A blood compact, the kasi-kasi, was done in Limasawa, OPAV narrates | Philippine Information Agency

LIMASAWA, Southern Leyte, April 15 (PIA)   This historical island is poised to add another first aside from being the venue of the first Easter Sunday celebration of the Eucharist, March 31, 500 years ago in the Philippines and in Asia. On March 29, 1521, or two days before the iconic scene of the Easter Sunday Mass, the “Kasi-Kasi” was conducted between the traveler Magellan and Rajah Kolambu, king of Limasawa, and kasi-kasi meant blood compact signifying brotherhood, according to Usec. Anthony Gerard Gonzales of the Office of the Presidential Assistant for the Visayas (OPAV). “Historical accounts are silent on procedure of the custom, but the remarkable feature is that the two leaders both drank wine in mixture of blood drawn from either their arm or chest,” Gonzales said during the unveiling of the Limasawa quincentennial marker in the afternoon of March 31 at the municipal grounds in barangay Cabulihan.

Quincentennial marker in Maasin City represents Leyte Island, explains DOT, OPAV

MAASIN CITY, April 12 (PIA) The historical marker now dominating the scenery of the new bayview park of this city speaks not just about the city alone, but for the whole Leyte island, in the context of the Magellan-Elcano voyage 500 years ago. In a nutshell, this was the main reason why the marker, unveiled Sunday April 4, bore the name Leyte below the embossed copper plate painting, and at the top on the other side, the texts describing the passage of the foreigners from Limasawa to Cebu. “Indeed, what we are marking is the island but Maasin was chosen for the symbolic reason that it is the immediate capital city of the closest historical space being described in the records of the Magellan-Elcano expedition,” Undersecretary Anthony Gerard Gonzales of the Office of the Presidential Assistant for the Visayas (OPAV) declared in his talk.
