Transportation reporter pete muntean talks about the trains speed. Weve got a reporter on scene, too. But first lets set the scene for you. It is a jumbled mess. There were 14 cars on this train. Most of them jumped the tracks. There were about 80 passengers on board and a crew of five when the train rounded a curb over interstate 5 and derailed. Listen to the conversation between the trains conductor and dispatchers. Amtrak 501, emergency. We are on the ground. Hey, guys, what happened . We were coming around the corner to take the bridge over i5 there right north of nisqually and we went on the ground. Is everybody okay . Im st weve got cars everywhere and down onto the highway. The drivers whose cars were hit by the falling train were injured. None of them, though, are among the dead tonight. That crash scene you saw will be closed off to anyone but work crews and investigators for at least another day. Reporter ted land from our sister station in seattle is there. Reporter ntsb investigators are arriving at the crash scene this evening to try to figure out how this happened. Was speed a factor . Was something on the train tracks that caused this train to topple over onto the roadway injuring dozens and killing at least three people. At this hour theyve started to bring in more heavy equipment. Theres a huge crane now set up which has the job of meticulously moving that train out of the way, moving some of the cars off of the bridge. You can see them still hanging down there onto the roadway. Some bulldozers are also moving closer to the scene to try to help with that throughout all of this. Officials tell us that theyve been able to check each of the railcars for survivors or additional casualties and we know of about 100 people who have been taken to area hospitals with varying degrees of injuries, everything from bumps and bruises to some patients requiring level 1 trauma care. In dupont, washington, im ted land, wusa9. We heard ted mention whether or not speed was a factor in this crash. Well, there are a lot of questions online about that tonight, specifically about the stretch of track where the train went off the rails. Transportation reporter pete muntean with that part of the story. Train 501 was traveling south toward portland. You can see the curving overpass. Before the spot the speed limit is 79 Miles Per Hour, but a Washington State transportation chart calls for a slower speed here, only 30 Miles Per Hour along this curve. Data from amtraks train tracker app shows going 81, only a 1 4 mile before this bridge. This is billed as high speed rail, but its really more of a bypass. A 150 million upgrade to train tracks usually used for freight 15 miles long designed to keep trains from this winding old northerly route that had tunnels where only one train could pass at a time. This was meant to shave 10 minutes off the trip from seattle to portland. Its not exactly clear how this train derailed. The ntsb is on the scene. The final cause determination could take months.
