Don champion is live in dallas, don . Reporter good afternoon. The usually bustling streets of Downtown Dallas have been replaced with crime scene tape and grief this midday. Behind me is one of the many scenes investigators are combing over in this shooting that the police chief here called an atrocity. [ sirens ] at least one gunman ambushed Police Officers just after a peaceful protest was ending in Downtown Dallas. [ sound of gunfire ] the attack sent the crowd running for their lives. I was screaming run, run, run, active shooter, active shooter. Reporter 12 officers were hit and fellow rushed officers to their side. Five of the officers died. Were hurting. Our profession is hurting. Reporter two civilians were also injured. Identified as Micah Johnson and negotiated with him for hours. Johnson told police he was acting alone. He was upset about black lives matter. The suspect stated he wanted to kill white people especially white officers. Reporter the negotiations broke down with johnson and police got into a gunfight. Officers then used a bomb attached to a robot to kill him. Police have three other people in custody. Much of the downtown area is a crime scene. A ten block area will remain closed today as police investigate. In poland overnight, president obama called the shooting despicable. Theres no possible justification for these kinds of attacks. Or any violence against Law Enforcement. Reporter the protest was one of several held across the country last night in the wake of two officerinvolved shootings of black men in louisiana and minnesota. Videos of both shootings went viral. The Police Ambush the deadliest day in Law Enforcement history since the 9 11 attacks. This must stop. This divisiveness between our police and our citizens. Reporter the citys police chief is asking for the nations support. And this community is already coming together in the wake of this horrible tragedy. And about an hour, people will be gathering at a park not too far away from here for an Interfaith Prayer Service as the police chief here put it this morning, we have to start healing wounds and not creating them. In dallas, im don champion, now back to you. Don thank you very much. And as you heard don say, the police the mayor in dallas asked for all americans to join them in a moment of prayer. Theyre holding a Prayer Service there at noon at thanksgiving square. This tragedy in dallas is weighing heavy on Police Departments across the country including right here in d. C. Where the proo planned theres more of them here this weekend. Absolutely, Nikki Burdine is watching that the tragic events again are causing this Police Department to take action to protect its officers at the demonstrations, nikki what are they doing . Reporter chief lanier woke up the morning and she was first shocked then heart broken but also worried about her officers. She knows they still have to be on the streets and they still have a lot of work to do. So theyre taking extra precautions to keep them safe. We doubled up last night on midnights and stay that way until further notice. Reporter chief lanier ordered all officers be on two man crews and extra security is in place at all facilities. But its hard not to be shaken up as a Police Officer when you watch the coverage of what happened last night. Reporter when five fellow officers were killed, the Deadliest Police event since 9 11 but theyve always got a job to do. I also think our officers realize this is the act of you know violent offenders and not the act last night during a peaceful protest at the white house. Deandre moore with the black lives Matter Movement led that march and hes hopeful future protests in the city will be peaceful also. Theres no reason for us to go out and just kill Innocent Police that we dont even know. This could be the good guys and i dont agree with what happened in dallas last night. Reporter the chief is confident in his officers and her comment. We go community. We go out there and we do our jobs and we watch each others back and we engage with each other in the community and believe it or not they watch our back as well. Reporter now i talked to several d. C. Police officers and they told me offcamera that they do feel more vulnerable after what happened in dallas. They say this is just one more thing for them to worry about in the back of their minds. And it makes it more difficult for them to do their jobs. Now the tragic events in dallas weigh heavily of course on Police Officers but also on the minds of ordinary people. Some filled with mixed emotions for more on that lets go to mikea turner ive spoken with a number of people here in southwest d. C. A lot of mixed emotions about this. Pain, anger, frustration. Even disappointment. One man calling the deaths of two black men earlier this week a onetwo punch thats what he said it felt like. But he says the violence in response to both incidents is not the answer. We have to act in a way thats going to make a difference. We have to be peaceful. Reporter like so many others Terry Franklin is discurbed about the disturbed about the deaths of alton sterling in louisiana and Philando Castile in minnesota and now several Police Officers in texas. Any heart was my heart was very heavy. Just its not the terrible. Reporter the heatings were shared by others close by in the district. I just said that its got crazy now. I cant believe this is still going on. And weve got such a long way to go with race relations. Its really hard to take. Its been a tough week to kind of cope with everything. I but there needs to be some talking points. So that both sides of the story can be told. Reporter on tuesday, alton sterling was shot by a Police Officer outside after of a Convenience Store in baton rouge, louisiana. Someone accused him of threating them with a gun and called police. Sterling was later pinned tot ground and shot multiple times all caught on camera. On wednesday, Philando Castile was the victim of another policeinvolved shooting. Castille was shot during a traffic stop in minnesota. His girlfriend who live streamed aftermath says he was reaching for his id and this after he told police about his licensed gun. Castille died at the hospital. I really couldnt believe it. Everybodys just got to take a deep breath and calm down. And think before they act. Reporter now people here arent just talking about the problems. But pondering some solutions. One that includes more dialogue between the community and police. Reporting live from southwest, mikea turner, wusa9. And recapping todays top story that shooting in dallas that killed five Police Officers. Now weve opened a civil rights investigation in louisiana and we are local authorities in minnesota who are leading the investigation there. And today, we are feeling the devastating loss of dallas area Rapid Transit officer Brent Thompson and four other fallen officers whose names remain unreleased as we await notification to all of the families. Now after the events of this week, americans across our country are feeling a sense of helplessness of uncertainty and a fear. Now these feelings are understandable and they are justed. But the answer