The Fiji Times » FICAC hits out at Society

Vishaal Kumar Picture: FILE. The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption has hit out at the Fiji Law Society’s comments that “corruption is not so complex – or so widespread” in a statement on the proposed establishment of an anti-corruption division of the judiciary. FICAC said the statement was  misconceived and delusional and requested the FLS  refrain from undermining the real and serious issues of corruption, and avoid being a hindrance to any genuine effort put forth by the Government ‘to tackle this serious and complex matter’. FICAC added the statement neglected  the ground reality of the seriousness of corruption that the country was fighting.

Feb 10, 2021 06:19:10 PM We were in a stage of shock when the anti-corruption division and abolition of assessors bills were tabled in parliament on Monday, says Social Democratic Liberal Party leader Viliame Gavoka. His comments come after Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said the bill will be debated in parliament tomorrow as they weren t objected by the opposition on Monday. Sayed-Khaiyum during a press conference said it seems like Fiji Law Society was a mouthpiece for the opposition. Gavoka said Sayed-Khaiyum has used the Standing Order 51 numerous time to fast track bills without having a consultation with members of the public. He said the members of the opposition have been immune to the abuse of the system by the government.
