Why SA isn’t making its own vaccines
From 1935 to 2001, SA produced its own vaccines. But since then, we’ve fallen far behind our peers, which leaves us at the back of the queue for Covid jabs. Why did this happen, and can it be fixed?

SA is one of only a handful of African countries — the others are Egypt, Ethiopia, Morocco, Senegal and Tunisia — with at least some capability to make vaccines. And yet our country is producing next to none.
