It might be an Ivy League School but does that really guarantee your child will have an advantage whether it comes to getting a job . 9news reporter mike hydeck got some advice from a College Planning expert Paul Hempfield a few days ago. The more expensive the college you go to, the more your degree is worth s. That true or not . Our guest today is going to help dispel some myths about college, planning for it and paying for t. His name is Paul Hempfield, an author of a series of books on how to do that. First and foremost, if i go to an Ivy League School, chances are ill get a high paying career s. That automatic . No. In fact one of my clients who happens to interview candidates from an Ivy League School up in new england told me one time dont send your students to an Ivy League School because you can get a better education somewhere else. Theyre cutting back on expenses like crazy. Theyre hiring parttime professors. Theyre hiring teaching professionals who use english as a second language. The industry is saying these students were born into a bubble of privilege and coming out of these schools with the attitude that theyre entitled. And theyre sending a signal back to these students, youre not entitled. You have to get in line like everybody else. Is there a better way to save than others when it comes to college . Well, one of the things that you can do is you can always start off at a Community College when means you can take on a stafford loan which is available through the government, through the college, and the student signs for t not the parents. The parents will love that. And so what happens is the student can now go to an in state State College and be a commuter and still stay at home and bond with the parents for another four years. Bonding. Thats what they call it, right . And the parents end up not having to pay anything for a fouryear degree as long as the student keeps going back and forth to college by car every day. What are some of the other pictures you would like to myths that you would like to dispel . That you get well, one of the pictures if you go to a more myths is if you go to a more expensive college, you get a better education. Your student comes into my classroom. Georgetown is going to charge 6,000 for that course so that your daughter can sit there and text her friends. An hour from now i will have to run over to the university of Maryland College park where i will teach the same courses, same notes, being the same note and the parents are going to be charged 950 for the same course. You dont get what you pay for is the point. As long as there are parents out there thinking, thats a great thing to believe in, the more you pay, the better the education, places like georgetown and the ivy leagues will continue to survive and thrive.
