Upstate New York ice fishing: Anglers share photos of their eye-opening catches

Kelsey Alvarez, of Hudson, N.Y., holds up a northern pike she landed through the ice on one of the Fulton Chain Lakes recently in the Adirondacks. She said she used a live caught smelt as bait, set halfway up from the bottom.

This winter’s ice fishing season is underway in many parts of Upstate New York – particularly in the North Country and in the higher altitude and shallower waterways in other parts of the state.
Some impressive catches have already been reported. And once temperatures drop and safe ice forms in more areas, more are expected.
