Those embers can be carried for miles. The thomas fire is one of six major fires. The latest in san diego spread quickly. Rich macklin is with the Ventura County fire department. Anyone anytime we have erratic winds like this, were never out of danger. Were not letting our guard down. Firefighters are still down the street here working on structure protection. Glor the challenge for firefighters is getting a handle on the steep, dry terrain, acting as fuel. What you see behind me right now are starting fires. The wind is calm right now. The concern is that if and when that wind picks back up, these smaller fires become f devastated. And every friend we talk to is in the same boat. Glor kat merrick and Chris Corsones have already suffered. They returned to their neighborhood to find their home gone. The photos and the mementos and, you know, the fam heirlooms, theyre gone and theyre not coming back. Glor yesterday drivers in Santa Barbara county drove past the fires along the 101. The spence heat didnt stop this man from pulling over to rescue an animal along the side of the road. The skirball fire threatened multimilliondollar homes in bel air. In Los Angeles County 250,000 people have been evacuated. Judy hofmann sanders family had owned this home since 1963. The flames were hoe high . Oh, 12 feet. All the trees were on fire. And the firemen, they said, sorry, we tried to save it. And i said, we appreciate it. Glor that is judy hoffmans house t as you can see this is not an uncommon sight. The only thing left standing after this home was destroyed is the chimney behind us. We do have more now on the biggest of the fires, and that is that thomas fire thats burned 96,000 acres in Ventura County. It is only 5 contained. David begnaud is there as well. Local time here in Ventura County, right off the 101 freeway, this brush went up in flames, and we started to see some of the wind gusts that were originally predicted. By early afternoon, firefighters were attacking every fire that exploded along this oceanside highway, trying to stop the flames before reaching beachfront homes. Were standing in the southbound lanes, but true to form when you live in southern california, people are used to this so they dont close downtown freeway. They just reduce it to one lane as flames more than 100 feet tall rage right now as the wind gusts. Most residents evacuated, but a few stayed behind and tried to the surrounding mountains were thick with smoke.
