How networks of influential individuals helped destroy one of the world s most durable democracies and legitimise a racist, authoritarian state

Davide Cantoni, Felix Hagemeister, Mark Westcott In their thousands, right-wing groups marched towards the Senate House. They marched under many different insignia and banners, including far-right, avowedly racist organisations. Some believed reports spread through right-wing media of a deep state conspiracy, others sought to show strength that would weaken or lead to the fall of the left-wing government, elected to power with a slender majority, which some equated with communism. Still others marched against the Jews. What gave the demonstration a deeper potential for escalation still was the presence of members of well-organised veterans groups. Robot adoption at German plants | VOX, CEPR Policy Portal

Wolfgang Dauth, Sebastian Findeisen, Jens Südekum, Nicole Woessner The robots are coming. According to a widely cited study, about 47% of total US employment is susceptible to computerized automation (Frey and Rahbari 2016, Frey and Osborne 2017). A heated discussion, stimulated by the current wave of automation, concerns the future of work and society. Recent empirical studies highlight ways that the rising importance of robots in industrial production have transformed the labour market and the economy at large. Following seminal work by Graetz and Michaels (2018), a growing literature has exploited industry-level data from the International Federation of Robotics (IFR) to study the consequences of robotisation for local labour markets (Acemoglu and Restrepo 2020), individual workers (Dauth et al. 2020), and occupational structure (de Vries et al. 2020).

Commuting zones in Japan | VOX, CEPR Policy Portal

Alan Manning, Barbara Petrongolo The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic this year has led to a surge in teleworking and caused renewed interest in studying the importance of commuting patterns for geographical labour markets. Geographical labour markets are usually denoted as commuting zones, and many economic phenomena are studied at the commuting zone level. An important aspect of a commuting zones are commuting patterns, which are determined by travel costs and time for workers commuting from remote areas. However, advanced transportation technology and information communication technology (ICT) may decrease the importance of such commuting costs, and the ‘death of distance’ or the ‘persistence of distance’ has been discussed in the literature for years. To examine this, a useful definition of the geographical unit of a labour market is imperative.
