Cecily is back with a closer look to at that hot and sticky accuweather forecast when action news at 5 00 continues in just a moment cuba and United States have fully restored diplomatic relations for the first time in more than 50 years. Cubas foreign minister raised the countrys flag at its embassy in washington, d. C. This morning. There was much less pomp and circumstance at the u. S. Embassy in havana. Well explain why american diplomats in cuba are waiting to hoist the stars and stripes coming up on action news at 5 30. Major interstate in Southern California shut down after heavy rains caused a bridge to collapse. Happened over the weekend about 180 miles east of los angeles. A 30 by 50foot section of a bridge on i10 gave way bringing a pickup truck along with it. Crews had to cut the pickup truck driver out of the vehicle. He was hurt but expected to be unclear. Officials say its unclear when the interstate will reopen. In health check tonight some tiny devices that do some pretty big jobs have come to the area and staffers at one hospital got a closer look at them today. Amazing story. Health reporter and registered nurse ali gorman is the big board to fill us in. Hi, guys. Thanks to micro chips the size of medical devices is shrinking. Thats making them easier for doctors to use and less traumatic for patients. And today we got a look at how new technology can help patients with heart disease. Doctors and nurses at Lankenau Hospital got hands on experience with the worlds smallest heart pump. Theyre thinner than pencils and can be threaded into the heart through a blood vessel. That eliminates the need for open heart surgery. Prior to that swelled to do a sternotomy, open the patients chest up and use a implantable which was big bulky and traumatic experience. The motor itself is smaller than a pencil eraser. It boosts the speed and power of flood flow pumping out 3 liters of blood a minute. This helps hearts that are too weak to do it on their own. The pumps are not for long term use but they can stabilize in emergencies by giving hearts more time to rest and to heal. Now in philadelphia, theyre going into use at lankenau and at einstein. Also today another advance in technology. The use of drones is expanding into healthcare. The government approved some test flights and over the weekend a drone delivered medicine to a pop up up Health Clinic in rural virginia. It was the first clinic to receive medical supplies from a drone. Hundreds of people came out to watch. Now, a manned helicopter carried the package most of the way. Then the drone took over. The clinic saw about 3,000 people and the director says at least 30 people were directly helped by that drone delivery. Wow. Thanks ali. Much more still to come on action news at 5 00 tonight. Another reason more people stay with state farm. Get to a better state. Time for accuweather. At the action news big board meteorologist cecily tynan standing by with a look at the shore. Who do you see out there today. I see monica malpass. I thought that was monica there on the beach. Right there. Called in sick today right. And im holding down the fort. Here we are live on sky6 in cape may. I dont think its monica. A lot of people heading in for dinnertime. If you look closely at the umbrellas the winds really kicking up. If youre on the beach its still hot but you get closer to the water the ocean temperature is 72. You get that little bit of a sea breeze that can help and you get in the ocean and that really is refreshing. Temperaturewise though its another hot day. Seconds day in the row of temps in the 90s. Philadelphia 94 degrees. Wilmington and trenton 91. Millville 92. Even Sea Isle City reporting a temperature of 90 and dewpoints generally in the upper 60s and even in the 70s and that means the heat index is getting very close to that dangerous level especially south and east of philadelphia. Philadelphia 98 degrees. We did lit 100 earlier today with a heat index. Millville, though, it feels like 101 dover 100 and Sea Isle City it feels like 102 degrees right now. So that dewpoint around 70 degrees for most of our viewing area makes it oppressive. The good news is dewpoints will be dropping. Tomorrow will be another hot day, temperatures in the 90s again. Likely making this an official heat wave. But the dewpoint tomorrow 65 degrees. Thats somewhat humid but not like today. But look at wednesday thursday friday and saturday. Dewpoints only in the 50s. Thats very low humidity, a comfortable air mass is moving in and its going to be sticking around for awhile. Storm tracker6 live double scan showing that we just have one little blowup of some downpours near llewes delaware beginning to move off the coast. Thats with the first of two cold fronts moving through. Satellite6 along with action radar shopping the seconds one still across the midwest really doesnt have a lot of activity with it. It will swing through tomorrow night and that will bring us the possibility of a few hit or miss thunderstorms. I think theyll be more miss than hit. And that will really Cool Temperatures off by wednesday. Tonight, though, is going to be a warm and muggy night with a stray thunderstorm possible. Most areas rain free. 78 degrees the low in philadelphia. 73 in millville. 