Why is Cat's Command Station such an important innovation?

Cat offered a sneak peak of its new Command Station at its technology display on the outskirts of its Operators Challenge stadium at ConExpo last year. There, operators seated in a station used one set of controls to switch between remotely controlling a wheel loader, excavator and dozer located at three Cat proving grounds in Clayton, North Carolina; Peoria, Illinois; and Tinaja Hills, Arizona.

Remote control is an important step in what Cat calls the “road to autonomy.” Before your mind goes to the typical shoulder-harness remote-control console, think bigger.  
Enter the new Cat Command Station, which looks more like a virtual reality training station. But the machines the operators are controlling in the station are quite real.
