And first up, we begin with that breaking news and one of the string of shootings we have been following today in the district. The mother of a 12yearold. She was caught in the cross fire. She has now died and police say she is the 97th murder victim in the district this year. Todays violence began around noon. Someone drove up to Saint Luke Catholic Church on east capital street, shot and killed 21yearold Amare Jenkins and then got back into a minivan and took off. And just before 4 00, an argument between teenagers led to gunshots on Savannah Street southeast, where a 12yearold and his mother were shot. A teenager arrested for her murder. And late this afternoon, a body found near 17th and evartz, homicide detectives at the scene now. Neighbors reported hearing gunshots around this time last night. Jackie bensen is live with what police tell us these recent shootings have in common. Jackie . Reporter well, jim, to give you a feeling for what is going on right now in this city, while we were at that scene on Savannah Street this afternoon, the shooting, i was told police found a body here at 17th and evartz in northeast d. C. , and were told tonight this too is a homicide. One thing they all have in common the violence and homicides, it is illegal firearms in homes and in the hands of the wrong people. And when children have access to firearms, bad things happen. Reporter d. C. Homicide detectives went from shooting scene to shooting scene. Chief lanier says her officers recovered 122 guns in the last 30 days, none of them legally owned. We call them crime guns. These are guns that a lot of them are stolen. A lot of them have serial numbers obliterated. A lot of them have highcapacity magazines, as we have discussed before. And theyre, you know, finding their way into the major cities across the United States. Reporter d. C. Mayor Muriel Bowser made a plea for people to report illegal guns through a new rewards effort. She later posted this tweet. We offer a 1,000 reward for people who provide a tip related to illegal firearms. Reporter ward 8 council member, la ruby may says her constituents are fed up with gun violence. I live two blocks over. This is my neighborhood. Weve had too many loss of lives in this community and in the ward. Reporter and both chief lanier and mayor bowser stress that this program is anonymous. People can text in, and there is no way to contact them back, but is there a 1,000 reward for information that leads to police being able to take some of these illegal guns off the street. The sandwich chain tweeted, we no longer have a relationship with jared, and have no further comment. It comes in response to new questions about a child pornography investigation. Subway suspended relations with fogel last month when federal agents searched his home in indiana and seized several computers and dvds. The head of his charity was arrested in april and Russell Taylor is charged with producing child porn. Fogel pitched the socalled subway diet and has never been charged with a crime. And tomorrow a former Fairfax CountyPolice Officer will be going to court to face murder charges. A grand jury indicted adam torres yesterday, two years after john gear was shot and killed. Gear was not armed. Today we learned that county attorneys may have slowed down the process. They originally advised the Police Department to withhold certain pieces of information about torres. John gears father says the wait has been frustrating. As far as my own peace of mind on the whole thing, i feel that its things have worked out the way i liked. A Prince Georges CountyPolice Officer is off the force tonight accused of assault and child abuse. Corporal steven moore was arrested last night in prince frederick. Sheriffs deputies say he assaulted his son and exwife during an argument. Prince georges police have suspended him. Moore is a nineyear veteran of the force and worked in administration. Prince William County police tell us they got a call sunday night with a seemingly no one on the other end of the line. When officers went to check out the home on royal court in woodbridge, they found the front door open and a 1yearold little girl alone inside, unharmed. Short time later, a relative, ortiz, was arrested. She is charged with child neglect. Police tell us they arent sure how that little girl dialed 911. Right now, 200 active duty military troops are preparing to help join the fight against wildfires in the west. Its the first time that has happened in nearly a decade. Tonight, 3,000 are being kept out of their homes in a Washington State resort town that has already lost 75 homes and businesses because of these fires. So far this year, an area the size of vermont has been scorched and is getting so bad in california that 4,000 inmates are being paid to help fight these fires. Now danny with winds of 50 miles per hour. It is expected to continue to strengthen and could become forecasted to become a category 2 hurricane within five days making its way toward the west, the Lesser Antilles here. When would it affect the United States if it was to do so . Well, it wouldnt be for close to ten days. So weve got a long way to watch this, but this is something we will watch again. It is expected to strengthen over the next couple of days and ill watch it for you. Only the fourthnamed storm this season, a very slow season thus far. As expected.
