Kankara abduction: Why we appear worried - Ahmed Lawan

Following the abduction of students of the Government Science Secondary School in Kankara, Katsina State, the President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, has said that the National Assembly will continue to engage the Executive arm of government until appropriate action is taken to address the growing insecurity in many parts of the country. He noted that the lawmakers are worried that nothing has been done to save the country from a worsening security problem. Recall that the Senate had recently advised President Muhammadu Buhari to sack the country’s service chiefs without further delay, a call the Presidency ignored. Lawan stated this in his concluding remark on a motion considered during plenary on Tuesday into the recent kidnapping of students.

Masari said those willing to know why Buhari failed to visit the school should ask the president themselves. Recall that Boko Haram had abducted some students from the GSSS last week Friday. Confirming the abduction, leader of Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau, had said the students were kidnapped to discourage western education. Shekau had also said the abduction was to encourage Islam. Following the incident, Buhari was berated by Nigerians for failing to visit the scene of the incident which happened while he was in the state.

The government and the attackers are negotiating the fate of the boys, according to Garba Shehu, a spokesman for Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari.