68 in allentown and 75 in wilmington. But future tracker heat index slowing 11 oclock when im on tonight, its going to feel like 87 degrees in philadelphia. But as we head to lunchtime tomorrow, the temperature and the heat index about equal 93 degrees so it will be hot tomorrow but it wont be quite as oppressive as today. So the five day at 5 00 showing tomorrow another hot day but less humid 93 degrees. Officially making this the second heat wave of the summer. Tomorrow night a few spotty thunderstorms moving through. Behind that system wednesday beautiful 85 degrees, low humidity. Really a repeat performance on thursday 85. Friday 86 and saturday 86 degrees. Again low humidity but things will change a little bit by the second half of the weekend. Adam will talk about that in the accuweather 7day forecast. One more day of this and then things improve. Alicia and i are going to open a Lemonade Stand on city avenue. Thats a good idea. Ill buy some. Well explain how it happened. But first we are continuing to track day two of this oppressive heat with temperatures in the 90s and higher humidity. People are doing whatever they can to stay cool. Our sky6 hd camera pointed right at the beach on cape may right now where as you can see, people are still taking advantage of that cool ocean water and the breeze and excessive heat warning remains until 8 oclock tonight and then we start to see a few changes. Meteorologist adam joseph is live at the action news big board with all the details for us and adam being at that beach this evening, pretty good idea. Yeah, especially with that sea breeze kicking in dropping the temperatures right at the immediate shore into the 80s but it is still oppressively humid down there even at the shore despite the winds are off the water. Heat warnings in effect until 8 oclock tonight for the heart of the Delaware Valley and then around that area a heat advisory also in effect until 8 oclock tonight while the heat index remains close to 100 degrees in a few locations. But it has been a summer scorcher the last 48 hours. Yesterdays temperature in philadelphia 95 with a peak heat index of 105. Today so far 94 degrees with a peak heat index of 100 so a little better than yesterday and tomorrow will get a little better and then that big change comes in on wednesday. Right now your current heat index 98 philadelphia, 101 in millville, 100 in dover and lower 90s to the north and west. The poconos pretty nice at 84 degrees. Your evening planner 90 degrees at 7 oclock. There could be a stray shower in one or two locations but most of us just very warm and muggy with temps by 10 00 at 84 degrees. According to a report embiid actually rebroke the bone in his foot that cost him all of last year. He will have surgery shortly. A little better tomorrow. I really want to run. As we take a look at double scan live radar we do have a decent amount of sunshine. There was one scattered downpour an hour in parts of salem county but nothing out there to cool you off. In fact, as we take a look at the action cam it was down in parts of olde city on independence mall. Looks like a Beautiful Day from this Vantage Point but when you step out the door you immediately break that sweat. As we look at the temperatures, we do have a sea breeze, at least at the shore communities. 84 right now in Sea Isle City, 85 in beach haven with that southerly wind off the ocean of 72. Dover at 88 degrees and then were in the 90s right along i95 including millville and uner 80s to the north and west. Yesterday we had heat indices acrosstheboard well over 100 degrees. Today from i95 north and west it was mainly in the mid and upper 90s for your heat index. Southern areas a little hotter because of that very humid air coming in off of the ocean feeling like 101 right now in millville. However, those dewpoints which really drive up that uncomfortable feeling, when its in the 70s, thats oppressive. Thats where we were yesterday and for most of today. Tomorrow drops down to 65. So its humid but its not oppressive. Its better. And then take a look at wednesday through the beginning of the weekend. We are in the pleasant range. A really nice stretch in fact probably the nicest stretch of at least four or five days there weve seen so far this Summer Season on its way. We have a cold front just to our west. That first front will drop the humidity some tomorrow. Theres a second front near chicago. Notice not a lot of action with this so were not looking at any sort of widespread Severe Weather tomorrow as a cold front passes through. It will be scattered and the same thing for tonight a stray thunderstorm is possible but most of us dry warm and muggy. 70 to 78 degrees. But as this front slides through tomorrow, its n remains hot, a little less humid. Scattered storm possible and then this High Pressure comes in and becomes a muscle maker for the rest of the week. It brings a beautiful change and seasonable with highs at 85. Down the shore tomorrow, sun and clouds, 86 surf city, Atlantic City 87. There could be an evening thunderstorm as the front passes through. Same thing for southern tip of cape may at 86 and rehoboth and Bethany Beach upper 80s and again that stray evening thunderstorm with the ocean temperature of 78 degrees. The exclusive accuweather 7day forecast, sun and clouds tomorrow, hot but less humid at 93 degrees. Again afew popups in the afternoon and then wednesday through saturday, sun mainly dominating the forecast and the sky, just a few clouds each day. Highs a little below average in the mid 80s with low humidity. And then on sunday, sun and clouds mixing. There will be little uptick in the humidity sunday, could be some late day thunderstorms developing but the best chance right now could hold off until monday of 86 degrees. So, 24 more hours and then we get that break. Then we run then we go running. Im counting on it. Okay. I didnt see how far.
