ATLANTA Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms will face what she calls “robust” opposition in her re-election race this year. City Council President Felicia Moore announced her candidacy on Thursday, citing government ethics and the city’s uptick in violent crime.

ATLANTA An Atlanta media mogul is pausing to remember a Hollywood legend who he described as the grandmother he never had.
On Thursday, Tyler Perry shared a touching tribute to the late Cicely Tyson, following the news of her death. The Emmy and Tony-winning legend was 96 years old.
In his post on Instagram, Perry recounted how he got the overwhelming feeling to watch The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman while he worked. It s the 1974 television drama for which Tyson won two Emmys for her portrayal of the 110-year-old former slave.

Ahead of Martin Luther King Jr Day 2021, the City of Atlanta has unveiled the new statue of the civil rights activist, created by Jamaican-born artist Basil Watson.
The 12-foot-tall bronze sculpture, titled ‘Hope Moving Forward’, was unveiled on January 14 during a small ceremony attended by Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, and other city officials.
The statue stands at the intersection of Northside Drive and Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive across from Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
Basil Watson, the renowned Jamaican sculptor who created the statue, said it was a “dream come true” when he was chosen by the City of Atlanta to create a larger-than-life statue.
The Atlanta City Council approved a plan to spend $50 million on affordable-housing development and preservation projects earlier this month, according to a report in The Atlanta Voice. The council approved Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms’s executive order to issue $50 million in housing bonds as part of the mayor’s campaign pledge to spend $1 billion on affordable-housing efforts. Early in her administration, as Next City reported, Bottoms released a housing plan calling for 20,000 new and preserved homes that are affordable to people at a variety of income levels, along with efforts to stem displacement.
“The passage of this legislation is a significant step in fulfilling our $1 billion commitment to the creation and preservation of affordable housing for all who call or wish to call Atlanta home,” Bottoms said, according to The Atlanta Voice.
