Bay Area Reporter :: SF housing advocates work to address disparities for BIPOC, LGBTQ seniors

Around the country, among allies and foes alike, San Francisco often acts as a byword for progressivism and queer liberation. But the city is also the epicenter of the state s housing crisis, and for many LGBTQ seniors particularly those who are of color or trans who ve dealt with that experience, life in the City by the Bay hasn t always been somewhere over the rainbow. Veronika Fimbres, 68, who is a former San Francisco veterans affairs commissioner and in 2018 was a Green Party candidate for California governor, has lived in the city s Sunnyside neighborhood for a dozen years. Her experience has run the gamut of housing in San Francisco.

Oscars Face Criticism Over Union Station Closures

Chris Pizzello/Pool Via PMC Commuters were vocal about the problems that Union Station detours and restrictions caused, especially for disabled riders: The inferior service given to these folks is a disgrace. While the Oscars put on a glamorous and innovative in-person show at Union Station on Sunday, organizers faced criticism over the weekend for the impact its production restrictions had on those outside of Hollywood. The station remained open to riders before, during and after the ceremony for bus, rail, Metrolink and Amtrak use, but commuters were rerouted to the east entrance as production took over Union Station West, the Ticket Concourse and Grand Waiting Room. Bus stops, ride-share pickups and parking have also been relocated for most of the month, and this weekend saw a web of street closures including Alameda Street, Main Street and Temple Street.

As Oscars are handed out in Union Station, an 80-year-old drama plays overhead

BY DEBORAH VANKIN LOS ANGELES TIMES April 24, 2021 13 A ceiling painting in Union Station s entry vestibule was discovered in 2017 as part of an eight-year restoration. The newly restored station will host the Oscars this Sunday and opens to the public on April 29. (Jason Armond/Los Angeles Times/TNS) Restoration workers at Union Station on Monday, February 22, 2021, in Los Angeles. (Jason Armond/Los Angeles Times/TNS) It was after midnight on a June evening in 2017 when the discovery was made. Union Station’s entry vestibule – an ode to Mission Moderne architecture, with its Spanish tile floor and draping Art Deco chandeliers – was virtually deserted. A restoration cleaning crew was wiping down the tarnished ceiling panels, dim, brownish squares that hadn’t been cleaned in nearly 80 years and were so caked with tobacco tar and dirt that they appeared to be solid wood rather than painted plaster.
