i think a couple of showers, i think as tomorrows front approaches, a better chance of showers and thunderstorms. Tomorrow will be a yellow alert day. Today well make it about 87, 88. The clouds are keeping a lid on temperatures. A shower or storm cant are ruled out. 85 by 7 00 and 81 at 9 00. Forgive me for jumping around on the show. Heres doppler 9000. You can see whats happening down here from warrenton to charlottesville over toward the shenandoah valley. Nothing severe. We have a few heavier showers. One thing were seeing is how theyre going up and down. We seem them in motion, this one cell east of warrenton and culpeper had a light shower. Edward told me that a while ago. You see this stuff pulse up, pulse up. The other heavier stuff is between woodstock and front royal. Its trying to move to the north, northeast maybe passing east of strasburg and east of route 81. If that holds together, well have to watch out in a little while toward Stephens City and berryville. But these will pulse up and down for the afternoon. So thats idea spotty showers and storms are out there. You see the mostly cloudy skies we have. Im just going to try to get back to where i was. We did the weather headlines. Now we get back to temperatures. We have 79 in orange but 84 over in easton. Tappahannock, theyve seen more sun so theyre in the mid s on at 86. Humidity at 58 . Satellite and radar, we have a front down south. Most of the showers here are going to affect the carolinas. Were going to wait for some moisture to north. Then theres this front. Thats whats going to be arriving here tomorrow night into thursday morning. Out ahead of it the spotty showers this afternoon. Tonight we settle down and here come the showers and storms for tomorrow afternoon. By 5 00, 6 00 p. M. Approaching from the northwest. Thats why weve got the yellow alert. It may hold off till after the rush hour if were lucky but im going to play it safe and raise the yellow alert just in case it gets here by the ride home. 88 today. Hot, humid. Isolated afternoon storm. 73 tonight. Tomorrow we bump up to 94. Yellow alert day. Scattered afternoon, evening thunderstorms. Then early showers thursday with the front turning much nicer behind that front thursday afternoon. And then friday mid80s. Looks great. A little hotter with some storms returning over the weekend.