justified. But the answer must not be violence. The answer is never violence. Rather, the answer, our answer, all our answers, must be action. Calm, peaceful, collaborative and determined action. We must continue working to build trust between communities and Law Enforcement. We must continue working to guarantee every person in this country equal justice under the law. And the ease with which wrong doers can get their hands on Deadly Weapons and the frequency which they use them and we must refract on the kind of reflect on the kind of country we want to build and the kind of society that we are choosing to pass on to our children. And above all, we must reject the easy impulses of bitterness and rancor and embrace the difficult work but the important work of vital work, of finding a path forward together. And above everything; we must remind ourselves that were all americans. And that as americans, we shared not just a common land but a common life. Not just common goals, but a common heart and soul. And those weve lost this week have come from different backgrounds and different neighborhoods but today theyre mourned by officers, by residents, by family and friends, by men and women and children who loved them. Who ed miss them always. They are mourned by all of us. To the families of all who have lost their lives in this series of tragedies, we share your pain and your loss. To our brothers and sisters who wear the badge, i want you to know that i am deeply grateful for the difficult and dangerous work that you do every day to keep our streets safe and our nation secure. To those who seek to improve our country through peaceful protests and protected speech, i want you to know that your voice is important. Do not be discouraged by those who would use your lawful actions as a cover for their heinous violence. We will continue to safeguard your Constitutional Rights and work with you in the Difficult Mission of building a better nation and a brighter future. And to you, i implore you, do not let this week precipitate a new normal in this country. I ask you to turn to each other not against each other. As we move forward. Lets support one another. Let us help heal one another. And i urge you to remember, today and every day, that we are one nation. We are one people and we stand together. May god bless the families and the loved ones of all who were taken from us this week. And confident their grief comfort their grief with his everlasting grace and may god bless the United States of america. Thank you. That was attorney general Loretta Lynch saying that assistance is on the way for the people in dallas and they want to help they will a community. A week of profound grief and heartbreak and leading the investigation into the death of alton sterling and assisting minnesota in the de in that situation. So right now, we want to take another look at what your saying you are saying about this on social media. Lets go to nick whos been looking at that. Reporter yeah, andrea mike ill tell you you know we listened in live a couple of hours ago within president obama called last nights ambush a vicious calculated and despicable attack on Dallas Police. Well, now the two presumptive president ial nominees are weighing in on this. Both on twitter as we queue up the tag board. Donald trump for one of course actually canceled a Campaign Stop in miami because of this, he said as for hillary clinton, the democratic president ial nominee tweeting i mourn for the officers shot while doing their sacred duty to protect peaceful protestors for their families and all who serve with them. Also seeing images posted from dallas Police Department this morning. This one really stuck out. You can see flowers resting on headquarters and the department tweeted thank you to the members of our community for your show of support during this difficult time. And it is support exactly what Dallas Police chief david brown had to say and was asking for this morning. When he said in a press conference, we dont feel much support most days. Talking about police in general. He asked lets not make today most days. Mike, andrea . A lot of people ralliesing around them nick. A dallas man incorrectly identified in the beginning of this investigation as a suspect in the Police Shooting is speaking out now his name mark hughes. He received Death Threats after Police Tweeted out a picture mistakenly asking for help in finding him. He talked about his ordeal with a local Dallas Television reporter. I just got out of the Interrogation Room for about 30 minutes. What Police Officers lying, saying they had video of me shooting. Shooting a gun. Which is a lie. Saying that they have witnesses saying that i shot a gun which is a lie. Day, its the system the system was trying to get me. Now hughes says he has still not received an apology from the police for misidentifying him in this. Theyre obviously pretty busy and probably do that. Absolutely. There is not the first time the dallas Police Department has come under attack. You may remember just over a year ago when a man shot multiple round at Dallas Police headquarters and slammed into a squad car. Deputy usas ellen bryan was a reporter in dallas at the time and ellen . Reporter especially with the scout come from last flights ambush. A big difference between the two. In the attack last june, and last year, there was just one suspect and they knew that early on. Who went after dallas Law Enforcement attacking them at their headquarters downtown. [ sound of gunfire ] cell phone video captured the gun battle between a suspect, and officers outside of the Dallas Police headquarters in june of 2015 on e rammed his armored van into a Police Cruiser and fired more shots. Hes going to hit that cop car. Oh my god. Reporter Police Officers found several pipe bombs scattered around the headquarters. In 911 call, police say the shooter identified himself as james bowl ware. He ranted in the call about losing the custody of his son and said he had been accused of being a terrorist and he was going to blow Law Enforcement up. Police cornered him in the parking lot of a Fast Food Restaurant in the dallas suburb where a sniper killed him. Concerned for their safety and possible explosives, police sent in a robot to clear the scene. Which is when a fire broke out inside the van. The police chief brown said they barely survived the suspects attempt thankful that no one husband injured was injured. Now police spent the next few months cleaning up the busted windows trying to reinforce them and talked about making security stronger around their headquarters. Today its amazing and heart breaking also to go back the hair raised on the back of his neck last year just thinking about what could have happened and how they had literally dodged bullets that day especially though when we compare it to the devastation that we saw overnight. Ellen bryan, wusa9. Okay, the weekend is just act here and about here and fortunately some relief eventually. Definitely feel a lot nicer outside. Not only the heat but also the humidity levels will finally be dropping. But before they do, its hot and humid again once again today.
