1.6 million people in the Commonwealth report they are struggling to get enough to eat during the pandemic, according to a new survey by the Greater Boston Food Bank. That s an increase of 55% from 2019 to 2020, with people of color and families with children are being disproportionately impacted.
The survey also shows that people are reticent to get help, even where it s available. Only one in three adults experiencing food insecurity are using food pantries, and only one out of two adults experiencing food insecurity are enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.
We speak to Catherine D Amato, CEO of the Greater Boston Food Bank, about the prevalence of food insecurity during the pandemic and the gaps in access.

ROCHESTER Now that the Council on Aging has reopened, the senior center is resuming its typical event programming.
The Monthly Bereavement Group with Reverend Larry from Continuum Hospice will be held on Tuesday, May 11 at 11 a.m. Reservations are not required.
On Wednesday, May 12, 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. residents can pick up food from the Greater Boston Food Bank.
Food pick-up must be made in person, unless prior arrangements have been made. Call the Rochester Senior Center to apply for this service.
The Rochester COA Board Meeting will be held at Town Hall on Wednesday, May 12 at 9 a.m. This meeting can also be accessed via webinar.
