May 6 (UPI) The Atlanta police officer charged with murder over the shooting death of a Black man last summer has been reinstated to the force though he will remain on administrative leave.
The Atlanta Civil Service Board ruled Wednesday to reinstate Garrett Rolfe, stating in findings of fact and order document that he was fired without due process.

The Atlanta police officer, who was fired after he shot and killed Rayshard Brooks in a Wendy’s parking lot on June 12, 2020, has been reinstated, the media has learned.
The Atlanta Civil Service Board ruled that former Officer Garrett Rolfe was wrongly terminated. “Due to the City’s failure to comply with several provisions of the Code and the information received during witnesses’ testimony, the Board concludes the Appellant was not afforded his right to due process. Therefore, the Board GRANTS the Appeal of Garrett Rolfe and revokes his dismissal as an employee of the APD,” the organization said in a statement, according to CNN.

Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms has defended her decision to dismiss a police officer following the death of Rayshard Brooks, with some questioning if the decision was made simply to quell protests and riots that erupted in the aftermath.
Bottoms said Wednesday that she stood by the decision to terminate Officer Garrett Rolfe, insisting it was the right thing to do. Had immediate action not been taken, I firmly believe the public safety crisis we experienced during that time would have been significantly worse, Bottoms said in response to the Civil Service Board (CSB) decision.

ATLANTA Atlanta’s rising crime rate is getting some predictable attention from politicians – but their ability to actually combat it may be limited, according to one politician who is exiting after twenty years.
The city’s homicide and aggravated assault rates rose sharply in 2020 – with data indicating this year could be as bad or worse.
In March, Georgia House Speaker Rep. David Ralston (R-Blue Ridge) announced in a letter to Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms that the House public safety committee will hold hearings on Atlanta’s crime spike “out of concern for the safety of Atlanta’s residents and visitors.”
